Abstract Assessing mammal diversity, distribution, and abundance: piloting arboreal camera trapping as a tool for monitoring endangered red panda in temperate forest of Eastern Nepal by Sonam Tashi Lama I investigated the diversity, abundance and terrestrial activity patterns of medium and large sized wild mammals including a dedicated camera trapping survey for endangered and arboreal red pandas in the non-protected forests of Ilam, Panchthar, and Taplejung districtss of eastern Nepal. This thesis presents the first camera trap-based inventory of the southern Kangchenjunga region. The mammalian inventory was done during the winter and spring season of 2018 with 107 different camera trap locations (53 in winter and 54 in spring). The dedicated camera trapping survey for red panda camera was conducted in 19 different locations of Ilam and Panchthar districts using a pair of camera traps at each site (one on ground and one in tree canopy). There were 903 photographs (96 from ground camera and 807 from arboreal camera) of red panda from 1,620 camera trap days. Over 3,014 camera trap days there were 93,336 photographs taken (5,176 of wild mammals, 3,621 of birds, 11,692 of people, and livestock, 65,488 of false triggers and 6,061 during camera set ups). 5,177 photographs of medium to large sized mammals were used for the analysis in Camera Base. There were 17 species of medium to large sized wild mammals observed belonging to 4 orders and 12 families. Notable species records from this study were red panda Ailurus fulgens, common leopard Panthera pardus, marbled cat Pardofelis marmorata, Asiatic golden cat Catopuma temminckii, Himalayan serow Capricornis thar, Himalayan goral Naemorhedus goral, Assam macaque Macaca assamensis, Himalayan black bear Ursus thibetanus, and Spotted linsang Prionodon pardicolor. The leopard cat Prinonailurus bengalensis was found to have the most diverse distribution covering temperate to alpine habitat. The Northern red muntjac Muntiacus vaginalis was found to be the most abundant species followed by wild boar Sus scrofa, leopard cat, and red fox Vulpes vulpes. ii Despite some limitations, camera trapping was found to be effective in monitoring medium to large sized mammals in this study, particularly for red panda. Employing camera trap surveys for similar kinds of studies, and also for the long-term monitoring of mammals in a study area, is recommended for management of wildlife and effective conservation. We describe Proterothrix paradoxornis n. sp. from Paradoxornis webbianus (type host) and Par. alphonsianus, P. longicaula n. sp. from Par. gularis, and P. sarahbushae n. sp. from Par. verreauxi (type host) and Par. alphonsianus. These are the first records of mites of the Pterodectinae from the Paradoxornithidae. Within Proterothrix, the new species constitutes a distinct complex, characterized by the presence of a long, whip-like aedeagus and spindle-shaped setae e on tarsi I in males.     Cambodia birding report April-May 2017 Mikko Pyhälä - 28 June, 2017 Photo below: Male White-rumped Pygmy-falcon, endemic to Indochina While on a holiday in Cambodia with my wife Pia, I was able to make exclusively birding trips with guide and facili@es provided by the Sam Veasna Center (SVC) in the North in Preah Vihear Province and in the South-East in Mondulkiri Province, as well as on my own in the South in the Kep Province. I also birded in the gardens of the capital city Phnom Penh. SVC based in Siem Reap is Cambodia’s oldest and perhaps also the most competent birding company having obtained much praise from WWF, UN, GEF, BirdLife and other organiza@ons. They have been successful in establishing community-based lodges and camps with local services, contribu@ng to local conserva@on consciousness, in par@cular for some of the most endangered birds and animals of the planet. SVC excels in training their guides who are very knowledgeable about birds, work well with local communi@es, and are efficient and polite with their clients. SVC has also been able to avoid conflicts with na@onal authori@es. CAMBODIA BIRDING [email protected] !1 Cambodia is a good target for birding trips as it has a large number of endemics and many cri@cally endangered species, also animals such as the Dolphin, and large primates in the Seima forest. I managed to get 45 lifers, almost all of them from my wish-list which was not very long, given that I had birded earlier in South-Asia, Vietnam, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia.

