Maintaining genetically viable and demographically stable ex-situ populations can ensure their sustained survival. This can be ensured by using pedigree information contained in studbooks that form the key to understanding the demographic and genetic structure of populations and taking corrective actions as required for effective management of captive populations. The Central Zoo Authority (CZA) has initiated a conservation breeding program for threatened species in Indian zoos.
