Red Panda Facts

● Red Pandas live in temperate forests in , , and ● Although we often think of red panda as a single species, there are actually two recognized of red panda. The subspecies that we have, also known as ​Ailurus fulgens refulgen​s​, is known to be larger and deeper red in color then the second subspecies, ​Ailurus fulgens fulgens. ● Although red pandas and giant pandas share the name “panda”, they are actually not closely related. They share this name because they both eat bamboo! ● 98% of a red panda’s diet is bamboo! They selectively feed on the leaves and shoots. This is why you may often see just stems inside their exhibit because they eat the leaves off of them and don’t usually eat the stems! ● The chinese term for red panda is hunho, which means fire ● Red pandas are generally solitary , except during mating season ● They have a pseudo-thumb, a modified wrist bone used to grasp bamboo when feeding. ● Red pandas have a soft, dense woolly undercoat covered by long, coarse guard hairs that covers their entire body, except their noses.

Red Pandas are listed by the IUCN as an .​ Their primary threats are habitat loss and degradation, human interference and . The illegal pet trade of red pandas has also been on the rise in recent years. Although they are legally protected in India, Bhutan, , Nepal, and , inadequate enforcement of laws and regulations has made these protections less effective. Our Red Pandas are part of their Species Survival Plan, or SSP for short, which manages captive bred populations. They ensure that facilities maintain healthy, genetically diverse populations and promote education and conservation initiatives. By learning more about our red pandas being cared for in , biologists can use this research and knowledge to help red pandas in the wild. One way that you can help Red Pandas and other endangered species is by using resources wisely. Habitat loss and degradation affects animals worldwide. By only using what you need, you can help prevent more resources from being taken from the wild! This can be as easy as always using both sides of a piece of paper when doing school work or an art project, turning off the water when brushing your teeth or when it’s not in use, and recycling!
