  • Red Panda Market Research Findings in China
TRAFFIC RED PANDA MARKET RESEARCH BRIEFING FINDINGS IN CHINA MAY 2018 Ling Xu and Jing Guan KEY points: • Physical market surveys and interviews with local residents in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces found little evidence of any trade in Red Pandas. • A one-off online survey of Chinese websites found only two Red Panda products offered for sale. ©TRAFFIC SAMMI LI • Analysis of CITES trade data found discrepancies in the importer and exporter data ABSTRACT reported by Chinese, US and German CITES Management The Red Panda is a national second-class protected species in China—with both hunting Authorities. and trade prohibited—and is listed in Appendix I of the Convention on International • Based on seizure information, Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). It was upgraded to Sichuan province is the main Endangered on the IUCN Red List of Threatened Species in 2015. During April to centre for illegal trade in Red May 2017, TRAFFIC conducted physical market surveys in areas close to Red Panda Pandas habitats (in Sichuan and Yunnan provinces) and an online market survey of Chinese websites. The results showed that only two dealers (one in the physical market and one in the online market) offered Red Panda products, which were allegedly obtained about 30 years ago (before the implementation of China’s Wild Animal Protection Law). Most surveyed shopkeepers (60/65) had never heard of or had little knowledge of the species. Interviews with local residents, including members of minority ethnic groups who traditionally use Red Panda products, found that almost all were no longer interested in Red Panda products.

Nature's Wonderful Colours Magdalena KonečnáMagdalena Sedláčková • Jana • Štěpánka Sekaninová Nature is teeming with incredible colours. But have you ever wondered how the colours green, yellow, pink or blue might taste or smell? What could they sound like? Or what would they feel like if you touched them? Nature’s colours are so wonderful ColoursIN NATURE and diverse they inspired people to use the names of plants, animals and minerals when labelling all the nuances. Join us on Magdalena Konečná • Jana Sedláčková • Štěpánka Sekaninová a journey to discover the twelve most well-known colours and their shades. You will learn that the colours and elements you find in nature are often closely connected. Will you be able to find all the links in each chapter? Last but not least, if you are an aspiring artist, take our course at the end of the book and you’ll be able to paint as exquisitely as nature itself does! COLOURS IN NATURE COLOURS albatrosmedia.eu b4u publishing Prelude Who painted the trees green? Well, Nature can do this and other magic. Nature abounds in colours of all shades. Long, long ago people began to name colours for plants, animals and minerals they saw them in, so as better to tell them apart. But as time passed, ever more plants, animals and minerals were discovered that reminded us of colours already named. So we started to use the names for shades we already knew to name these new natural elements. What are these names? Join us as we look at beautiful colour shades one by one – from snow white, through canary yellow, ruby red, forget-me-not blue and moss green to the blackest black, dark as the night sky.

These individual distinct vocalizations can play an important role in animal communi- cation because they can carry important information about the age, sex, personality, or social role of the signaler. Although we have good knowledge regarding the importance of individual vocalization in social living mammals, it is less clear to what extent solitary living mammals possess individual distinct vocalizations. Malayan tapirs (Tapirus indicus) are solitary living forest dwellers that inhabit tropical habitats. We recorded the vocalizations of 14 adult Malayan tapirs (six females and eight males) living in seven European zoos to answer the question of whether Malayan tapirs possess indi- vidually distinct vocalizations. Apart from sex-related differences, we found significant differences Citation: Walb, R.; von Fersen, L.; in the harmonic calls of all subjects. Surprisingly, kinship had no influence on call similarity, whereas Meijer, T.; Hammerschmidt, K. familiar animals exhibited significant higher similarity in their harmonic calls compared to unfamiliar Individual Differences in the Vocal or related subjects.

William Giuliano University of Florida, Gainesville, Florida 32611, U.S.A. and Scott Silver Wildlife Conservation Society, Bronx, New York 10460, U.S.A. ABSTRACT The Cockscomb Basin Wildlife Sanctuary, Belize was established in 1986 following Rabinowitz and Nottingham’s 1986 study on jaguar diet and distribution. In 2002, we reexamined jaguar diet following two decades of mitigated human hunting of jaguar prey. We observed high overlap between historical and current jaguar diet constructs. Nine-banded armadillo remained the most frequently consumed prey item. However, collared peccary consumption increased by nearly20percent while dietary breadth decreased by 60 percent presumably reflecting increased prey availability following reduced human hunting pressure. Key words: Belize; Dasypus novemcinctus;diet;Panthera onca; Tayassu tajacu; tropical moist forest. • The 2008 IUCN Red Listings of the World's Small Carnivores
The 2008 IUCN red listings of the world’s small carnivores Jan SCHIPPER¹*, Michael HOFFMANN¹, J. W. DUCKWORTH² and James CONROY³ Abstract The global conservation status of all the world’s mammals was assessed for the 2008 IUCN Red List. Of the 165 species of small carni- vores recognised during the process, two are Extinct (EX), one is Critically Endangered (CR), ten are Endangered (EN), 22 Vulnerable (VU), ten Near Threatened (NT), 15 Data Deficient (DD) and 105 Least Concern. Thus, 22% of the species for which a category was assigned other than DD were assessed as threatened (i.e. CR, EN or VU), as against 25% for mammals as a whole. Among otters, seven (58%) of the 12 species for which a category was assigned were identified as threatened. This reflects their attachment to rivers and other waterbodies, and heavy trade-driven hunting. The IUCN Red List species accounts are living documents to be updated annually, and further information to refine listings is welcome.
