SWEENEYTODD AND LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS are presented through special arrangement with Music Theatre International (MTI). All authorized performance materials are also supplied by MTI. 421 West 54th Street New York, NY 10019 Phone: 212-541-4684 Fax: 212-397-4684 www.MTIShows.com Dear Friends,

We would like to welcome you to Summer Stock Austin's 5th Season. Since we mounted Footloosefour years ago, it has been our mission to provide a once-in-a-lifetime experience for these talented young adults and for our loyal audiences.

As many of you know, SSA is unique in that it is not only a theatre company, but also an educational program. The "company" is comprised of some of the most talented college and high school students in Central Texas. Combining these young performers and technicians with professional directors and designers into a fully functioning summer stock ensemble is unique enough, but the fact that no student pays to be a part of SSA makes us the only program of its kind in the United States .

Your attendance here today will help us to meet some of the expenses for this undertaking. Besides ticket revenue and in-kind support from our sponsors, St. Edward's University and Zilker Theatre Productions, SSA relies on private and corporate donations to cover over 50 percent of its annual operating budget.

We know that economic times have been tough on everyone over the past couple of years, especially arts organizations. If you enjoy what you see today and believe in what we are doing to nurture the next generation of theatre professionals, we would appreciate any support you could give us, whether by donation, bidding on an auction item,or just encouraging people to attend our remaining performances .

[i Thank you again for joining us and we hope you enjoy your theatre experience.

Ginger Morris Managing Director LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS:A STRANGEAND INTERESTINGMUSICAL By Jarrett King and Marett Hanes

Ashman and Menken's Little Shop of Horrors is based on the 1960 black and-white B-movie of the same name. The Little Shop of Horrors was director Roger Corman's lower-than-low budget farce about a bumbling florist who nurses a plant that feeds on humans. The film, which was shot in just three days, gained a cult following over the years. The film is also famous for being one of Oscar-winnerJack Nicholson's earliest film roles-as one of the sadistic dentist's masochistic patients!

Corman's zany idea, apparently conceived while he and screenwriter Charles B. Griffith were in a drunken stupor, I ives on. Since the film's release, the story of Seymour, Audrey, and the "Mean Green Mother" Audrey 11 has been adapted into a musical, a musical film, and an animated television series.

With several tweaks to the film 's plot, book writer Howard Ashman's and composer Alan Menken's musical version opened off-Broadway on January 27 , 1982, where it enjoyed a five-year run. The musical's success made it the third longest-running musical in history and the highest-grossingoff-Broadway Bookand Lyricsby Music by show of all time.

Howard Ashman Alan Menken Little Shop of Horrors draws its tone and themes from several real-world truths from the 1950s. The science fiction aspect of the show stems from the genre's BASED ON THE FILM BY ROGER CORMAN, SCREENPLAYBY CHARLES GRIFFITH surge in popularity after space travel became a reality with the launch of ORIGINALLY PRODUCEDBY THE WPA THEATRE (KYLE RENICK, PRODUCING DIRECTOR) Sputnik 1 in 1957. Girl groups were also iconic of this period. Little Shop of ORIGINALLY PRODUCEDAT THE ORPHEUM THEATRE, NEW YORK CITY BY THE WPA Horrors features its very own girl group of Skid Row urchins, craftily dubbed THEATRE, DAVID GEFFEN, CAMERON MACKINTOSH AND THE SHUBERT ORGANIZATION Crystal, Chiffon, and Ronette, after popular girl groups of this time.

