2014Annual Report

Strengthening communities through healthy integration

The Neighbors Link model centers on three strategies – educate, empower, employ – that have a positive impact for immigrants integrating into the community.

Teaching English language skills Over 750 adults improved their ability to speak, read and write Engliswh in 2014. English as a Second Language (ESL) was taught in a variety of ways including classroom instruction (in partnership with Westchester Community College), individual tutoring, computer-based classes and group conversation practice. Facilitating employment opportunities and job skills training Clocking a total of over 7,000 days of work in 2014, over 700 men and women obtained fair-waged work through the Neighbors Link Worker Center. In addition, 250 people learned new job skills and increased their employability by attending training classes at the Worker Center.

Supporting parents to raise successful bilingual, bicultural children In 2014, over 700 parents and children participated in a wide range of programming in the Neighbors Link Family Center. Parents learned effective ways to support their children for academic success, starting with very young children. Through after-school and summer academic enrichment, 180 elementary school children improved their language and math skills. Engaging the whole community in healthy integration Over 300 high school student and adult volunteers offered their time, talent and expertise to support Neighbors Link programming and bring together the community in 2014. In addition, hundreds of police officers, social service workers, health care professionals and school personnel were engaged in meaningful dialog about immigration issues at Neighbors Link training programs in cultural competency. Empowerment At Neighbors Link, more clients are taking on leadership roles at the center and in the community. In 2014, we launched a new “Civic Engagement Series” to actively encourage involvement and advocacy by the immigrant community. The results have been impressive with new leaders emerging to: share their talents by leading workshops for their peers, participate in media interviews on immigration issues, organize special events, and advocate at community meetings. In addition a large Neighbors Link contingent joined the Immigration Coalition’s Immigrant Action Day in Albany in March 2015. HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2014

On November 19, 2014 Neighbors Link hosted a community event to view President Obama’s announcement on administrative relief from deportation. The hope and joy that people felt that night have since been squelched by an injunction preventing the process from moving forward. Volunteers donated all the equipment and their time to set up a beautiful, new outdoor play area for children attending Neighbors Link programs with their parents. HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2014

Over 300 people came to Family Health Day on a beautiful October day for eye and dental exams, cholesterol screening, flu shots, blood pressure readings, and a teddy bear clinic for kids. This successful event was co-sponsored by Northern Westchester Hospital and Open Door Family Medical Centers. Community and school groups collected over 1,000 non-perishable food items for The Neighbors Link Harvest Food Drive. The volunteers and English students had fun together packing bags of food that were essential for families to prepare their holiday meals.

Many generous donors showed their support for the Family Center’s vision of creating a community where parents can raise successful bicultural and bilingual children. By pledging $1.5M through 2015, supporters ensured that the Family Center will be sustained. Family Center programming includes parent education, after school and summer academic enrichment, early childhood programs, family nights and cultural field trips. HIGHLIGHTS FROM 2014
