BUCKLEY, Noble Sydney Douglas (Nobby)
SOUTH AUSTRALIAN AVIATION MUSEUM SIGNIFICANT AVIATOR PROFILES NOBLE (NOBBY) SYDNEY DOUGLAS BUCKLEY MBE Nobby Buckley was born on the 26th December 1905. His father was Allan Frank Buckley and mother Elizabeth Kate (nee Douglas, which may explain part of Nobby’s name). He was one of eight siblings and other names included brothers Bright Frank Douglas, Bonnie Boy Douglas and Horatio Octavious Douglas; and sisters Merrie Joie Kitty Douglas and May Flor Muriel Aenone. Nobby’s father was born in Victoria in 1880. He was the son of Allan Knox Buckley, an Irishman from Ballriggan County Mead who migrated to Australia in the 1860s at the age of 17. Allan Frank Buckley was a businessman with farming interests.1 In 1909 he was instrumental in setting up the suburb of Noble Park in Melbourne, N.S.D. Buckley [Photo SAAM collection] which he named after Nobby with streets named after 2 other family members. Nobby was the second oldest son and from a young age displayed an adventurous spirit.3 After attending various primary schools, he was sent to Ivanhoe Grammar School where it was hoped his Uncle Syd (the headmaster) would instill a little self- discipline in him. He then attended West Melbourne Technical School and graduated as a mechanic and certified as a Babcocks and Wilcocks Steam boiler operator inclusive. In 1924 the family moved to South Australia and shortly after he left the home environment and toured the north and north west of the state with a Nash van as a travelling motor mechanic. He spent three years at Wilgena Station with AJ and PA McBride and it was here he learned the business of water well drilling. -

Articles for those interested in Australian Military Aircraft History and Serials Our Editorial and contributing Members in this issue are: John ”JB” Bennett, Garry “Shep” Shepherdson, Gordon “Gordy” Birkett and Patience “FIK” Justification As stated on our Web Page; http://www.adf-serials.com.au/newsletter.htm “First published in November 2002, then regularly until July 2008, the ADF-Serials Newsletter provided subscribers various news and articles that would be of interest to those in Australian Military Heritage. Darren Crick was the first Editor and Site Host; the later role he maintains. The Newsletter from December 2002 was compiled by Jan Herivel who tirelessly composed each issue for nearly six years. She was supported by contributors from a variety of backgrounds on subjects ranging from 1914 to the current period. It wasn’t easy due to the ebb and flow of contributions, but regular columns were kept by those who always made Jan’s deadlines. Jan has since left this site to further her professional ambitions. As stated “The Current ADF-Serials Telegraph is a more modest version than its predecessor, but maintains the direction of being an outlet and circulating Email Newsletter for this site”. Words from me I would argue that it is not a modest version anymore as recent years issues are breaking both page records populated with top quality articles! John and I say that comment is now truly being too modest! As stated, the original Newsletter that started from December 2002 and ended in 2008, and was circulated for 38 Editions, where by now...excluding this edition, the Telegraph has been posted 44 editions since 2011 to the beginning of this year, 2020. -

I have great pleasure in presenting the second Annual Report of the Heritage Council. 2013–14 was the first full year of the operation of the Heritage Act, which commenced in October 2012. There have undoubtedly been some teething problems, but on balance the new Act is working well. When a place is nominated for heritage listing, the new Act requires decisions to be made in a timely fashion. The Council has been meeting these requirements, and this is a good outcome for all stakeholders. There are seven new heritage places and three new heritage objects on the NT Heritage Register. The new system for work approvals is also working well. The majority of decisions in relation to proposed work to heritage places are now taken by the Heritage Council instead of the Minister, and strict new timelines on making decisions about proposed work are being observed. The Council has also been involved at a more strategic level in matters of heritage management, providing input into several proposals affecting the Darwin CBD. -

Presentation Spitfires in Australian Service Vers 2 – Gordon Birkett It was early in World War II when Lord Beaverbrook, the Minister for Wartime Production, originated the idea of the "presentation aircraft”. The idea was a morale boosting exercise for a population that was facing, almost alone, the onslaught of the German war machine in 1940. A "price list" was set out with £5,000 for a single-engine aircraft, £20,000 for a twin-engine aircraft and £40,000 for a four-engine aircraft. In reality they impersonated a defence system without substance and an actual siphon of Australia’s military resources towards their own ends while offering only a potentially high-risk strategic alliance that helped bring Australia to the brink of disaster. As just one outcome on 18 January 1942, over two months after the Japanese air attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, less than half a squadron of Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Wirraway lightly armed training planes alighted from an airstrip at Rabaul on New Britain ostensibly to intercept a Japanese naval air armada of over one hundred modern military aircraft, the outcome of which was a national tragedy. The Australian-made and manned Wirraways were shot from the sky or crash-landed with the loss of most of their crews.
