John Jez is in his seventh season as head men’s lacrosse coach at LIU Post. Jez is only the eighth head coach in the 54- John JEZ year history of the program. Th e Pioneers have reestablished Head Coach the strong winning tradition and perennial national dominance of the men’s program at the . Seventh Season Team and individual success have gone hand in hand during Jez’s tenure. Two national titles and three conference championships have come under the watch of Jez. Th irty six players have earned East Coast Conference year end honors, in- cluding Mike Messina, who was named 2008 Rookie of the Year honors and capped off his career with ECC Player of the Year and National Player of the Year honors in 2011. Greg Cerar earned USILA Most Outstanding Player and Attackman of the Year as well as ECC and ECAC Player of the Year distinction in 2009. Jez has also helped his players to earn a combined 35 All- America distinctions, including 12 First Team, 15 Second Team and eight Honorable Mention selections. Under his tutelage, Messina, Cerar and Michael Cama

Z were honored as top players in their respective positions by the

E USILA. Messina was named the 2011 Outstanding Player of the

J Year as well as the Lt. Donald McLaughlin Jr. Award for Most Outstanding Midfi elder. In 2009, Cerar was honored as the

N Lt. Col. J Turnbull Award winner for Outstanding Attackman of the Year and received the Lt. Raymond Jenners award for H National Player of the Year. Cama was honored as both the 2010

D Commissioner Honor Roll. LIU Post posted a 16-2 overall record and 9-1 conference A mark in 2011 and fell one game shy of the national champion- E ship game. Th e Pioneers led the conference in points per game

H HEAD COACH JOHN JEZ (19.17), ground balls per game (39.50) and goals against average (5.28). Th ey also played tight defense on penalty kills, allowing 17 goals on 82 chances. Messina was named the InsideLacrosse as well as the ECC and ECAC Player of the Year and 10 Pioneers received All-America and All-Conference mention. In 2010, LIU Post captured its second straight and third overall national title in a rematch over LeMoyne at M & T Bank Stadium in Baltimore, Maryland. Th e Pioneers bounced back from a halftime defi cit to defeat the Dolphins, 14-9, and fi nished the season as the top-ranked team in the fi nal USILA national poll. Th e Pioneers led the national in man-up scoring percentage and had the highest winning percentage among all Division II teams with a program-best 16-1 record. Th e 2009 team fi nished as NCAA Division II National Champions after defeating LeMoyne, 8-7, in front of more than 24,000 fans at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough, Massachusetts. A veteran lacrosse coach at the high school, collegiate and Frank VITOLO professional levels, Frank Vitolo enters his seventh season as the program’s top assistant and defensive coordinator. Assistant Coach “Frank is one of the top defensive coaches in the nation,” Seventh Season says head coach John Jez. “His hard work and dedication has continued our program’s winning tradition and without him we would not be at the level of competitiveness we are at today. His game preparation is unmatched. LIU Post lacrosse is blessed to have his guidance and leadership. I do not know what we would do without him.” Prior to joining Jez’s staff , Vitolo was an assistant with the New Jersey Pride of the Major League Lacrosse from 2002-05 and also spent eight seasons on the coaching staff at North- east-10 member Pace University. Vitolo served as the Setters’ head coach from 2000-02 and his team was nationally ranked during that time. In 2011, Vitolo’s defense posted a 5.28 goals against aver- age, which was the highest in the program’s history. Erik Boyd (Second Team), Dan DaCosta (Second Team), Jason Cranmer F (Second Team) and John Wood (Honorable Mention) each

A longtime resident of Somers, N.Y., Vitolo spent over 20 years as head coach at Lakeland High School, where he accu- mulated more than 300 victories. During the summer of 1990, Vitolo coached the Hudson Valley boys’ lacrosse team to a gold medal fi nish at the Games. He is a member of the Lakeland High School Athletics Hall of Fame and was inducted into the Hudson Valley Chapter of the Lacrosse Hall of Fame in 1995. Vitolo received his bachelor’s degree in Physical Education in 1972 from Ithaca College. While at Ithaca, Vitolo competed in the and lacrosse programs. Vitolo and his wife, Kathi, are the proud parents of daugh- ters Nicole, Kim, Sara and Katy. Th ey currently reside in Baby- lon, N.Y.

Steinberg, the ninth president of Long Island University, has served the institution since 1985. Th e son of the late Rabbi Milton Steinberg of ’s Park Avenue Synagogue, he was born in New York City and was educated at Phillips Academy at Andover, Malvern College in England and Harvard College, from which he graduated magna cum laude and Phi Beta Kappa. After a Fulbright year at the University of the and a year at Columbia University on a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, he returned to Harvard, where he earned an M.A. in East Asian studies in 1963, and a Ph.D. in history in 1964. Dr. Steinberg also has received several honorary degrees. He began his teaching career in the Department of History at the University of Michigan, where he rose to the rank of full professor. In 1973, he joined the administration of Brandeis Uni- versity as executive assistant to the president, becoming vice president and university secretary in 1977. Th e author of numerous books and articles on Southeast Asia and, in particular, Philippine history, Dr. Steinberg has taught, lectured and written about this important area of the world for a third of a century. His fi rst book, “Philippine Collaboration in World War II,” won the University Press Award in 1969. “Th e Philippines: A Singular and a N Plural Place,” now in its third edition, was described by U.S. Ambassador to the Philippines Nicholas Platt as “the best single-

