A staple in the region and an emerging program on the national stage, the Athletic Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. More than 325 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2011-12 school year showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. With women’s golf beginning play as a varsity sport in 2012-13, the program now sponsors 20 competitive intercollegiate teams – including eight teams that have been established or re-established since 2007 alone. And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Three teams earned conference regular-season or tournament championships in 2011-12 and two Valiant squads (men’s soccer and men’s golf) made an appearance in the NCAA Tournament. Fifteen of 21 Valiant squads earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, including the third straight title and seventh in 11 seasons for men’s golf. In addition, the men’s hockey, men’s golf and women’s hockey teams all received national rankings over the course of the year. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2011-12 as well, led by All-America selections Eros Olazabal (men’s soccer) and Dan Fiorito (baseball). Manhattanville also boasted three Freedom Conference Players of the Year and two Freedom Rookies of the Year to go with 47 combined All-Conference honorees. In recent years, at least 35 former Valiants have gone on to play their sport professionally either domestically or overseas as well. But at Manhattanville, athletics is only one part of becoming a well- rounded student-athlete. In the classroom, Valiant athletes consistently achieve higher grade-point averages than the student body as a whole, as evidenced by the 3.219 Athletic Department GPA for the Spring 2012 semester and the fact that all but one Valiant teams recorded a team Manhattanville Quick Facts: GPA of 3.000 or higher for the spring term. In addition to active involvement with many local sports teams and youth organizations both on and off • Cumulative Department GPA over 3.200 campus, Valiant teams sponsor events such as the women’s “Pink Zone” night and the annual “Soccer for a Cure” event to promote cancer awareness. As a result of these and other efforts, the school was the recipient of two Jostens/NADIIIAA Community Service Awards in 2009, one of only 13 institutions honored and the only school to receive “To the valiant of heart, nothing is impossible.” two awards. The service aspect of the Valiant student-athlete experience plays a large role in helping Valiant athletes fulfi ll the college’s mission - Jeanne d’Albret of educating students to be ethically and socially responsible leaders in a global community. The architect and head coach of Manhattanville’s nationally recognized men’s hockey program before stepping aside in October 2011, Levinthal continues his role in keeping Manhattanville in the local, regional and national spotlight. Levinthal has led the Valiant athletic program to unprecedented heights in recent years, as Manhattanville has collected 52 conference championships – 26 regular-season championships and 26 tournament titles – in the last eight seasons alone. In that span, the program has also produced 27 conference Players of the Year, 15 All-American selections and one National Player of the Year. As a head coach with the men’s hockey team, Levinthal stepped aside with the most wins of any mentor in Manhattanville department history, posting a 202-84-28 (.688) record in 12 seasons and twice earning ECAC West Conference Coach of the Year honors. He left as the 14th winningest coach in NCAA hockey history (all Divisions) and sixth among Division III leaders in terms of winning percentage, and led the team to four NCAA Tournaments, four ECAC West Tournament titles and a pair of fi rst-place fi nishes in the ECAC West regular-season standings. Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville as a whole continued its recent string of very successful seasons in 2011-12, with both the men’s soccer and men’s golf teams earning berths in the NCAA Tournament and 15 teams overall reaching postseason play. The men’s soccer team picked up the program’s fi rst-ever at-large bid after a program-record 15-win season, while the men’s golf team dominated the fi eld with a 55-stroke victory at the Freedom Conference Championships and also earned the fi rst national ranking in program history as well during the fall. A pair of Valiants - men’s soccer junior Eros Olazabal and baseball senior Dan Fiorito - were honored as All-Americans by the end of the year, while two student-athletes (Emil Sjoberg and Michael Capozzi) were named MAC Scholar-Athletes of the Year as well.

