A staple in the region and an emerging program on the nationalQuick stage, the Facts Manhattanville and College Athletic Contents Department continues to bolster its reputation as a program on the rise in all areas: athletic achievement, academic success and overall participation. More than 300 Valiant student-athletes (nearly 20 percent of the student body) took part in intercollegiate athletics during the 2009-10 school year showcasing the continued and rapid growth of athletics at Manhattanville. Following the successful integration of the men’s and women’s indoor and outdoor track teams in 2008-09, the program has expanded to 21 intercollegiate teams – including seven new teams that have been established or re-established since 2007 alone. And teams at Manhattanville do not just compete, they win. Seven different programs earned conference regular-season or tournament championships in 2009-10 – a total bettered by only 13 Division III schools – and two Valiant teams (baseball and men’s golf) appeared in the NCAA Tournament. Fifteen of 21 Valiant teams earned berths in their respective conference championships last year, including confer- ence championships for the baseball, men’s golf and men’s hockey pro- grams. Three Manhattanville teams (men’s hockey, women’s hockey and women’s soccer) also received national rankings over the course of the year, the most in a single school year since 2004-05. On an individual level, many Valiant student-athletes were honored in 2009-10 as well. A program-record four Valiants – A.J. Mikkelsen and Mickey Lang (men’s hockey), Katie Little (women’s hockey) and Dan Fiorito (baseball) received All-American accolades, while an incredible six players were named conference Player of the Year. Manhattanville athletes also earned two conference Rookie of the Year awards and a school-record 49 All-Conference honors. In the last 10 years, at least 30 former Valiants have gone on to play professionally either domestically or overseas. 2010-11 Manhattanville Women’s Tennis Media Guide 1 Manhattanville Coaching Staff Head Coach David Slater First Season • Marist ’03 David Slater was named the head women’s tennis coach and assistant men’s tennis coach at Manhattanville in August and begins his first season with both Valiant teams in 2010-11.

As head coach of the Valiant women’s tennis team, Slater will be responsible for all aspects of running the program, including scheduling, on- and off-campus recruiting, and match and practice preparation. He will also assist at both practices and matches for the men’s team as well during the year.

As an undergraduate, Slater spent his final two seasons at Division I Marist College, where he captained the Red Foxes to a MAAC Conference Championship as a senior and led the team to consecutive NCAA Div. I Tournament appearances in his junior and senior years. His freshman and sophomore years were spent at Division II Texas Wesleyan University, where he helped the team to a pair of NCAA Div. II Tournament appearances as a freshman and sophomore.

Slater currently is a Senior Tennis Pro and Financial Controller at the Armonk Tennis Club in Armonk, N.Y., where he has established a reputation of being one of the top teaching pros in the area. He is responsible for working with and coaching many men’s and women’s teams during the summer season. He also coaches a variety of junior and adult groups as well as many individuals on technical and tactical aspects of the game.

Slater has previous collegiate coaching experience as an assistant coach with the Southeastern Louisiana University women’s tennis team in 2003, where he was entirely responsible for enhancing all aspects of the Division I program.

A native of St. Albans, England, Slater currently resides in Port Chester, N.Y. Director of Tennis Operations Albert E. Collins Eighth Season • Dartmouth ’68 A legend in the land of collegiate tennis, Albert E. Collins enters his eighth season as Director of Tennis and head men’s tennis coach at Manhattanville in 2010-11.

Easily the winningest mentor in program history, Collins has recorded a 63-53 (.543) record in his first seven years with Manhattanville and has helped the team to three of the top-six single-season win totals in school history.

He helped Manhattanville to a 13-6 record in 2009-10, marking the program’s third straight double-digit win total, and reached the Freedom Conference championship match for the second straight year. The Valiants received four All-Conference picks for the second straight year, led by Freedom Player of the Year Michael Capozzi, and also won a program-record six titles (out of nine contested) at the Middle Atlantic Conference Individual Championships.

Under his guidance, the Valiants recorded the most wins in school history in 2008-09 with a 16-5 record and also captured the program’s first Freedom Conference regular-season championship and third conference regular-season title in school history with a perfect 7-0 conference mark. In those seven matches, Manhattanville went an incredible 61-1 in individual matches, including a perfect 21-0 on the doubles court.

As a result, Julian Oribe was named Freedom Player of the Year, the first Valiant to earn a conference POW honor since 2003, and Imran Choudhury earned Freedom Conference Rookie of the Year Honors to lead four All-Conference selections. The team also excelled at the year-end MAC Individual Championships, winning five of the nine individual titles.

The seeds for future success were sown in 2008, when the Valiants went 10-6, including a 3-2 mark in their first season with the Freedom Conference. Two of his players, Oribe and Lance Dorfi, earned All-Conference honors, while the duo also teamed up to win the first-doubles title at the MAC Individual Championships.

Manhattanville played in the Skyline Conference during the first four seasons of Collins’ tenure, with the Valiants making appearances in the league tournament in each year. Collins’ Valiant team advanced to the Skyline Conference Finals in 2004 and into the semifinals each of the last three years.

Fourteen Valiants have earned All-Conference honors under Collins, including back-to-back conference Players of the Year and two conference Rookies of the Year. Ten of those honorees have come in the past three seasons, as the Valiants have progressed into a regional power.

A native of Forest Hills, N.Y., Collins played four years of college tennis at Dartmouth, helping the Big Green go undefeated as a senior and earn the number one ranking in New England. In 2001, the Ivy League renamed its championship trophy the Albie Collins Trophy for Collins’ undying support of tennis in the Ivy League.

