Intersecting Identities: Cultural and Traditional Allegiance in Portrait of an Emir
INTERSECTING IDENTITIES: CULTURAL AND TRADITIONAL ALLEGIANCE IN PORTRAIT OF AN EMIR Ariana Panbechi In Iranian history, the period between the eighteenth and early twentieth centuries can be best described as an era of monumental change. Transformations in economics, technology, military administration, and the arts reverberated across the Persian Empire and were further developed by the Qajar dynasty, which was quick to embrace the technological and industrial innovations of modernism. 1 However, the Qajars were also strongly devoted to tradition, and utilized customary Persian motifs and themes to craft an imperial identity that solidified their position as the successors to the Persian imperial lineage.2 This desire to align with the past manifested in the visual arts, namely in large-scale royal portraiture of the Qajar monarchy and ruling elite. Executed in 1855, Portrait of an Emir (Fig. 1) is a depiction of an aristocrat that represents the Qajar devotion to reviving traditional imagery through art in an attempt to craft a nationalist identity. The work portrays a Qajar nobleman dressed in lavish robes and seated on a two-tone carpet within a palatial setting. In this paper, I argue that Emir Qasem Khan’s portrait, as a pictorial representation of how he presented himself during his lifetime, is a visualization of the different entities, ideas, and traditions that informed his carefully crafted identity as a member of the Qajar court. -

Abstract: Iran also known as Persia, like its neighbor Iraq, can be studied as ancient civilization or a modern nation. Ac- cording to Iranian mythology King Jamshīd introduced to his people the science of medicine and the arts and crafts. Before the establishment of Gundīshāpūr Academy, medical and semi-medical practices were exclusively the profession of a spe- cial group of physicians who belonged to the highest rank of the social classes. The Zoroastrian clergymen studied both theology and medicine and were called Atrāvān. Three types physicians were graduated from the existing medical schools of Hamedan, Ray and Perspolis. Under the Sasanid dynasty Gundīshāpūr Academy was founded in Gundīshāpūr city which became the most important medical center during the 6th and 7th century. Under Muslim rule, at Bayt al-Ḥikma the systematic methods of Gundīshāpūr Academy and its ethical rules and regulations were emulated and it was stuffed with the graduates of the Academy. Finally, al-Muqaddasī (c.391/1000) described it as failing into ruins. Under the Pahlavī dynasty and Islamic Republic of Iran, the heritage of Gundīshāpūr Academy has been memorized by founding Ahwaz Jundīshāpūr University of Medical Sciences. Why Was the Story of Arash-i Kamangir Excluded from the Shahnameh?* Saghi Gazerani Independent Scholar In contemporary Iranian culture, the legendary figure of Arash-i Kamangir, or Arash the Archer, is known and celebrated as the national hero par excellence. After all, he is willing to lay down his life by infusing his arrow with his life force in order to restore territories usurped by Iran’s enemy. As the legend goes, he does so in order to have the arrow move to the farthest point possible for the stretch of land over which the arrow flies shall be included in Iranshahr proper. The story without a doubt was popular for many centuries, but during the various upheavals of the twentieth century, the story of Arash the Archer was invoked, and in the hands of artists with various political leanings his figure was imbued with layers reflecting the respective artist’s ideological presuppositions.1 The most famous of modern renditions of Arash’s legend is Siavash Kasra’i’s narrative poem named after its protagonist. GENDER DEPICTIONS IN QAJAR ART The Islamic Republic of Iran represents a strong connection to Islam and Islamic culture, but nevertheless, Iran’s history dates back to the Persian Empire, which makes the modern state of Iran a successor to one of the oldest and most powerful civilizations in the history of mankind.
