Ross J. Kelbaugh, Maryland’s Civil War Pho- tographs: The Sesquicentennial Collection, is a vast photographic record of the people, places, and events surrounding the war. It is also the largest collection of original Maryland-related Civil War photographs ever published. Donald R. Hickey’s 187 Things You Should Know About the War of 1812 is a concise and informative introduction to the often complex issues surrounding that conflict, presented in an engaging question-and- answer format. These books are numbers five and six of the Friends of the Press titles, continuing the society’s mission to bring forth the best new Maryland history. WING n the twenty-five years leading up to the Revolutionary War, Patrick Creagh and Samuel Galloway, Maryland businessmen, represented a growing class of local merchants who built, owned, and operated vessels in Maryland’s shipping. They Isent them to England, the Caribbean Islands, and to sister colonies in North America. The wind-driven wooden vessels were loaded with Maryland’s agricultural output and brought back household goods, sugar, rum, salt, wine, and people. Maryland’s economy and its ocean trade were increasing in part due to the entrepreneurial spirit of men such as Creagh and Galloway, the diversification of its export cargoes, and the accumulation of capital. The London-based merchants and New England ship owners who had controlled colonial shipping were now facing competition. The Revolutionary War, though, ended the long growth of Maryland trade and shipping, the cornerstones of the colony’s economy. This essay focuses on the period of profound shift from dependence on tobacco exports to Britain to development of a broader agricultural base, which overtook tobacco’s share of the provincial economy. Manufactured products, which had been imported exclusively from Britain, were now increasingly made locally as well as in other American colonies. Vessels were being built and crewed in Maryland. All of these developments describe a more self-reliant economy than the highly dependent tobacco economy that characterized Maryland fifty years earlier. The principal economic change was the decline in tobacco exports and the increase in a wider set of exports: wheat, flour, corn, timber, ships, and iron. At the same time the vessels in Maryland’s overseas trades evolved from three-masted, square-rigged vessels—ships, hagboats, flyboats, and pinks, and a small number of two-masted vessels (brigantines, ketches, and barks)—to a more even mix of ships, brig types, schooners, and sloops. The project was undertaken as an initiative of the National Park Service Chesapeake Bay office, which supports and manages the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. One of the goals of the Captain John Smith Trail is to interpret Native life in the Middle Atlantic in the early years of colonization by Europeans. The Indigenous Cultural Landscape (ICL) concept, developed as an important tool for identifying Native landscapes, has been incorporated into the Smith Trail’s Comprehensive Management Plan in an effort to identify Native communities along the trail as they existed in the early17th century and as they exist today. Identifying ICLs along the Smith Trail serves land and cultural conservation, education, historic preservation, and economic development goals. Identifying ICLs empowers descendant indigenous communities to participate fully in achieving these goals.

Witkowski Marquette University, 2010 What was the legal status of women in early colonial Maryland? This is the central question answered by this dissertation. Women, as exemplified through a series of case studies, understood the law and interacted with the nascent Maryland legal system. Each of the cases in the following chapters is slightly different. Each case examined in this dissertation illustrates how much independent legal agency women in the colony demonstrated. Throughout the seventeenth century, Maryland women appeared before the colony’s Provincial and county courts as witnesses, plaintiffs, defendants, and attorneys in criminal and civil trials. Women further entered their personal cattle marks, claimed land, and sued other colonists. This study asserts that they improved their social standing through these interactions with the courts. By exerting this much legal knowledge, they created an important place for themselves in Maryland society. Historians have begun to question the interpretation that Southern women were restricted to the home as housewives and mothers.

    Introduction to the Ratification of the Constitution in Maryland Founding the Proprietary Colony The founding and establishment of the propriety government of Maryland was the product of competing factors—political, commercial, social, and religious. It was intertwined with the history of one family, the Calverts, who were well established among the Yorkshire gentry and whose Catholic sympathies were widely known. George Calvert had been a favorite of the Stuart king, James I. In 1625, following a noteworthy career in politics, including periods as clerk of the Privy Council, member of Parliament, special emissary abroad of the king, and a principal secretary of state, Calvert openly declared his Catholicism. This declaration closed any future possibility of public office for him. Shortly thereafter, James elevated Calvert to the Irish peerage as the baron of Baltimore. Calvert’s absence from public office afforded him an opportunity to pursue his interests in overseas colonization. Calvert appealed to Charles I, son of James, for a land grant.1 Calvert’s appeal was honored, but he did not live to see a charter issued. In 1632, Charles granted a proprietary charter to Cecil Calvert, George’s son and the second baron of Baltimore, making him Maryland’s first proprietor. Maryland’s charter was the first long-lasting one of its kind to be issued among the thirteen mainland British American colonies. Proprietorships represented a real share in the king’s authority. They extended unusual power. Maryland’s charter, which constituted Calvert and his heirs as “the true and absolute Lords and Proprietaries of the Region,” might have been “the best example of a sweeping grant of power to a proprietor.” Proprietors could award land grants, confer titles, and establish courts, which included the prerogative of hearing appeals.

From incorporation in 1796 the municipal government's evolution has been indicative of this process. From its inception the city government has been dominated by the mayor and city council. The records of these chief administrative units, spanning nearly the entire history of Baltimore, are among the most significant sources for this city's history. This guide is the product of a two year effort in arranging and describing the mayor and city council records funded by the National Historical Publications and Records Commission. These records are the backbone of the historical records of the municipal government which now total over three thousand cubic feet and are available for researchers. The publication of this guide, and three others available on other records, is preliminary to a guide to the complete holdings of the Baltimore City Archives scheduled for publication in 1983. During the last two years many debts to individuals were accumulated. First and foremost is my gratitude to the staff of the NHPRC, most especially William Fraley and Larry Hackman, who made numerous suggestions regarding the original proposal and assisted with problems that appeared during the project.

EVaErn* The General Assembly of Maryland first convened in 1635, less than a year after the settlement at St. Mary's. It began then a notable record of self-government for the colony and State of Maryland, making over the succeeding centuries a solid contribution to the prestige of the legisla- tive process. There would have been no compelling reason in the early seventeenth century to suppose that the Maryland General Assembly would be a successful venture in repre- sentative government. The art of popular government had been evolving slowly for a number of centuries in England, yet by 1634 its development was only rudimentary. Legisla- tive power was still a negative force; the drive and initiative in government remained with the executive, as vested in the monarchy.
