    - Advertisement - Stemilt awarded license to new University of Minnesota apple cultivar September 8, 2014 The University of Minnesota has awarded Stemilt Growers the license to grow, pack, and market a new, early-to-ripen apple cultivar. The patent name for the cultivar is MN55, and the University of Minnesota plans to trademark a name for the fruit in conjunction with Stemilt in the near future. MN55 was born 17 years ago at the University of Minnesota's apple-breeding program, the same place that the now national phenomenon Honeycrisp heralds from. MN55, a new early-to-ripen apple. The new cultivar has 1 / 3 exceptional flavors, color, and fracture and will be the first variety to harvest in Washington state and go to market come 2017. MN55 is a cross between Honeycrisp and an unreleased variety labeled as AA44 that is sometimes known as MonArk. With similar yet more defined flavor and quality attributes as Honeycrisp and AA44's characteristics to ripen early yet color well and maintain a crisp, juicy texture through the summer heat, Stemilt believes the new cultivar is a winner. "We have a small block of trees that will produce small volumes of fruit come 2017, and a larger planting that will increase volumes for 2018 and beyond," Stemilt Marketing Director Roger Pepperl said in a press release. "We are thrilled at the prospect of having a high dessert-quality apple that will reinvent the month of August for the apple category. MN55 is very juicy and sweet and holds excellent pressures. These are unusual qualities for such an early apple to possess, and the exact qualities that consumers have come to love in an apple." The journey to develop a new apple cultivar is not a quick process and requires great efforts.

    With production and popularity of the SweeTango apple rapidly growing in North America, commercial plantings are now also gathering steam across Europe. The variety, a cross of Honeycrisp and Zestar apples, was developed by the University of Minnesota, and over recent years various trial and commercial plantations have been established in countries spanning the continent. University of Minnesota operations director Tom Hutton told www.freshfruitportal.com the Minneiska trees had been supplied to a number of major apple producer- The first commercial harvest of SweeTango in Europe marketers 'from Spain to Scandinavia'. "These groups are in the process of completing a three to four-year evaluation period to determine the suitability of growing the variety under their environmental conditions," he said. "At the conclusion of the testing period they may be eligible to be licensed for commercial production. Presently we have licensed three commercial groups with others in negotiations and several new groups expressing interest in beginning testing." He said 'strong growth with moderate volume' was expected over the next decade or so, as the variety is believed to fill a 'unique and important niche' in the early part of the season. Commercial licenses have so far been granted to companies in Italy, Austria and Switzerland, but currently the fruit has only been sold in the latter through the variety's exclusive Swiss marketer, Geiser Agro. Geiser Agro's fruit division manager Jurg Burri said the test trees were first planted in 2012 followed by commercial plantings two years later. Some lists were broken down into favorite dessert, cooking, and cider varieties, as well as ones to avoid because of defects, such as disease susceptibility or growing problems. Have you noticed all the new varieties being introduced at the grocery store lately? Some examples: Jazz, Aurora, Candy Crisp, Pinova, Corail, Zestar, and Silken.
