Response to ‘Next steps on Book Pahlavi’ (L2/20-135) Arash Zeini 8th May 2020 Introduction Pournader & Hai (2020) might be right in saying that ‘Book Pahlavi may be the best-known complex script not yet encoded in Unicode’. However, I am inclined to add that Book Pahlavi is certainly one of the least researched and understood scripts of late antiquity. Much work is needed before we can make reliable statements about the palaeography of Book Pahlavi. The issues that have puzzled the Unicode experts are in part genuinely difficult to answer. But in my view, the wrong questions have also been asked at times.1 In this document I will attempt to answer the questions raised by Pournader & Hai (2020) which is a very welcome addition to the proposals as it consolidates the questions that have remained unanswered. Please note that my rendering of Middle Persian words and Pahlavi characters is limited by the possibilities offered by the available fonts, which are not designed to accurately represent the scribal idiosyncrasies. If any representations raise more questions, please contact me for clarifications. Question 1 yh/1: The MP suffix -īh, transliterated <-yh>, is written / in Book Pahlavi. Contrary to Meyers (2014:12), the correct analysis of / is ! + + or $ + -. Some- times the scribes abbreviate or rather simplify this sequence of characters to . This happens most commonly at the end of the line, and not in everymanu- script. It is, for instance, very rare in manuscripts of the Pahlavi Yasna. Why Was the Story of Arash-i Kamangir Excluded from the Shahnameh?* Saghi Gazerani Independent Scholar In contemporary Iranian culture, the legendary figure of Arash-i Kamangir, or Arash the Archer, is known and celebrated as the national hero par excellence. After all, he is willing to lay down his life by infusing his arrow with his life force in order to restore territories usurped by Iran’s enemy. As the legend goes, he does so in order to have the arrow move to the farthest point possible for the stretch of land over which the arrow flies shall be included in Iranshahr proper. The story without a doubt was popular for many centuries, but during the various upheavals of the twentieth century, the story of Arash the Archer was invoked, and in the hands of artists with various political leanings his figure was imbued with layers reflecting the respective artist’s ideological presuppositions.1 The most famous of modern renditions of Arash’s legend is Siavash Kasra’i’s narrative poem named after its protagonist. As epic of every nation is a mirror that shows their culture, nature and endogenous life, these relations and coordination of two Iranian and Greek epics, Shahnameh and Iliad and Odysses show proximity of the two nations in mirror of history. .Shahnameh has been divided into three mythological, heroic and historical parts Iliad and Odysses has been also composed by Homerus, famous Greek poet. Iliad book includes explanation of ten years war between Greece and Troas in 24 chapters and Odysses, which has 24 poems, is about Olis, one of heroes of Troas war and figures his braveries. These two great epics which show two known old culture, can be compared from different characteristics. -

When Zal asked for Rudaba's hand in marriage, her father gave him a challenge. In Persia there are cities, labeled from to , and two-way roads, labeled from to . Each road connects a pair of distinct cities. Each pair of cities is connected by at most one road. Some of the roads are royal roads used for travels by royals. Zal's task is to determine which of the roads are the royal roads. Zal has a map with all the cities and the roads in Persia. He does not know which of the roads are royal, but he can get help from Simurgh, the benevolent mythical bird who is Zal's protector. However, Simurgh does not want to reveal the set of royal roads directly. Instead, she tells Zal that the set of all royal roads is a golden set. A set of roads is a golden set if and only if: it has exactly roads, and for every pair of cities, it is possible to reach one from the other by traveling only along the roads of this set. Furthermore, Zal can ask Simurgh some questions. For each question: 1. Zal chooses a golden set of roads, and then 2. Simurgh tells Zal how many of the roads in the chosen golden set are royal roads. -

SPRING 2020 50 KRISTEN HICKEY KING OF THE BIRDS: MAKING SYMBOL, SUBJECT, AND SCIENCE IN THE SKIES OF HINDUSTAN When the Mughals founded an empire in Hindustan, they sought to legitimize their budding dynasty through diverse sources of power. In the texts and art produced by emperors and their courts during the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries, these performances of power constantly featured birds. Birds, enfleshed and imagined, were used as motifs that positioned the Mughals as the cultural descendants of a long Islamic tradition of storytelling and spirituality. Wild and captive birds became an extension of the imperial court as emperors strove to model the legendary rule of King Solomon, who was renowned for his just power over all creatures. During this age of scientist-kings, avians also became catalysts for experimentation and the production of knowledge. This intricate relationship between birds and power reveals a Mughal conception of empire, defined by fluid boundaries between the human and animal kingdoms. They were fascinating airborne creatures, worthy of great scientific attention. The subject of unimaginable hours of artistic labor, they appeared in countless folios, with their feathers adorning the jeweled turbans of only the most powerful emperors.1 The presence of birds illuminated and defined the seat of the Mughal emperor as a ruler in an ancient tradition of powerful kingships. -

This descriptive-analytical study aims to examine some symbols and signs of Ancient Greek-Roman-Persian mythology in sport games and tools. This study attempts to identify shared themes, characteristics and the relationships between different myths to trace the development of cultures. This research proposes common origins for the myths from Ancient Persian and European cultures, and to support psychology theory and Semiotic history. The paper reports the similarities between Ancient Persian and old European mythologies to argue that those mythologies have a common source in spite of its different geographical regions. Mixing these sport symbols with myths indicates legends achieve to the power of signs. This mixing and fusion concept in sports competitions may represent in athletes to achieve myths’ worth. Also, the results show that sport symbols and signs as well as hero myths follow the same underlying pattern and emerged as national symbols and myths but remain as global ones even in contemporary era.