O volume guide to understanding the Philippines, past and present.” He also edited and co-authored both editions of “In Search of

I Southeast Asia,” one of the major textbooks on the area. Dr. Steinberg recently collaborated with top scholars from around the

T world to co-author “Th e Emergence of Modern Southeast Asia,” a new and multifaceted history of this complex region. In addi- tion, he is a co-author of “Religion and Religiosity in the Philippines and Indonesia: Essays on State, Society and Public Creeds,” A which was published in 2005. R Dr. Steinberg was a member of the international observer team that monitored the Philippine presidential elections when T Corazon Aquino defeated Ferdinand Marcos. He has written numerous op-ed pieces and has been a consultant to UN agencies,

S the United States government, the Ford Foundation and others. I He and his wife, Joan, a chanteuse and real estate executive, reside in McGrath House on the LIU Post Campus. Th e couple N has two Cavalier King Charles spaniels, whom they sometimes bring to football games on campus. His greatest personal accom- I plishment: raising his two superb sons, Noah and Jonah. A Paul H. Forestell - Provost, LIU Post

T S Paul H. Forestell, a professor of psychology and an internationally renowned marine mammal O scientist, was appointed provost of the LIU Post Campus of Long Island University in July 2008.

P A seasoned administrator, Dr. Forestell served as vice president of the Pacifi c Whale Foundation in Hawaii, as dean of undergraduate programs at Southampton College of Long Island University,

U and as associate dean of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences at LIU Post. I

L LIU POST ADMINISTRATION As provost, Dr. Forestell leads one of the New York metropolitan area’s most respected private university campuses, with an enrollment of nearly 5,700 undergraduate, 3,100 graduate and 2,300 continuing education students. He is responsible for campus operations, program development, admissions and recruitment, retention, fi nancial aid, athletics, student aff airs, public safety, and buildings and grounds.

His collaborative leadership style has contributed greatly to enhancing the student-centered mission of the University. In 2008, Dr. Forestell established the Division of Student Retention & Academic Support Services at LIU Post to assist students in achieving academic and career success. A champion of experiential learning, he coordinates study abroad and fi eld research op- portunities for students, and teaches classes in whale and dolphin behavior.

Dr. Forestell graduated from the University of New Brunswick in Canada with a bachelor’s degree in psychology and philos- ophy in 1972 and a master’s degree in experimental psychology in 1976. He earned a Ph.D. in comparative psychology from the University of Hawaii in 1988. Bryan Collins enters his seventh year as the Director of Athletics at LIU Post. Under Collins’ leadership, the Pioneers’ athletic programs have seen a continual rise in both the regional and national levels of athletic performance and academics.

Notable achievements during his tenure include 29 conference titles as well as NCAA cham- pionship titles from the 2007 and 2012 women’s lacrosse teams and the 2009 and 2010 men’s lacrosse teams.

Th is past season, the men’s and women’s cross country, men’s soccer, men’s and women’s bas- ketball, women’s swimming, women’s lacrosse and softball all participated in NCAA tournaments. D DIRECTOR OF ATHLETICS BRYAN COLLINS

al polls. Th e Pioneers fi nished fi rst in the East Coast Conference Commissioner’s Cup standings R for 2009-10 - the second Cup win (2006-07) during Collins’ tenure. Prior to the 2007-08 academic year, the football and fi eld hockey programs gained admission into the esteemed Pennsylvania E State Athletic Conference. C

Off the fi eld, Collins has included community service as a part of his players’ responsibilities. T

During the 2011-12 academic year, LIU Post student-athletes completed a department record 3,484 hours of service. He cur- O rently serves as the Chairman of the National Kidney Foundation – Long Island Kidney Walk. R

Collins is responsible for the creation of a department mission statement based on the foundation of athletic excellence as well as the initiation of the Academic Commitment Excellence (ACE) program, designed to improve attendance and academic O achievements in the classroom. In addition, LIU Post athletic programs are mentored by campus faculty and staff through the Adopt-A-Faculty program. F

A In 2007-08, Collins established a Student-Athlete Orientation seminar and handbook as well as an annual student-athlete recognition dinner to recognize both athletic and academic success. Th e department also established an Academic Honor Roll T to honor student-athletes’ who receive a minimum 3.0 grade point average. H

In addition, Collins serves on the East Coast Conference Ex- L ecutive Committee and is also involved with the NCAA/ADA E

Mentoring Program. He currently serves on regional advisory T committees for men’s lacrosse and baseball. I

C Collins has overseen improvements to the athletic facilities on campus, including the installation of FieldTurf S on Hickox Field as well as a brand new state-of-the art sound

system for the stadium. In addition, all of the outdoor athletic B fi elds have undergone improvements to their playing surface. Th e Pratt Recreation Center Gymnasium, home to the basket- R ball and volleyball teams, received a new sound system as well as a working press row table for media and game operations Y staff . played linebacker on the Red Storm’s football team and was I the recipient of the Dr. Peter Vitulli Award, given to the St. N John’s student-athlete who demonstrated the most courage, perseverance, dedication and spirit of self-sacrifi ce in seeking S to attain the highest ideals of sportsmanship. Collins received his bachelor’s degree in Business Administration in 1987.
