É por isso que o Centro de Estudos Comparatistas da Faculdade de Letras da Universi- dade de Lisboa, em colaboração com a editora Húmus propõe aqui uma série de publicações dedicada à exploração de “Alteridades, Cruzamen- tos, Transferências”, ou – uma vez que também as línguas se submetem cada vez mais à lógica da travessia e da pluralidade – “Alterities, Cros- sings, Transfers”, “Altérités, Croisements, Transfers”, e que se caracteriza essencialmente pela disseminação de assuntos, pelo nomadismo tópico. O acrónimo ACT denuncia de imediato outra dimensão, agora pragmática, desta empresa: é que cada volume constitui a transcrição de uma performance, isto é, de um conjunto de textos comunicados oral- mente a um público e com ele interactivamente discutidos. Ao decidir encenar regularmente estes ACT e transferi-los da palavra oral para a escrita, pretendem os Coordenadores antes do mais ampliar o âmbito da discussão por via da reapropriação intelectual que ao livro sempre subjaz; pretendem, em suma, contribuir para o continuado debate que a ciência é e, em particular no que diz respeito aos Estudos Comparatistas, para a possibilidade de conversão do ACT em acto de re-conhecimento. Braga** O trabalho de equipa desenvolvido no âmbito do projecto de investi- gação ORION/Orientalismo Português: Textos e Contextos (séculos XIX e XX) – sediado no Centro de Estudos Comparatistas da Faculdade de Letras da Universidade de Lisboa e coordenado por Ana Paula Labori- nho – incide basicamente sobre as imagens do Oriente feitas pelos por- tugueses na literatura, na pintura, na música e em outras artes. O ciclo colonial português, tendo sido formalmente encerrado em 1999 com a transferência da administração de Macau para a República Popular da China, tornou possível estudar o Orientalismo Português de uma perspectiva pós-colonial e em diálogo com a obra seminal de Edward W. Said, Orientalism (1978), que analisa a experiência dos impérios britânico, francês e norte-americano e expõe um conjunto de categorias operativas que se acredita poderem ser extensíveis ao mundo de língua portuguesa. Afi rma Said que o Orientalismo: is a style of thought based upon an ontological and epistemological dis- tinction made between “the Orient” and (most of the time) “the Occident”. Th us a very large mass of writers, among whom are poets, novelists, phi- losophers, political theorists, economists, and imperial administrators, have accepted the basic distinction between East and West as the starting point for elaborate theories, epics, novels, social descriptions, and political accounts concerning the Orient, its people, customs, “mind”, destiny, and so on. Os ensaios apresentados no presente volume da colecção Alterida- des, Cruzamentos e Transferências (ACT 27) são fruto de uma colabora- ção entre especialistas da Índia das áreas de Estudos Literários, História, Antropologia, Direito e Música. A particularidade desta obra consiste, portanto, no seu carácter marcada e determinantemente interdiscipli- nar, para além das novas propostas de abordagem que o leitor encon- trará sobre Goa: este território, com presença colonial portuguesa por quatro séculos e meio (1510-1961), afi gura-se como um espaço desa- fi ante para a Academia, pela necessidade de se entender a hibridez cul- tural que sempre o caracterizou. Os textos aqui reunidos focam-se nos séculos XIX, XX e XXI, ou seja, nos últimos duzentos anos da Índia Portuguesa e as suas transmu- tações pós-coloniais. Como nos recorda o historiador Luís Filipe F. R. Th omaz: A civilização goesa aparece perfeitamente caracterizada no século XIX, após a estabilização das fronteiras e da composição interna da população. Foi à medida que Goa se tornou menos cosmopolita que se tornou mais goesa. Até ao século XVIII vivera para o comércio internacional e para o seu império, que ia de Moçambique a Timor: agora viverá para si mesma. A supressão do Exército da Índia – feudo dos “descendentes” –, em 1871, deu a predominância ao elemento local. Foi então que Goa manifestou cla- ramente a sua vitalidade e a sua personalidade, na literatura, na arte, no jornalismo, na actividade científi ca. (1965, 4) As duas contribuições iniciais