HOW IT’S MADE

ow and When Were T.V.s Invented By: Brandon Ruiz Garcia 4th Grade In the early 1920’s, John Baird, a Scottish engineer and inventor had a whole bunch of stuff that he put on his table including: knitting needles, a bike lamp, a biscuit tin, and a hatbox lid. He was experimenting with producing the first ever television. He put the hatbox lid sideways and cut holes in it, and then set it on its side. Next he put knitting needles through one of the holes for the hatbox to be able to spin. Mr. Baird shined a light sideways, through the holes in the hatbox as it spun on the knitting needles. As the light hit the spinning disc it broke into tiny pieces of light, which reflected an image. This caused an image of the object or person to project onto a wall. Mr. Baird used the wood from a coffin to create the base. It took several years and a lot of trials before the television was finally finished. The first image captured an d projected was a ventriloquist’s doll. After having success with the ventriloquist’s doll, Mr. Baird excitedly called up an office worker named William Taynton to see how a human face might be transmitted.. William sat stiff in the chair. He was reportedly scared about what was going to happen. The first television screen was very small, like the size of a 5X7 picture frame. The first images televised produced five frames per second. Today’s televisions, for comparison, produce twenty-four frames per second, which are refreshed five times every 24th of a second! The first television produced thirty lines of resolution, which gave the picture a more grainy quality. Today’s televisions and movies produce 500 lines of resolution. So, as you are enjoying your holiday shows this winter break, remember to be grateful to John Baird for his invention of the television , in 1925 The Cougar’s Roar

How Bikes Were and Are Made By: Julio Lopez – 4th Grade In France, in 1790, the first bike was made. It was made out of wood, looked like a horse and had no wheels and no peddles. Then in 1861, a German inventor added peddles and wheels. In 1870 bikes were built with one large wheel in the front and a little wheel in the back. In 1903 the first bike race was done. It was the first of the famous race called Tour de France. Now bikes are made in a factory. First the metal is formed into tubes. The tubes are a light weight but strong metal. THE GOLDEN GATE BRIDGE

Golden Gate Bridge By Adiel Lopez – 4th Grade Do you know that in 1937 the Golden Gate Bridge was opened for use? Why is the Golden Gate Bridge so popular? It is popular because it helped people to access the bay to San Francisco, California. The bridge is not Golden at all, it is orange-red to blend in with the hill. It is made out of steel and concrete. It costs $6.00 per car to go across the bridge. I wish I could see the Golden Bridge in person to see how large it is.

Golden Gate Bridge By Jack Bitar Did you know that the Golden Gate Bridge is not Gold at all? It is Red! The Golden Gate Bridge is in San Francisco and is a landmark for the area. It took 4 years, 3 months and 14 days to build the Golden Gate Bridge. It stands out and it can be seen from long distances. I wish I could see the Golden Gate Bridge because it is so beautiful!

Bridges By: Miles Moffatt – 5th Grade

Portland has twelve bridges that cross over the Willamette River taking people to and from downtown Portland. The first bridge ever built in Portland for cars, is the Hawthorne Bridge. Before Portland had bridges, people used to cross the river using ferries. Ferries are boats that carry people, cars and sometimes horses and carts across rivers. Here are list of the Portland bridges: The St. Johns Bridge was built in 1931. The Burlington Northern Bridge is a railway bridge built in 1908, for trains only. The Freemont Bridge was built in 1973. The Broadway Bridge was built in 1913. The Steel Bridge was built in 1912. The Burnside Bridge was built in 1926. The Morrison Bridge was built in 1958. The Hawthorn Bridge was built in 1910. The Marquam Bridge was built in 1966. The Tillicum Crossing Bridge was built in 2015. This bridge is for bikes, people, The MAX, busses and the streetcar only. The Ross Island Bridge was built in 1926. The Sellwood Bridge was re-built in 2016. The Broadway Bridge is a drawbridge. It is Portland’s first drawbridge. That means the road of the bridge opens up so boats can go under and then it closes back down into a road again so cars can go across. The Bridge of the Gods is a big bridge that goes over the Columbia River connecting Oregon and . The longest bridge in Oregon is the Astoria Bridge. The Astoria Bridge is a little longer than four miles. It crosses over the lower Columbia River. This bridge also connects Oregon and Washington. My favorite bridge is the Marquam Bridge because it is a double decker bridge. It is made of ½ concrete and ½ metal.

5 Guys Restaurant Review By: My’kel Evans – 4th Grade

Gresham has a few great burger places. One of my favorites is 5 Guys. The item that I like best, at 5 Guys Restaurant, is their hot dog. The reason that I love their hotdogs is because of the way they cook them. They split the hotdog down the middle before they grill it. That makes them taste extra good! In preparing for this restaurant review, I asked to do a phone interview about 5 Guys with one of the managers or employees. I had some specific questions that I wanted answers to. I was surprised a few weeks later when an administrator, named Amanda, showed up at the school for an interview in person! Amanda surprised me with more than an interview; she also brought me a shirt, a hat and a gift card! That was super awesome! Read on to find out the answers to the pressing questions about 5 Guys! Me: Why does 5 Guys have peanuts at a burger place? Amanda: Because all of our menu items are made fresh, there is a longer wait for your food than at a fast food place, so we provide peanuts to tide you over until your food comes. Me: Why are the peanuts just in big boxes around the restaurant? Amanda: We do that so that if people come into 5 Guys, who have allergies to peanuts, there is no cross contamination. The peanuts are contained in the boxes. Me: How many milkshake flavors does 5 Guys have? Amanda: There are 10 mix in flavors so the possibilities are endless. My favorite milkshake flavor is a peanut butter and Oreo chocolate shake. Me: What is the most popular thing on the menu? Amanda: The most popular item is the regular cheeseburger. Amanda went on to tell me some more about 5 Guys.text She told me that 5 Guys originated in Washington D.C. A father and his four sons started it. That is why it is called 5 Guys. The 5 Guys restaurant now has 2,000 locations across the United States and London! Sometimes when you walk into a 5 Guys, you might hear someone yell something like “two in the door!”. That is to let the cook know that more orders from people will be coming. Amanda said that the fries they serve, which are so delicious, take a lot of work to make. First of all, they only buy potatoes locally from Oregon, Washington or Idaho. The potatoes are cut, soaked in water and then fried fresh. They shake Cajun seasoning on the fries as they come fresh out of the fryer. Finally, Amanda explained why they cook their hotdogs with a split down the middle. It is so that both sides get cooked and caramelized evenly. So guys, go try 5 Guys! You won’t be disappointed!

Moving someplace new is not always that fun because you have to leave all of your friends. Sometimes you have to leave family behind too. That can make you feel kind of sad.