It is the least known member of the genus Felis, the common cats. A 2007 DNA study found that it is a subspecies of Felis silvestris; should the scientific community accept this result, this cat would be reclassified as Felis silvestris bieti.[3] Some authorities regard the chutuchta and vellerosa subspecies of the Wildcat as Chinese Mountain Cat subspecies.[1] Chinese mountain cat 2 Description Except for the colour of its fur, this cat resembles a European Wildcat in its physical appearance. It is 27–33 in (69–84 cm) long, plus a 11.5–16 in (29–41 cm) tail. The adult weight can range from 6.5 to 9 kilograms (14 to 20 lb). They have a relatively broad skull, and long hair growing between the pads of their feet.[4] The fur is sand-coloured with dark guard hairs; the underside is whitish, legs and tail bear black rings. In addition there are faint dark horizontal stripes on the face and legs, which may be hardly visible. The ears and tail have black tips, and there are also a few dark bands on the tail.[4] Distribution and ecology The Chinese Mountain Cat is endemic to China and has a limited distribution over the northeastern parts of the Tibetan Plateau in Qinghai and northern Sichuan.[5] It inhabits sparsely-wooded forests and shrublands,[4] and is occasionally found in true deserts.

Custom Trip Report The Central Chinese province of Sichuan provided some notable challenges this year: still recovering from the catastrophic “Wenchuan 5.12” earthquake of 2008, the area is undergoing massive reconstruction. All very positive for the future of this scenically extraordinary Chinese region, but often a headache for tour arrangements, due to last minute traffic controls leading us to regularly rethink our itinerary in the Wolong area in particular, that was not far from the epicenter of that massive quake. Even in areas seemingly unaffected by the quake, huge road construction projects created similar challenges to achieving our original planned itinerary. However, in spite of regular shuffling and rethinking, the itinerary went ahead pretty much as planned with ALL sites visited. Other challenges came this year in the form of heavy regular rains that plagued us at Wawu Shan and low cloud that limited visibility during our time around the breathtaking Balang Mountain in the Wolong region. With some careful trickery, sneaking our way through week-long road blocks under cover of darkness, birding through thick and thin (mist, cloud and rains) we fought against all such challenges and came out on top.

All photos in this report were taken by Sam Woods. 1 www.tropicalbirding.com +1-409-515-0514 [email protected] Page Tropical Birding Trip Report Sri Lanka: January 2015 INTRODUCTION In many ways Sri Lanka covers it all; for the serious birder, even those with experience from elsewhere in the Indian subcontinent, it offers up a healthy batch of at least 32 endemic bird species (this list continues to grow, though, so could increase further yet); for those without any previous experience of the subcontinent it offers these but, being an island of limited diversity, not the overwhelming numbers of birds, which can be intimidating for the first timer; and for those with a natural history slant that extends beyond the avian, there is plentiful other wildlife besides, to keep all happy, such as endemic monkeys, strange reptiles only found on this teardrop-shaped island, and a bounty of butterflies, which feature day-in, day-out. It should also be made clear that while it appears like a chunk of India which has dropped of the main subcontinent, to frame it, as merely an extension of India, would be a grave injustice, as Sri Lanka feels, looks, and even tastes very different. There are some cultural quirks that make India itself, sometimes challenging to visit for the westerner.

Introduction: 1.1 Activity patterns of wild felids: Activity patterns form a part of species’ adaptation to their environment (Beltran & Delibes, 1994) and are therefore a fundamental aspect of animal behaviour (Nielsen, 1983; Weller & Bennett, 2001). Felids are generally considered to be crepuscular and nocturnal in their activity (Kitchener, 1991), although they are well adapted to function in a wide range of light conditions (Sunquist & Sunquist, 2002). Numerous abiotic pressures and biotic interactions are known to shape the temporal behaviour of (cat-like) carnivores (Marinho et al., 2018), including changes in temperature (Beltran & Delibes, 1994; Podolski et al., 2013), light (Huck et al., 2017; Heurich et al., 2014) and season (Podolski et al., 2013; Manfredi et al., 2011), sex and reproductive status of the animal (Kolbe & Squires, 2007; Schmidt, 1999; Schmidt et al., 2009), predation risk (Caro, 2005; Farías et al., 2012) and human disturbance (Wolf & Ale, 2009; Ale & Brown, 2009). Owing to the dietary constraints of carnivores whose preys have their own well-defined circadian rhythms (Halle, 2000; Zielinski, 2000), the availability and vulnerability of prey is, however, considered as one of the main influences on predator temporal activity (Zielinski, 1988; Lodé, 1995). According to Optimal Foraging Theory, predators are expected to synchronize their daily activity with the activity of their most profitable prey, increasing the probability of encounters while reducing energy expenditure (MacArthur & Pianka, 1966; Monterroso et al., 2013; Emmons, 1987).