10 2010-11 Manhattanville Women’s Tennis Media Guide Facilities Manhattanville Courts The Manhattanville men’s and women’s tennis teams have arguably one of the best home-court advantages in the Freedom Conference and in the region thanks to its Manhattanville Courts. The school’s six Har- Tru tennis courts, which are located just across the road from Kennedy Gymnasium and surrounded by the GoValiants.com turf and grass fields and the Manhattanville baseball field, allow the team the convenience of on-campus practices and matches as well as informal training sessions and match play at any time of day. Manhattanville is the only team in the conference and one of the few teams in the region to play its home matches on the Har-Tru clay, which is slightly harder and faster than traditional red clay courts. Although un- conventional in the area, the clay surface protects the health of the Valiant student-athletes by eliminating the strain that regular hard courts place on an athlete, while the softer surface allows the players to work longer points and become more well-rounded tennis players. In addition, unlike hard courts that may crack and bulge with con- stant use and weather changes, Manhattanville’s Har-Tru courts provide consistent bounces and feel each and every day. The tennis programs also employ an outside company to professionally maintain the six courts year-round, allowing the Valiants to continue their home-court advantage for the future. Locker Rooms Dedicated in October 1957 by the family of eventual United States President John F. Kennedy, Kennedy Gymnasium is the day-to-day home of the Manhattanville Department of Athletics as well as the home court for the Valiant basketball and volleyball teams. Kennedy’s main attraction, a basketball and volleyball arena, is flanked by strength, training, locker room and office facilities and is the operational home of all Valiant sports. Most in-season sports have their own space inside Kennedy Gymnasium’s several locker rooms (one of which is pictured to the left), with each player allowed his or her own locker. Inside the fully-enclosed locker rooms, the coaching staff can address the team before and during matches, and the rooms are a perfect congregating spot for teams at any time throughout the season. The rest of the locker room facilities inside Kennedy Gym include full shower and locker facilities, as well as access to Manhattanville’s swimming pool, strength and conditioning facilities, and athletic training facilities. The offices of almost all varsity head and assistant coaches at the school are also located within Ken- nedy Gym, as are the offices of all Manhattanville athletics administrators. Kennedy Gymnasium is also host to several camps and local recreational groups during the summer. Manhattanville’s athletic trophies and banners, highlighting the program’s best accomplishments throughout the school’s distinguished athletic history, are also located inside the lobby and main arena of Kennedy Gymnasium. Strength & Conditioning Focused on the development of the student-athlete, the Manhattanville Department of Athletics views strength and conditioning as one of the most important developmental tools. The facilities inside Kennedy Gymnasium are a testament to that philosophy. The strength and conditioning department is housed inside Healthworks, a large, state-of-the-art weight and cardiovascular training facility located on the bottom floor of Kennedy Gymnasium. The room includes several power development stations, glut ham benches, decline abdominal benches and physioballs and cardiovascular machines. In late 2007, Manhattanville College opened a new Student Center in the center of campus that includes a first-class workout area for the general student population, thus making Healthworks the exclusive strength and conditioning home of Valiant student-athletes. Healthworks is supervised by Manhattanville’s Head Strength and Conditioning Coach, Corey Crane. Crane, along with his assistant strength and conditioning coach, is responsible for managing and providing the design, implementation, supervision and evaluation of the strength and conditioning program utilized by all 21 Valiant varsity sports. Athletic Training The Sports Medicine facilities at Manhattanville College are located inside Kennedy Gymnasium and are the place where all Valiant student-athletes come to receive com- prehensive health care from any of Manhattanville’s three fully-certified, full-time athletic trainers. The athletic training staff has five main objectives: prevention of athletic injuries; recognition, evaluation and treatment of injuries that do occur; rehabilitation; health care administration and professional development. The athletic training staff also has on-campus access to state-of-the-art training methods, including ultrasound capability, electrical muscle stimulation and whirlpool treatments. Scott McIver, a veteran of nearly 20 years in sports medicine, is Manhattanville’s Head Athletic Trainer. McIver worked for the Valiants from 2000-02 following a 12-year stint as Associate Athletic Trainer at , and came back to the school for a second stint beginning in 2006. JR Barkamian joined the staff in August 2008 as Assistant Athletic Trainer after spending time at Division I Fordham University. The department also employs a full-time Graduate Assistant Athletic Trainer to help coordinate the school’s 21 sports. 2010-11 Manhattanville Women’s Tennis Media Guide 11 Manhattanville College Manhattanville College, located just north of New York City in thriving Westchester County, has been educating young people on its beautiful 100-acre campus for over 150 years. Salas said his mission in Iraq was to “win the hearts and minds of the Iraqi people,” but he continued that while the service was at times challenging, “it was the letters that kept me going. From kids, boy scouts, students. A letter was like a piece of gold, something you wanted to keep for the rest of your life.” When Salas got back to Manhattanville, he wanted to help his fellow soldiers overseas and approached former College President Richard A. Berman with an idea. Together with Berman and administrator Anne Gold, they launched the My Soldier program on February 14, 2004. Participants in the My Soldier program, who are not limited to Manhattanville students, send letters and occasional care packages overseas to boost the quality of life for American troops. A non-politically affiliated program,My Solider has been wildly successful, with participants from all 50 states and over 400,000 people in total, reaching more than 175,000 U.S. troops.
