This funny nickname came from A2 the 80s British cartoon series where the main character had this red nose like him on the first day at the new school after moving from Portsmouth to Cowplain. A1 As you'd expect from its position and history, the eastern African nation of Somalia is rich in cultural A2 influences. Wrapped part way around Ethiopia, it forms the sea coast of the Horn of Africa. Kenya borders it to the south, and its north coast faces the southern shore of the Arabian peninsula, only a couple of A3 hundred miles away. Unsurprisingly, given this last fact, Somalia was one of the first African countries A4 converted to Islam, in the 8th and 9th centuries. During the 18th and 19th century, the Somali ports were controlled by Arabs and by the Ottoman Empire. During the European colonial period, the north was a B1 British, and the south an Italian, colony. Independent Somalia still shows varying effects of these influences B2 (Arabic, English and Italian are all used for teaching). Musically speaking, Somalia forms part of an eastern African Islamic continuum that includes the coast of Kenya and Tanzania as well as Sudan, and is more B3 loosely linked with North and Muslim West Africa. (Kismayu, in the south of Somalia, is in fact the most B4 northerly frontier of the Swahili music called -taarab- or -tarabu-)

The only cover tune on Carlton Jumel Smith's "1634 Lexington Ave." album is not really a cover at all, since it was first cut by Carlton himself already 10 years ago. The sultry 2009 edition of "I'd Better", that was put out A1 on the short-lived UK Soulchoonz label, is a nice piece of programmed mid-tempo modern soul. The new version, now getting a 7" single treatment on Timmion, still sounds miles away from the polished earlier effort. It starts off with a nice guitar led beat before settling into a sweet Tighten Up groove, a funky road which still has plenty curves to explore, even for Cold Diamond & Mink, who are certainly not lifting water from this particular well for the first time. What remains naturally is Carlton's ultra-soulful vocal performance, and a message of manning up to the max, staying true to your word in front of something divine. It's not B1 that often you hear a more recent version of a song sounding so that you would think it's the old version. Essentially, what you get is a beautiful piece of xover soul, with timeless swagger, and an instrumental with soulful legs of its own

The compilation begins in 1981 with Parade Ground from Belgium, the duo of brothers Pierre and Jean-Marc A4 Pauly with help from Patrick Codenys and Jean-Luc of Front 242. “The Light’s Gone” was one of their A5 earliest experiments and employs a stark minimalism with modular synthesizers, guitar reverb and tape B1 delay. Next we venture to Granada, Spain in 1982 to meet the trio of Diseño Corbusier. Influenced by B2 Cabaret Voltaire and Dadaism, “La Esperanza está en Antenas” was the band’s take on melancholic pop fueled by a robotic DR-55 bass-line. Sailing the Mediterranean Sea to Athens to meet Greek electronic B3 goddess Lena Platonos who shares a demo from 1983. “??a Ga´ta Sas ?e??µe´?e? St? G???´a” translates B4 to “A Cat Is Waiting On The Corner” and is possibly the witchiest sounds we’ve shared yet, ending with a B5 blood curdling scream