de Goa Portuguesa e Pós-Colonial: Literatura, Cultura e Sociedade oferecem, a primeira (por Kenneth David Jackson, da Universidade de Yale), um panorama necessário de toda uma literatura de e sobre Goa, preferindo o seu autor, no lugar de Orientalismo, falar em Orientalidade para as relações luso-indianas, e, a segunda (por Rosa Maria Perez, do Instituto Universitário de Lisboa, antropóloga com vasta produção sobre a Índia reconhecida internacio- nalmente), um tema ainda muito pouco explorado que é o do Orien- 10 AACT27-GoaCT27-Goa PPortuguesa.inddortuguesa.indd 1100 008-11-20148-11-2014 004:02:294:02:29 INTRODUÇÃO talismo praticado pelos próprios orientais. Põem-nos perante questões que, de uma maneira geral, atravessam os restantes ensaios publicados. Procurou-se, na edição dos mesmos, seguir uma linearidade tem- poral relativamente aos temas abordados pelos nossos colaboradores, visto que permite traçar um quadro evolutivo dos variados discursos originários da própria Goa ou sobre ela produzidos a partir de outras realidades socioculturais. Tais temas compreendem não apenas o Orientalismo, mas também as relações entre viagens, impérios e escrita, literatura e prática institucional, colonialismo e identidades culturais religiosas, a literatura goesa de língua portuguesa e a pós-colonialidade. Aplica-se sobretudo, no caso goês, a uma identidade híbrida construída durante meio milénio de coexistências. Foi essa a ideia, tal- vez, de Jeremias Xavier de Carvalho ao fundar a Arcadia Oriente e Oci- dente de Goa, de modelo renascentista, responsável pela terceira edição da História de Goa (1898) do Pe. M. J. Gabriel de Saldanha (1853-1930), “com informações precisas sobre o vasto império português no Oriente” (“Palavras necessárias”, introdução à segunda edição, 1925). Orientado também por esse conceito, foi lançado em 2012, em Margão, Oriente e Ocidente na Literatura Goesa: realidade, fi cção, história e imaginação, de Eufemiano Miranda, tratando da literatura em língua portuguesa dos séculos XIX e XX. Goa era o centro administrativo da Índia Portuguesa, que se esten- dia da África oriental até ao Extremo Oriente; funcionava como centro de uma cultura marítima de diáspora, crisol de um vice-mundo luso-a- siático extremamente diverso. Goa é uma terra entre-culturas exemplar, com uma literatura escrita hoje em concanim, marati e inglês, apoiada por meio milénio de obras de língua portuguesa, para não falar das cul- turas linguísticas primordiais do subcontinente.

    Culture, Institutions, and the Roots of Gender Inequality: 450 Years of Portuguese Colonialism in India Alexander Lehner ∗a aUnversity of Bologna May 2021 Abstract When are economic phenomena persistent over time and when are they not? If they are, do inequalities persist forever or do they converge, and if so, at what speed? By analyzing the Indian state of Goa, this research makes use of a historical quasi-natural experiment to document the persistent effect of Portuguese (catholic) colonialism in a South Asian context. To achieve econometric identification, I apply a spatial regression discontinuity design alongside a border that was abandoned in the 18th century. On both sides of said border the same institutions were in place for almost 250 years. Yet, only on one side the colonizers imposed what I characterize as a "cultural treatment", which pertained mostly to education and societal gender norms. This provides a rare opportu- nity to isolate and identify the effect of culture, holding constant geography, income, and institutions. I find that historically induced gaps in male education can be closed within roughly one generation. Outcomes pertaining to females, on the other hand, are far more rigid, high- lighting the differential degree of persistence. Inequalities in female education do converge, albeit at a much slower speed, while male biased sex-ratios appear to not move at all. I conclude that institutions, combined with the right incentives and equal infrastructural investment, are able to overcome differences in certain important outcomes. Yet, when it comes to deep-rooted cultural norms such as male son preferences, they appear to be little effective.