In 2007-08, Levinthal guided the Athletics Department as it transitioned from the to the Freedom Conference and also reintroduced volleyball and cross country programs to the school. The Valiants saw immediate success in its new conference as two teams clinched Freedom Conference regular-season championships and three programs won conference tournaments in advancing to the NCAA Tournament. The women’s hockey team advanced to the program’s third National Championship game, while the women’s soccer team reached the NCAA Tournament for the fi rst time in program history. Levinthal also led the Valiants to a record-breaking year in their fi nal season in the Skyline Conference in 2006-07, as a program-record six teams won conference championships and a record fi ve teams qualifi ed for the NCAA Tournament. His men’s hockey team spent 13 consecutive weeks as the top-ranked team in the nation and earned its fi rst-ever berth in the national semifi nals, while goaltender Andrew Gallant became the fi rst Manhattanville student-athlete to be named a National Player of the Year. Six coaches were named as conference Coach of the Year, while a program-best four Valiant student-athletes were also named CoSIDA/ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District honorees. And, for the fi rst time ever, Valiant teams won more league championships than any other Skyline Conference team.

Levinthal saw immediate athletic success during his fi rst full year at the helm, as all 14 of Manhattanville’s athletic programs participated in postseason play during the 2003-04 year. Four teams earned bids to the ECAC postseason tournaments, while the women’s ice hockey program earned its third consecutive NCAA Tournament appearance. In 2004, Levinthal also received the honor of beginning a four-year term on the NCAA Men’s and Women’s Ice Hockey Rules Committee, serving as one of 13 overall members and one of just four from Division III institutions. But in addition to athletic success, at the heart of every successful program lie sound resources for its lifeblood – its student-athletes. Therefore, Levinthal has made it a priority to provide the resources needed to create an environment in which Manhattanville student-athletes can achieve at the highest level in all areas: academically, socially and athletically. A 1995 graduate of Hobart College, Levinthal is committed to developing all aspects of the athletics program. In his tenure at Manhattanville, Levinthal’s agenda has included: Student-Athlete Development - Manhattanville continues to be on the cutting edge in the total development of its student-athletes. Valiant student- athletes have exhibited a strong presence and desire to serve the New York area. All varsity teams participate in outreach activities, positively impacting numerous area youth groups, hospitals, schools and agencies. Professionalism - Under Levinthal’s guidance, Manhattanville athletics received a much-needed face-lift. With a new website, logo, team colors and method of business, he has streamlined and energized the department. The result has been increased exposure to Manhattanville student-athletes, improved performance both on and off the fi eld, and increased support from fans and alumni. Exposure - Manhattanville Athletics continues to maintain a strong presence on national and regional media outlets. Levinthal has helped increase the program’s media opportunities as well as displaying the values of the Valiants constantly in the public eye. 2 2012 Manhattanville Women’s Soccer Media Guide Coaching Staff Head Coach Matt Paton Eighth Season • Keene State ’91 Easily the most successful mentor in program history, Matt Paton returns for his eighth season as Manhattanville’s head women’s soccer coach in 2012, having completely rebuilt the program into a perennial contender in the Freedom Conference and a major player on both the regional and national stage. In seven years at Manhattanville, Paton has earned three Freedom Conference Coach of the Year awards and led the program to its only three postseason titles, including the only two NCAA Tournament berths in school history. He has coached 26 All-Conference honorees at the school, including 13 first-team selections and the only three four-time All-Conference picks in program history. In addition, four of the program’s five NSCAA All-Region selections have come during Paton’s time at the school. Paton did perhaps his best coaching job in 2010, when Manhattanville rebounded from a tough start to sweep through the Freedom Conference Tournament and earn the conference tournament title and an NCAA Tournament berth. The Valiant leader took a squad that went 0-11 against non-conference foes during the regular season and galvanized it just in time for conference play: after fighting for a third-place finish in the regular season to reach the postseason for the sixth straight year, Manhattanville advanced past second-seeded Eastern in penalty kicks and then toppled top-ranked FDU-Florham (both on the road) to celebrate another conference championship. Four Valiants were named to the All-Freedom Conference teams following the season, led by four-time