PROTECTION OF MONUMENTS

2474. SHRI RAJIV PRATAP RUDY:

Will the Minister of CULTURE be pleased to state:

(a) the State/UT-wise details regarding the number of archaeological sites and protected historical monuments in the country; (b) the details regarding the number of tourists visiting these monuments over the last three years along with the revenue earned by the Government, year-wise and monument-wise; (c) whether the Government has formulated any scheme for maintenance of ancient monuments/forts/temples/heritage sites in the country and if so, the details thereof; (d) the annual budget allocated, and expenditure incurred for preserving and developing these sites along with the revenue earned from these monuments and the reasons for non-utilisation of funds during the last three years, State/UT-wise; and (e) the special measures taken by the Government for protection and preservation of Chirand in the Saran district of ?

(a) There are 3691 monuments/sites as of National importance in the country. The details of monuments/sites (State/UT-wise) is at Annexure-I. (b) The details of tourist visited centrally protected ticketed monuments over the last three years along with the revenue earned year-wise and monument-wise are at Annexure-II, II(a) & II(b). (c) As per the existing policy of the Government, the monuments/sites are declared protected under “The Ancient Monuments and Archaeological Sites and Remains Act 1958 (24 of 1958)” are maintained and conserved by the Archaeological Survey of India as per archaeological norms and principles depending upon the availability of resources and needs of intervention. The policy of Archaeological Survey of India is to protect and preserve monuments and sites declared as of national importance without compromising their authenticity and integrity. (d) The funds allocated and expenditure incurred for conservation, preservation and maintenance of all centrally protected monuments / sites in the country (State/UT-wise) during the last three years is at Annexure-III. The revenue earned from centrally protected ticketed monuments during the last three years is at Annexure-II,II(a)&II(b). (e) The site is protected by Government of Bihar. There is no proposal with the Archaeological Survey of India for protection and preservation of Chirand in the Saran district of Bihar.