No século XVI, esse território foi profundamente modificado e os templos hindus foram destruídos. Um levantamento minucioso dos antigos Forais de Ilhas, Salcete e Bardez foi realizado com vistas a recuperar e revisar informações sobre a extensão dos cultos às divindades femininas, com ênfase na sua deusa mais popular, Santeri – Śāntādurgā. A interdiscursividade presente nessa estratigrafia textual, de caráter ambivalente, fornece um retrato indireto e detalhado das transformações em curso naquela época. Palavras-chave: Śāntādurgā, Goa, Foral, estratigrafia textual, interdiscursividade Abstract: This article presents a preliminary analysis of the sacred landscape associated with the goddess Śrī Śāntādurgā in the Old Conquests during the begining of Portuguese colonialism in Goa. In the sixteenth century, this region underwent major changes and Hindu temples were devastated. A detailed survey of the ancient Forals of Ilhas, Salcette and Bardez was conducted in order to retrieve and revise information on the extent of the worship of female deities, with an emphasis on its most popular goddess, Santeri – Śāntādurgā. The interdiscursivity present at this textual stratigraphy shows an ambivalent character, providing an indirect and detailed portrait of the ongoing transformations at that time.     Postcolonial Text, Vol 14, No 2 (2019) Stories from Outside and Inside the Goan Casa Grande: Away from the Community Romance1 Cielo Griselda Festino Goa has been a contested space for many centuries. It has always received people from other parts of the subcontinent as well as from abroad, before the arrival of the Portuguese in 1510 to the coming of the hippies in the 1970s. Each newcomer left an imprint upon the locale. One of the symbols of Portuguese culture on Indian soil was the Great House, the Casa Grande, which represented the power of the Portuguese colonizers, who left Goa in 1961 after the territory was annexed to India. These houses have been described by Caroline Ifeka as “stately Catholic mansions ruled by landed aristocrats whose sensibilities [were] oriented to the West, rather than to the East” (308) and whose division into “unchanging and physically bounded sub-units of interior space” ( 309) pointed to cultural values that permeated not only the architecture of the house but also the highly stratified Goan Catholic society—product of the encounter between the Portuguese and the Indian on the subcontinent.The Casa Grande also stood for what has been defined as “Golden Goa,” the territory regarded as a Western enclave in the East, a product of the Portuguese imaginary in contradistinction to Indic Goa, the Indian side of Goan society, seen as a reaction to Golden Goa (Trichur 17). Ranjeeta Basu, Mtafiti Imara California State University San Marcos, California, USA The objective of this paper is to assess the impact of tourism on the local music culture in Goa from the perspective of musicians. We consider musicians to be one of the principal, yet often understated agents of cultural change. Musicians are both economic and cultural actors. In the economic space, they participate in the labor market of the tourism industry by performing at local restaurants, hotels, cruises, and other tourist venues, and they make changes to their music in the cultural space by responding to tastes and preferences of tourists. This research is an interdisciplinary study of the nexus point among these overlapping spaces in order to understand how musicians have been affected by and have responded to tourism, which may in turn change the collective identity of the community. It is an exploration of relationships among cultural change, power, and identity. Our findings suggest that tourism in Goa has undoubtedly raised incomes of musicians but not necessarily their well-being. Tourism has also significantly changed music culture in Goa. Although the central government has promoted tourism in Goa since the 1970s, it was not until 2001 that the state government of Goa formally adopted the Goa Tourism Master Plan (Goa Department of Tourism, 2001), which focused on tourism as a primary factor in its development strategy.

College of Arts, Science & Commerce) ([email protected]) _____________________________________________________________________________ Abstract: Acquisition of new territories denominated as Novas Conquistas of Goa brought Portuguese in contact with Hindu bailadeira community who were customarily married to temple gods but obliged to satisfy carnal needs of dominant feudal elements who shought their services. Many young girls were offered to temples and once ‘sold’ they became ‘property’ of temple, priests, trustees, of village and for villagers. The community’s engagement with mainstream constituents of society was restricted to participation and offering services during socio-religious functions and festivals. Bailadeiras worked for maintenance of temples and offered other services as ‘love retreats for suffering souls’ and ‘soul that sobs’ visited them for solace. Otherwise they lived on margins of society and referred as ‘casta desgraçadas’.