All-Conference picks Ali Bromson and Holly Nonis on the first team and Morgan Rebollal and Sonia Occhionero on the second team, marking the fifth straight year that Paton put at least four players on the All-Conference team. In addition, Nonis was named to the NSCAA All-Mid-Atlantic Region third team, making her the first player in program history to earn multiple All-Region honors. Paton led Manhattanville to the most successful season in program history in 2009, as the Valiants posted the third-largest improvement in Division III to finish the year with a program-record 17 wins and the program’s second Freedom Conference regular-season championship in three seasons. The Valiants were regionally ranked by the NSCAA in all but one week over the course of the year and also received the first national ranking in school history with a 23rd-place spot in the final week of the regular season. The season included the best start to a year ever (4-0) as well as the longest winning streak in program history – a dominating 13-game streak that saw the Valiants out-score their opponents by a 41-7 margin with seven shutouts. During the season, Paton became the program’s all-time winningest coach with a 3-1 win at Ursinus College and also earned his 100th career victory as a head coach with a triumph over Ramapo College on October 7. Following the campaign, Manhattanville earned six spots on the All-Freedom Conference team, including Freedom Player of the Year Holly Nonis and a conference- best four first-team selections. As a result, Paton was also named the conference Coach of the Year for the third time in four seasons. In addition, Nonis and Ali Bromson became the first pair of Valiant teammates to earn NSCAA All-Region honors with first-team and second-team selections, respectively. Paton guided the Valiants to a 10-10-0 overall record in 2008, including a 7-2 record in the final matches of the regular season. The team earned a third-place finish in the Freedom Conference and advanced to the semifinals of the conference tournament, the team’s fourth consecutive postseason appearance under Paton. Four of Paton’s players were named to the All-Freedom Conference teams at the end of the season. Paton’s rebuilding project came to fruition in 2007, as the Valiants earned the first NCAA Tournament berth in program history, capping a historic season that saw the team claim its first-ever conference regular-season and tournament championships. After beginning the season 0-11-2 against a treacherous non-conference slate, the Valiants went 5-0-1 in conference play and swept through the Freedom Conference tournament, allowing a conference-low three goals in six Freedom matches. As a result, the team placed a conference-best six players on the All-Conference team, including Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year Holly Nonis. For his effort, Paton was honored with the Freedom Conference Coach of the Year award for a second time. After inheriting a team that went 2-15-1 in 2004 – one year before his arrival – Paton led the Valiants to a then-program-record 14 wins and the ECAC Metro Tournament Championship a mere two years later in 2006, achieving the first postseason tournament title in the history of the Valiant program. Manhattanville’s move from seven wins in 2005 to 14 in 2006 was the second largest improvement in the country and signaled that the Valiant women’s soccer program was poised to become a player on the regional stage. In the opening round of the Skyline Conference Tournament, the second-seeded Valiants toppled Saint Joseph’s (L.I.) College, 3-0 at GoValiants.com Field, breaking Manhattanville’s single-season wins record with their 12th victory of the year. Despite falling in the conference championship match, the Valiants earned the top seed in the ECAC Metro Tournament and claimed the title at home with a 2-0 win over The Paton Profile Farmingdale State College on November 12. In her role as an assistant coach, Flood will play an integral role in the day-to-day operations of the women’s soccer program, including on- and off-campus recruiting, practice and game preparation and management, fundraising and academic monitoring.

Flood spent last season as the top assistant coach for Mike Barroqueiro at Division I Iona College, working with the team’s midfielders and defenders. The Gaels finished the year with a 5-10-2 overall record and a 4-3-2 MAAC record, coming one point short of a spot in the MAAC Tournament.

In addition to her time on the sideline, Flood also received her United States Soccer Federation (USSF) “B” License during the offseason, the second-highest USSF license that a coach can obtain.

After two years away from Purchase, Flood returns to the Valiant women’s soccer program that she helped to resurrect a few years ago. As a part of the winningest class in program history, she helped the squad to a 48-27-7 record in four years and played a role in earning the two highest single-season win totals ever at the school, including an incredible 17-2-1 senior season that saw the team achieve the first national ranking in program history and win a record 13 consecutive games.

