Transportation Infrastructure Impacts on Firm Location
Transportation infrastructure impacts on firm location: the effect of a new metro line in the suburbs of Madrid Lucia Mejia-Dorantes , Antonio Paez , Jose Manuel Vassallo Firm location patterns emerge as a consequence of multiple factors, including firm considerations, labor force availability, market opportunities, and transportation costs. Many of these factors are influenced by changes in accessibility wrought by new transportation infrastructure. In this paper we use spatial sta tistical techniques and a micro-level data base to evaluate the effects of Madrid's metro line 12 (known as Metrosur) expansion on business location patterns. The case study is the municipality of Alcorcon, which is served by the new metro line since 2003. Specifically, we explore the location patterns by dif ferent industry sectors, to evaluate if the new metro line has encouraged the emergence of a "Metrosur spatial economy". Our results indicate that the pattern of economic activity location is related to urban accessibility and that agglomeration, through economies of scale, also plays an important role. The results presented in this paper provide evidence useful to inform efficient transportation, urban, and regional economic planning. 1. “Diagnóstico de Convivencia vecinal e intercultural” Distrito de Tetuán COMISIÓN DE ESTUDIOS MESA CONTRA LA EXCLUSIÓN Y POR LOS DERECHOS SOCIALES 1 El Objetivo del presente diagnóstico de la Comisión de Estudios de la Mesa contra la Exclusión y por los Derechos sociales(1) es realizar una evaluación de la situación actual de la Convivencia vecinal e intercultural en el distrito de Tetuán, incidiendo especialmente en las situaciones de exclusión social existentes en el mismo. Relaciones de Convivencia-Coexistencia-Conflicto. Entendemos por “convivencia” las formas de relación (cómo nos tratamos/nos vemos) existentes entre los diversos habitantes del distrito en el contexto social actual. Para afrontar este estudio de las relaciones interpersonales adoptamos la clasificación de los modos de sociabilidad propuesta por Carlos Giménez (2005), según la cual existe un continuum entre las relaciones de convivencia (respeto a la diversidad, confianza y comunicación), coexistencia (relaciones pacíficas pero distantes, sin interés por lo diverso, poca comunicación y evitación del conflicto) y conflicto u hostilidad (incomunicación, confrontación, desconfianza e interés en excluir al otro). Nuestro Foco de interés son las personas y colectivos en situación de exclusión o emergencia social (cómo son tratados/percibidos desde fuera; cómo se sitúan/ven las cosas ellos mismos). A lo largo de este Diagnóstico nos proponemos analizar como inciden una serie de factores determinantes de la exclusión en las relaciones de convivencia. El diagnóstico intenta abordar las causas estructurales que están en la base de los problemas de convivencia en el espacio público (desigualdad social, violencia estructural, paro y precariedad laboral, problemas de vivienda, alimentación, pobreza energética…) Metodología.
