The two periods were characterized by normal to above- average amounts of snow accumulation during winter, and moderate to substantial melt rates in summer. The results presented in this report reflect the weather conditions in the measurement periods as well as the effects of ongoing global warming over the past decades.

Accommodation: Hotel***, double room (D, LG) DAY 02: MEIRINGEN – MAEGISALP – MEIRINGEN An early morning stroll through town, made‐famous by the fictitious death of Sherlock Holmes, Sir Conan Doyle's ingenious detective. A gentle walk up hill takes us to the cable car, bringing us to the Maegisalp, and the high pastures above Meiringen, which offes one of the most spectacular panoramic views in the Bernese Oberland. Accommodation: Hotel***, double room (B, D, LG) DAY 03: MEIRINGEN ‐ ROSENLAUI Setting off through town, we cross the Aare river, heading due south, climbing through meadows and small hamlets past the Reichenball Falls, where Sherlock Holmes staged his own death, presumably falling from the top platform. Following the Reichenbach river, our trail takes us through forested sections above the gorge to the Rosenlaui hotel. First accepting guests nearly 240 years ago, this is a classic Swiss hotel, not to be missed. Accommodation: Mountain Inn, double room (B, D, LG) DAY 04: ROSENLAUI ‐ GRINDELWALD Soaring above the Rosenlaui hotel are the cliffs of the Wellhorn and the Wetterhorn. Our trail takes us through meadows and fields of wildflowers, before reaching the obvious pass at the Grosse Scheidegg, with spectacular views out to the Eiger North Face. From Grosse Scheidegg, we descend steeply, criss‐crossing the hairpins of the road, making our way to the Grindelwald valley and our hotel, located just above town.

    Begegnungen am Lötschberg Encounters at the Lötschberg Deutsch | English Ein Hindernis als Chance Fast unüberwindlich hoch erscheint der Gebirgsriegel, der die Kan- tone Bern und Wallis trennt. Bis heute gibt es nur wenige Stellen, an denen die Menschen das Hindernis überwinden können. Einer dieser Übergänge ist der Lötschenpass. Wer im Mittelalter von Bern in den Süden – etwa nach Rom, zum Papst – gelangen wollte, nutzte wohl diesen Pass. Am Nordfuss des Bergmassivs entstand schon früh eine Siedlung. Hier 1 konnten sich die Reisenden mit Speise und Trank sowie mit geistlichem Beistand stärken, ehe sie die gefahrvolle Passage in Angriff nahmen. Die bescheidene Häusergruppe mit Herberge und Kapelle entwickelte sich im Laufe der Zeit zum stattlichen Dorf Kandersteg. Wie die Bewohner anderer Berggebiete hatten auch die Kandersteger einen harten Kampf um das tägliche Überleben zu führen – auch gegen eine Natur, die sich den Menschen oft feindlich entgegenstellte.     Since the much loved Roger Elkins went home, Scouting in Enfield has missed Bangers & Mash…. So welcome to the new edition, we hope to carry on Roger’s great work. Thoughts & Prayers Christmas is the time of year where we tend to think of family, friends & loved one’s on a bigger scale. This was in evidence on the evening of Sunday 9th December when members of 12th Enfield Scout Group, Gough Park EXU & a few people from the district turned out to support one of our scouting family who has been unwell lately. Tina Beckford (Fox), leader of the 12th Beaver Colony has been battling cancer for a while & people wanted to show support for her at this time of goodwill. Darren Leonard from 23rd Enfield, kindly brought along their Santa sleigh & sound system, which provided the music for the assembled to sing Christmas Carols & more modern songs, this included a rousing rendition of Band Aids ‘Do They Now It’s Christmas’. During the gathering, Tina was presented with a Commissioners Commendation from Corinne Dowsett— district training manager.