On an individual level, Flood was the first player in program history to be a four-time All-Conference first-team selection, earning the honors from the Skyline Conference as a freshman and from the Freedom Conference in each of her final three years. She still ranks sixth in program history with nine career match-winning goals, while also sitting eighth in matches played (79) and seventh in matches started (78) over her career.

Surrounded by a four-pillar lighting system, scoreboard, fully equipped press box and bleacher-style seating, GoValiants.com Field is made up of state-of-the-art Field Turf, a technology that emulates the stability and resilience of natural grass without the obvious maintenance. The field’s durability and elaborate drainage system allow the Valiants to play in all kinds of weather and also allow all 21 Manhattanville athletic teams to make use of the program for training, practice and games. The field itself measures 120 x 72 yards and the four light poles – each 90-feet high – let the Valiants play under the lights several times each year, something few other Division III programs can do with regularity. The press box at GoValiants.com Field is wired for Internet and phone access, allowing for live video broadcasts of Valiant athletic contests through GoValiants.TV and audio broadcasts via WMVL 88.1 FM, as well as live stats produced for every Valiant home game. There are also ample electrical outlets and a photography bay above the press box for use by media and team personnel. A high-powered sound system used for pre- and in-game announcements is also housed in the press box. Adjacent to the GoValiants.com Field is another valuable outdoor athletic venue, Manhattanville’s outdoor grass field. The regulation-size grass field was rebuilt in 2005 and plays host to several soccer matches during the year. While not equipped with lights, the grass field does possess a brand new scoreboard and PA capabilities, which can be accessed through the press box at GoValiants.com Field. soccer team, which defeated the SUNY Institute of Technology, 2-0, in the opening With both turf and natural grass options, the Valiants hold a unique advantage over game of the Valiant Cup on September 3, 2005. Kennedy Gymnasium Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual United States President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics and also serves as the home court for the Valiant men’s and women’s basketball and women’s volleyball programs. With balcony and ground-level seating for 1,000 spectators, Kennedy Gymnasium gives the Manhattanville teams that play inside it a loud and imposing home-court advantage. With bleachers lining the near sideline of the court and a large balcony overhanging the bleachers, there is plenty of room for Valiant friends, family and fans to cheer on their favorite Manhattanville teams throughout the season. The main gymnasium also includes a new scoreboard, a brand-new scorer’s table, as well as phone and internet access that allows all Valiant games inside Kennedy Gym to be broadcast as either an audio or video stream. New lighting was recently installed in the gym as well in order to enhance the fan and player experience. In addition to the main gym, the Kennedy complex also houses a full-length swimming pool as well as the department’s strength & conditioning and sports medicine facilities, which are located on the ground floor of the building and are fully-staffed year round.

Kennedy Gym Facilities Kennedy Gym’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, is flanked by strength & conditioning, sports medicine, locker room and office facilities, as well and a full-length swimming pool and dance studio. All in-season sports have their own space inside Kennedy Gymnasium’s several locker rooms (one of which is pictured to the left), with each player allowed his or her own locker for the full season. Inside the fully-enclosed locker rooms, members of the coaching staff can address their team before, during and after games, while the rooms also serve as a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The rest of the locker rooms inside Kennedy Gym include full shower and locker facilities, as well as access to Manhattanville’s swimming pool, strength and conditioning facilities, and athletic training facilities, all of which are fully-staffed year round. As the day-to-day administrative home of the Manhattanville Athletic Department, the offices of almost all varsity head and assistant coaches at the school are also located within the Kennedy Gym walls, as are the offices of all Manhattanville athletics administrators and support staff. Manhattanville’s athletic trophies and banners, highlighting the program’s best ac- complishments throughout the school’s distinguished athletic history, are also located inside the lobby and main arena of Kennedy Gymnasium. The gym also plays host to several camps and local recreational groups during the summer and throughout the school year.