LITTLE SHOP OF HORRORS The media is another topic that Little Shop touches on. With strict television was originally Directed by Howard Ashman codes, much of the news reporting in the 1950s was compromised as sensitive with Musical Staging by Eddie Cowan topics were often censored or softened. Fictional programming largely featured depictions of ideal American homes and lifestyles, ideals that for many people, like Little Shop's Audrey, didn't translate to real life. DIRECTOR/CO-CHOREOGRAPHERGINGER MORRIS ASSISTANT DIRECTOR/ CO-CHOREOGRAPHERKELLY BALES The musical is set in New York's Skid Row, a place historically notorious for MUSICAL DIRECTOR DR. MICHAEL MCKELVEY excessivecrime and drugs. This fact carries over into the 1980s, when Little Shop was written-a decade where President Reagan'sWar on Drugs campaign REHEARSALACCOMPANIST/CONDUCTOR JASON CONNOR swelled to combat a rise in drug use and subsequent crime. STAGE MANAGERANGELICA MANEZ ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER JORDANPETERSON Why has this show withstood the test of time? In part because the musical FILM DESIGN KATIE MCDOWELL is just as sophisticatedly written as it is sophomoric. Moreover, the musical combines a moral tale and a sweet love story. The Dao-WopGirls, a greek VOICEOVERSJIM SWIFT WITH KXANAND DAVIDGALLAGHER chorus of sorts, warns us of the effects of human desire when it turns to DANCE CAPTAIN MADISON PINER excess, whether for fortune, fame, success or even love. At the same time, SPECIAL THANKS TO DAVIDGALLAGHER AND AARONMOTEN the endearing relationship between Audrey and Seymour reminds us that sometimes life's biggest opportunities, if we are true to ourselves, are suddenly standing beside us. Stephen Sondheim is quite possibly the most accomplished composer/lyricist in musical theatre over the past 50 years. His works are known for their incredibly complex angular vocal harmonies, intricate melodic structures, and witty, ambiguous lyrics. An incredibly versatile artist, Sondheim combines opera, rock, jazz, and classical influences with traditional musical theatre compositions. He has had a hand in creating some of the most well-known musicals of the past 50 years, including Gypsy, A Funny Thing Happened on the Way to the Forum, Company, Sunday in the Park with George (for which he won a Pulitzer Prize), Into the Woods, Assassins, and of course : The Demon Barber of Fleet Street.

When it opened on Broadwayon March 1, 1979 Sondheim's musical about the murderous barber set on revengewas an immediate success, winning eight of the nine Tony Awards for which it was nominated. Since its original Broadwayrun of 557 performances, Sweeney Todd has been revived twice on Broadway, toured opera houses across the country, and received a successful film adaptation starring Music and Lyricsby Book by Johnny Depp in the title role. STEPHENSONDHEIM HUGHWHEELER Sondheim's musical is generally the first tale that comes to mind regarding the murderous barber, SweeneyTodd. However, the original character predates the From an Adaptation by CHRISTOPHERBOND 1979 musical by over 130 years, as SweeneyTodd was the antagonist of a London "penny dreadful" entitled "." In this story, a young sailor goes missing while delivering a string of pearls to a girl named on behalf of Originally Directed On Broadway by her lover, who has also disappeared. The sailor was last seen at SweeneyTodd's HAROLDPRINCE barbershop, and Johanna, suspecting Mr. Todd is behind the disappearances, dresses up as a boy in order to "assist" him. She discovers that her lover has been imprisoned and forced to make meat pies out of SweeneyTodd's victims. Originally Produced on Broadway by Richard Barr, Charles Woodward, Robert Fryer, Mary Lea Johnson, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street begins with the protagonist, Martin Richards in Associationwith Dean and Judy SweeneyTodd, returning to London in 1846 having spent fifteen years in an unnamed British penal colony in Australia. Often, if prisoners didn't die from the Manos harsh punishment they endured in these penal colonies, many died from hunger, disease, neglect, or unsafe labor conditions. STAGE& MUSICAL DIRECTOR DR. MICHAEL MCKELVEY ASSISTANT DIRECTOR/ ACTING COACH DAVIDGALLAGHER Under his new name, SweeneyTodd, whose real name is Benjamin Barker, ASSISTANT DIRECTOR MAAROUFNABOUSLI resumes his occupation as a barber. Barbers held an interesting position in Victorian England. Along with cutting hair, barbers often performed surgery on REHEARSALACCOMPANIST/CONDUCTOR JASON CONNOR their patrons. It is said that the red and white stripes on barber poles represented STAGEMANAGER ANGELICA MANEZ the blood and bandagesassociated with such procedures as tooth extractions, ASSISTANT STAGE MANAGER SARAHJENNINGS leeching and other forms of bloodletting. But as with all enduring literary narratives, Sweeney Todd has a timeless moral message. In addition to influencing some of the most important horror stories of our time, the tale of SweeneyTodd warns us of the futility of revenge. Cast The Show SWEENEYTODD JACOB TRUSSELL MRS.
