URBAN SOUTHv - ROADS CIVIL & INFRASTRUCTURE, EVANS HEAD

Location Overview Evans Head Department of Defence, with Aurecon, awarded Shamrock Civil Engineering the Urban South – Roads Civil and Infrastructure Project at the Aerial Weapons Range Client in Evans Head, NSW. Department of Defence Scope of Works Commencement Date • Uncover and remove unexploded ordnances June 2017 • Construction of v-drain along machinery access road and shaping of batter Completion Date into drainage line on main ring road July 2017 • Replacement of a stormwater drain with 1800x900 RCBC within a creek Contract Value • Replacement of 450mm on the main ring road $0.3m Department of Defence identified two areas requiring attention. Existing stormwater drainage on Machinery Access Road and Target Road were identified as requiring replacement. Given the close proximity to the target area, the risk of uncovering unexploded ordnances was high. An experienced specialist survey company was engaged to uncover and remove all UXOs within the construction area. DPI Fisheries NSW highlighted that the area was a known habitat for the Oxleyan Pygmy Perch, a threatened fish species listed under both State and Commonwealth Legislation. Shamrock Civil Engineering compiled and submitted a Construction Environmental Management Plan (CEMP) to the Department of Defence to comply with the restrictions imposed. In keeping with the restrictions of the fisheries permit, precast components installed for culvert works on Machinery Access Road were coated with a food grade epoxy to avoid affecting the natural pH of the water. In addition, machinery was prevented from entering the waterway and the pH and turbidity of the water was tested during construction. The breeding season for the Oxleyan Pygmy Perch is September through to April, so all effort was made to complete construction works prior to this. Sandbag dams installed upstream and downstream of the works worked well to prevent the egress of water to the construction area. Pumps were set up to divert water downstream of the works. Department of Defence was happy with the works and the project was completed without any safety or environmental incidents.
