State Regent’s Message

One year down for the Larkin Board, and what a wonderful year it has been!! We started off so well…but right off the bat we were hit with a leaking roof and a front porch that needed repair. Because we are DAR and know how to step up to the plate, our membership is getting the job done right. We had a wonderful State Conference in March. Our State Committees reported on accomplishments for the year, and we honored four SAR members and several World War II soldiers. The conference pictures were great! We owe a huge “Thank You” to Mike Donahue and his wife, our own Pam Donahue, Regent of the Port Tobacco Chapter, for taking pictures and putting them on the internet for all to see and select their favorites. Our guests were Connie Olde, recently elected NSDAR Reporter General, and Sharon Withers, our guest speaker for Thursday afternoon, who shed light on what DNA can tell us. We had an excellent speaker Friday night too: Lorna Hainesworth, who shared stories about ’s National Pike. Everyone had such a great time. And the entertainment was outstanding. We are on track with our mission, our membership, improving our numbers, and our members are attending meetings and functions. Our Chapters are having wonderful programs and activities to bring out their membership, as well as friends and prospectives. I am so grateful for all the hard work of the MSSDAR members. I want to thank the new members who have stepped right up to be officers and Committee Chairman for their chapters. It shows how much they want to be a part of an active chapter, and will play an important role in making that happen. Last, but far from least, I want to thank you for inviting me to your meetings, installations, and receptions. I am so proud to say I am a member of the MSSDAR. Looking forward to seeing all of you at Fall Forum, Carol State Regent Carol Dorsey Larkin Carol Dorsey Larkin State Regent Special Events

The conference’s first keynote speaker was Mary Handley, who has been sharing Annie Oakley’s story for over 20 years. In a life characterized as one of perseverance, determination, and joy, “Annie” told her inspiring story of turning skills acquired for survival into a career. She met future husband Frank Butler in a sharp shooting contest -- beating him by one shot -- then rose to international stardom after joining Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show. The Maryland DAR State Conference is well worth attending on so many levels.
