Local Services Parish Letter June 2019

Dear Friends Time is flying by, as I now settle down to write for the June edition of our parish magazine. Liturgically we enter into the long season of ‘ordinary’ time, where the vestments and altar frontals change to green, which not only represents growth, it can also be associated to new life. Throughout the numerous weeks of Trinity, I think it is important that we cherish this time and note its significance within the Christian calendar. It is a time where we can catch our breath after the whirlwind of seasons from Advent to Christmas, into Epiphany closely followed by Lent, then into Easter, through to Ascension and Pentecost…. Phew!!!. What can seem a rather bland time in comparison, ordinary time provides opportunity to settle and reflect on all that was experienced through this busy period. This model should also be applied to our personal lives. Very often we can feel like we are on a treadmill with numerous demands that take up our time and energy, it is no wonder that occasionally we feel overwhelmed. There are simply not enough hours in the day to complete all the small jobs that need doing! Alternatively, it could seem as though there is too much time, especially to those who are feeling lonely or have lost their sense of purpose. Trinity lasts right through to November, it is a perfect time where we too can settle and reflect on our lives; in what we do, what we want and where we would like to be and most importantly, how to achieve it. Jesus knew what was required of him, but despite the demands put on him to perform miracles, heal and teach, it did not prevent him from retreating and spending time alone with God, praying and reflecting on the now and what was to come. He found time with God which centred him and directed him to God’s will. In the hustle and bustle of life, God can often get pushed to one side. Trinity is a time for us to re- centre and re-focus on what God wants for us by meditating on what has been and what is to come, and where God is in all of this. As a person who likes to plan ahead and have all my ducks lined up, more often than not I am always looking ahead to the next task, the next deadline, the next important date in the diary, but in doing this I often miss out on the beauty of living in the present and cherishing God’s blessings. For me there are never enough hours in the day and if I dare to take time for myself I often feel guilty as though I should be doing something more productive. There is a wonderful line in Alice through the Looking Glass, where Alice is talking to ‘time’ after her adventures;

“I used to think time was a thief, but you give before you take. Time is a gift, every minute, every second.” Time is not a thief, it just seems that way when the demands on our time become so much that we are driven by the clock. Over this period of Trinity, I would like to encourage all of us to use this ‘ordinary’ time as a gift, to ask ourselves where we would like our lives to be, what we would like to change, what would we like to do more of, or less of. By allowing this time with God, we are able to open ourselves to new opportunities, and a deeper understanding of ourselves and where God is directing us. This can nurture and transform us in ways that are far from ordinary, but rather extraordinary! God Bless Anna

It was unexpected and unnecessary but we were both touched and can only say a very big thank you to everyone for thinking of us. We are very pleased to be part of church life at St Michael’s and St Mary’s which we regard as our spiritual homes in retirement. Thank you. David Eaton

The Annual Ride & Stride (how we raise the money) County Trusts take part in the Annual Ride & Stride throughout and Wales on the second Saturday of September, with the twin aims of raising money and of having a fun day out. Participants, both cyclists and walkers, ask friends and colleagues to sponsor them with an amount for every church visited on that day. They plan their own itinerary with the help of a list of participating. Cyclists may be any age, though children under 14 should be accompanied by an adult.

FARM DIARY JUNE Most of the cows are out on grass with their calves. We have a few indoors for various reasons, late calvers, old cows for market and mums with young calves, and the outcome now is that all of these need to go; they are out of our calving pattern, and going to the bull now would push our pattern further into summer and we don't want that as calving all year would be chaos. We have ended up with a lot more bull calves than heifer calves and so splitting them up for grazing has created two herds of bull calves and one of heifers and a smaller herd of young mixed calves. Let's hope we have some decent summer showers and it keeps the grass going and keeps all of this lot happy. We are pre- paring for a feed shortage; we have put more fertiliser on and plan to keep more barley straw for feed. Last year was very dry and grass was short and so this year we should be better prepared. Crops are looking well, the advanced growth stage of the winter barley growing on Betchworth common is throwing up a few questions. You can see how the crop has gone to seed on the lighter land, but is still 10 stages behind on the heavier sand, this can only be down to moisture and will affect yield. We have had a dry summer, dry winter and now a dry spring with only 5mm of rain rec- orded in April. Our oilseed rape is coming to the end of flowering, which has been quite long this year and the crop again is short, but it seems to have plenty of flowers and pods. Crop spraying...... This can be quite a controversial subject; we are not organic at Betchworth and this would be difficult on our soils. We do quite a bit for the environment with different environmental schemes which we are involved with. We have made massive strides improving our soils and their structures with minimal tillage, direct drilling, soil testing with precise fertiliser applications and involvement of an independent agronomist to keep all chemical applications to a minimum, legal and above all environmentally minded. I personally have 3 crop spraying qualifications, I'm a member of the 'National register of sprayer operators', I attend annual topical updates and our crop sprayer is regularly ser- viced with an annual 'MOT' style inspection done independently through the 'National sprayer testing scheme'. Spraying records are done in the cab at the time of application, have every detail you could imagine and are kept for ten years plus. All our agrochemicals are supplied by licenced distributors and only supply approved chemicals. If I have to jump through any more hoops I should appear on 'Britain’s got talent' (along with many other farmers!) but be assured if I'm given that next hoop I will jump to keep farming British food safely. This time of year is a period where we reduce the work load from the cattle and put more focus on field work whether it be arable or grassland. Mucking out the cattle yards and storing in fields ready to be spread in the autumn is all part of the spring tidy up. Getting buildings and yard ready for the stock piling of winter feed, bedding and the grain harvest would be put in the 'rainy day' bracket, but we haven't had many of them. Martin

JOKE FOR JUNE A Mafia Godfather finds out that his bookkeeper, Guido, has cheated him out of ten million dollars. His bookkeeper is deaf. That was the reason he got the job in the first place. It was assumed that Guido would hear nothing so he would not have to testify in court. When the Godfather goes to confront Guido about the missing millions, he takes along his lawyer who knows sign language. The Godfather tells the lawyer, "Ask him where the money is!" The lawyer, using sign language, asks Guido, "Where's the money?" Guido signs back, "I don't know what you are talking about." The lawyer tells the Godfather, "He says he doesn't know what you are talking about". The Godfather pulls out a pistol, puts it to Guido's head and says, "Ask him again and tell him if he doesn't answer I'll kill him!" The lawyer signs to Guido, "He'll kill you if you don't tell him." Guido trembles and signs back, "OK! You win! The money is in a brown brief- case, buried behind the shed at my cousin Bruno's house." The Godfather asks the lawyer, "What did he say?" The lawyer replies, "He says you just don't have the guts to pull the trigger."
