    The Messerschmitt that crashed twice and they struggled onwards in a south eastern direction. The crew knew that they would not make it back to France and were also aware that they would have to make an emergency landing sometime soon. Landing on one engine could be very hazardous, let alone the possibility of having to come down on uneven farmland. At about 04.25 hours an unidentified aeroplane was seen in close proximity to a Hurricane and Blenheim that were circling Steeple Morden airfield. It was a bright moonlit night, but no positive identification could be made of this unannounced visitor. A signal lamp was used to challenge the aircraft, whereupon it almost immediately fired a red/yellow coloured flare and proceeded to make a landing. Just after it came down the starboard undercarriage collapsed, slewing the aircraft round slightly and damaging the starboard radiator, wing tip, propeller and tail plane. RAF personnel ran over to assist and then made the incredible discovery 19 JULY 1941 that it was German Junkers 88 and proceeded to gather and disarm the crew. Some publications incorrectly state that the crew tried to take off and that they landed by Messerschmitt Bf 109F-2 Pilot: accident due to being disorientated. ES906 Flying Officer M. J. Skalski - killed It is also mentioned that the Junkers 88 was fired upon by an Armadillo Air Fighting Development Unit armoured car, and was thus damaged, preventing take off, this is also incorrect.     National Museum of Flight Guidance for teachers and adult helpers A Journey in Stories Early and first level (Nursery–P2) Prior to your visit we recommend that all pupils and accompanying adults are briefed that the hangars and other buildings are widely spread apart. There is no shelter as you move between the buildings and therefore appropriate footwear, warm and waterproof clothing is essential. Upon arrival pupils should be briefed to understand the following hazards they may encounter: • The roads around the site are often busy and can be dangerous. Pavements and grass verges should be used where appropriate. When moving along the roads, pupils should walk in single file or pairs down the side of the road. • Running indoors is discouraged as the buildings contain various tripping hazards, slippery surfaces and sharp items at eye level. • We ask that visitors do not touch the aeroplanes or display objects unless signage states otherwise. This is to protect both the collection and the safety of visitors. Coach parking A designated parking area is available for coaches bringing groups to the museum. Behaviour We ask that groups are mindful that there will be other visitors enjoying the site whilst they are here. Please moderate noise levels and behaviour accordingly. Eating We are generally able to provide packed lunch facilities for groups on request and therefore ask that unless otherwise discussed that the eating of lunches and snacks is restricted to the designated areas of the museum. We also have outdoor picnic tables beside the shop, the assault course and Education Centre. Accessibility of the site At the National Museum of Flight we aim to make as much of the site as accessible as possible to visitors with additional support needs and disabilities.

The idea was a morale boosting exercise for a population that was facing, almost alone, the onslaught of the German war machine in 1940. A "price list" was set out with £5,000 for a single-engine aircraft, £20,000 for a twin-engine aircraft and £40,000 for a four-engine aircraft. In reality they impersonated a defence system without substance and an actual siphon of Australia’s military resources towards their own ends while offering only a potentially high-risk strategic alliance that helped bring Australia to the brink of disaster. As just one outcome on 18 January 1942, over two months after the Japanese air attack on the American naval base at Pearl Harbor, less than half a squadron of Royal Australian Air Force (RAAF) Wirraway lightly armed training planes alighted from an airstrip at Rabaul on New Britain ostensibly to intercept a Japanese naval air armada of over one hundred modern military aircraft, the outcome of which was a national tragedy.
