1 EUROPEAN COOPERATION DAY Sharing borders, growing closer

Be a part of Estonia – Latvia Road Trip! This year on the week of September 16-22 territorial coopera- tion programmes across Europe and its neighbouring countries celebrate the second European Cooperation Day – a day de- signed to appreciate the results of cooperation across borders. Thanks to territorial cooperation, borders in Europe have be- come less visible, and today Europeans are much closer to each other than ever before. Vehicles, people, ideas and inspi- ration now travel freely across borders, just like birds, animals, common problems and common successes have always done.

The stamp hunt has begun! If you are holding this passport and are on one of the busses departing from , Rīga, Tartu or Alūksne on September 20, 2013, your main mission is to sit back, relax and enjoy the ride. Did you believe it? Of course not! Your mission is to be competitive and collect... as many stamps as you can in your Road Trip Passport! At each stop you can get one stamp by just showing up. You can earn more stamps, if you are active and participate in quizzes, competitions and do any other extra thing that is rewarded with a stamp.

Be a part of it, and good luck! At your final destination your passport will be checked by Estonia – Latvia first-level con- trol inspectors, who will recognize the most successful of you on this road trip. The win- ners will get to fly home on a jet. Just kidding, of course! But there will be a prize for the most successful ones! 2 Route Map

11 European Territorial Cooperation European Territorial Cooperation is a tool of the European Un- ion that brings people together, across borders, in order to solve common or similar issues that cannot be easily managed within a single country. By pulling together knowledge and resources, European Territorial Cooperation helps strengthen administra- tion, transport, healthcare, education and so much more. All these actions and projects take place thanks to the involvement of local and regional institutions, universities, companies, re- search institutes and other organizations. Altogether there are 11 European Territorial Cooperation programmes operating in the , and the Estonia – Latvia Programme is one of them. The programmes are financed from the European Re- gional Development Fund, European Neighbourhood and Part- nership Instrument and EU member states’ national budgets.

12 Estonia – Latvia Programme 2007 – 2013 The Estonia – Latvia Programme encourages cooperation be- tween people of Estonia and Latvia through joint projects. The project spectrum is wide – from reconstructing small harbours and roads to creating new food products and learning new tech- nology skills. At the moment there are joint projects working on developing a new Estonian – Latvian dictionary, researching maritime spatial planning, building joint databases for botanical gardens, promoting local cultures and designing new tourism routes in the rivers of Estonia and Latvia. All projects have at least one partner in each country. The smart ones join forces!
