Finding the Maryland 400 Document Packet Documents for the Classroom Finding the Maryland 400 In the summer of 1776, soldiers from the First Maryland Regiment marched to New York, joining with the Continental Army under the command of Gen. George Washington in order to defend the city from the British. On August 27, 1776, the Americans and the British fought the Battle of Brooklyn, sometimes called the Battle of Long Island, the first large-scale combat of the Revolutionary War. The battle was a rout, as the experienced British army overwhelmed the inexperienced and poorly- trained Americans, many of whom had only a few months of military service. As the Americans retreated, a portion of the Maryland troops made a series of charges against a much larger British force. These men, now known as the “Maryland 400,” took heavy casualties, but were able to hold the British back long enough to allow the rest of the Continental Army to escape complete destruction. Finding the Maryland 400 is an effort led by the Maryland State Archives to learn more about these Marylanders, and discover their names, their lives, and their stories. You can read the biographies of the soldiers who fought at the Battle of Brooklyn written so far or check out the blog to read more about the life and times of the Maryland soldiers.     'DEPRIVED OF THEIR LIBERTY': ENEMY PRISONERS AND THE CULTURE OF WAR IN REVOLUTIONARY AMERICA, 1775-1783 by Trenton Cole Jones A dissertation submitted to Johns Hopkins University in conformity with the requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy Baltimore, Maryland June, 2014 © 2014 Trenton Cole Jones All Rights Reserved Abstract Deprived of Their Liberty explores Americans' changing conceptions of legitimate wartime violence by analyzing how the revolutionaries treated their captured enemies, and by asking what their treatment can tell us about the American Revolution more broadly. I suggest that at the commencement of conflict, the revolutionary leadership sought to contain the violence of war according to the prevailing customs of warfare in Europe. These rules of war—or to phrase it differently, the cultural norms of war— emphasized restricting the violence of war to the battlefield and treating enemy prisoners humanely. Only six years later, however, captured British soldiers and seamen, as well as civilian loyalists, languished on board noisome prison ships in Massachusetts and New York, in the lead mines of Connecticut, the jails of Pennsylvania, and the camps of Virginia and Maryland, where they were deprived of their liberty and often their lives by the very government purporting to defend those inalienable rights. My dissertation explores this curious, and heretofore largely unrecognized, transformation in the revolutionaries' conduct of war by looking at the experience of captivity in American hands. Throughout the dissertation, I suggest three principal factors to account for the escalation of violence during the war. From the onset of hostilities, the revolutionaries encountered an obstinate enemy that denied them the status of legitimate combatants, labeling them as rebels and traitors.

The Maryland 400, also called “The Old Line” , were members of the 1st Maryland Regiment who repeatedly charged a numerically superior British force during the The Maryland 400 at the Battle of Brooklyn Revolutionary War’s Battle of Long Island, NY. As the leading conflict after the signing of the Declaration of Independence, the fallen soldiers were the first to die as Americans defending their country, as opposed to colonial subjects rebelling against the monarchy. The Maryland 400 sustained very heavy casualties but allowed General Washington to successfully save the bulk of his nearly surrounded continental troops and evacuated them to Manhattan. This historic action is commemorated in the State of Maryland's nickname, “The Old Line State." The lineage for the Maryland Regiment can be traced to June 14, 1775, when military units were formed to protect the frontiers of western Maryland. In August of that year, another two companies assembled in Frederick, Maryland. They then marched 551 miles in 21 days to support General Washington’s efforts to drive the British out of Boston. Later, more Maryland militia companies, (armed with older, surplus British muskets and bayonets), were formed and then sent north to support Washington’s battles for New York City.

From his mother, her relatives, his father, and others of the older people of Union County and the state of South Carolina,_ he learned much of the useful and valorous services rendered by this family, some members of which in almost each gen­ eration have with varying degrees of prominence left their mark upon the pages of history in times of both peace and war. Naturally he cherished these youthful impressions concerning an American family which dates far back into the colonial days of this republic. As he has grown older, he has collected every fragment of authentic material which he could gather about them with the hope that they might be some day permanently preserved in such a volume as this. But it is correct to state that very likely this ambition would never have been realized had not his cousin, Miss Margaret Adams Gist of York, South Carolina, who for thirty-five years or more has been gathering materials on the Gist family, generously decided to turn over to him temporarily for hi~ use her rich collections of all those years.

REVOLUTIONARY MAIL BAG: GOVERNOR THOMAS SIM LEE'S CORRESPONDENCE, 1779-1782 Edited by HELEN LEE PEABODY HE contents of a chest of several hundred unpublished letters T and papers, belonging to Thomas Sim Lee, Governor of Maryland during the American Revolution, form the basis of the following pages.1 The chest, containing these letters and private papers, together with the rest of his personal possessions, was inherited by his youngest son, John Lee, the only unmarried child still living with his father at the time of his death. John Lee, my grandfather, left his inheritance, the old family mansion, " Needwood," in Frederick County, and all it contained, to my father, Charles Carroll Lee. In this manner the chest of letters descended to the present generation. 1 There is no life of Lee. Standard accounts are to be found in the Dictionary of American Biography, XI, 132, and H.E. Buchholz, Governors of Maryland (Baltimore, 1908), pp. 9-13. 1 2 MARYLAND HISTORICAL MAGAZINE The papers—designated hereafter as the T. S. Lee Collection— when found, comprised over a thousand items. The papers were arranged in packages, tied with tape, and tabulated, which facili­ tated the onerous task of sorting and reading. Many had to be laid aside, as totally unsuited to a compilation of this kind. These comprised invoices, bills of lading, acknowledgements by London firms of hogsheads of tobacco received, orders for furniture, clothing, household utensils—all, in short, that made up the inter­ change of life between our Colonial ancestors and British mer­ chants.
