3 1. Introduction

The idea for the competition arose within the ICE in about 1990 because of poor communication between the construction professions aiming to deliver projects for clients.

Teambuild is a communication, management and team-working competition to enhance successful project delivery. It is not a design competition.

It is based on teams of 6 young professionals under 30 years of age. Ideally each team has as wide a range of different professional disciplines as possible and should certainly include an , a civil / , a building services engineer, contractor and surveyor.

There is a pre-qualification process in order to select 9 teams.

The finals weekend is based on a real project, usually a mixed development, inner city brownfield site. The site client often provides a judge or a representative who attends the competition.

There are nine judges representing our sponsor institutions. The working party members attend the weekend and are there to help, advise and encourage teams when necessary and to hand out questions or tasks set by the judges at each stage.

There are 6 stages to the competition:

Stage 1 – Presentation of Masterplans Teams present their Masterplan of the site to the judges and other competitors.

Stage 2 – Outline Design Judges as end users will set a design brief for part of the site. Results are presented in a written report for individual team presentation at the end of the stage.

Stage 3 – Procurement Strategy Teams are to act as the clientsʼ advisor, preparing a report that outlines a programme, procurement strategy and summary risk analysis. This is submitted to judges as Developer in written form for verbal presentation.

Stage 4 – Detailed Design Teams receive a detailed design brief. Teams must produce a large-scale section showing the detailed integration of all design disciplines. Teams present to judges as end-users.

Stage 5 – Construction Stage Teams must demonstrate how they would set up a site compound and deal with a major incident.

Stage 6 – Final Presentations Four finalists are selected for stage 6, which is a presentation on the completed project to judges acting as potential future clients.

4 2. Background

The competition was run under the auspices of the CIC for fifteen years from 1992. Teambuild UK is now an independent charitable organisation dedicated to running this annual competition. All Directors and Working Party members are volunteers.

Construction Skills now provide the main sponsorship.

The constituent members of institutions within CIC individually and collectively sponsor the competition with funds, encouragement, publicity and benefit from the results. Within the imperative of sustainability challenging our industry, the institutions recognise the need for interactive working to achieve this objective.

The contribution of the sponsors is greatly appreciated. The major sponsor contributing £10,000 is Construction Skills; CIBSE, the CIOB and the IStructE Educational Trust all contributed £3,000; the RICS, Society of and the ICES contributed £1,000. Prizes were supplied by the Worshipful Company of Constructors and the Worshipful Company of Chartered . A judges discretionary prize was also awarded, from the collective funds.

The 2009 event was held at the Eynsham Hall conference centre in Oxfordshire over the weekend of 20th-22nd November. This site offered a venue in which all team members, judges, sponsors and the competition rooms themselves could be accommodated at the same location.

The site chosen for the 2009 competition was Bexleyheath Civic Centre, which the Working Party visited to agree the specific area to be used. Our thanks go to Bexleyheath Council for allowing their site to be used, and to Richard Saxon MBE for facilitating the site visit and for his assistance and support. We are indebted to John Laing and EPR Architects for their generous help in producing site and briefing information.

Mayer Brown International and BDP hosted the Working Party and Event Logistics Ltd provided event organisation and secretarial support.

5 3. Supporting statements from sponsors

Richard Rooley, originator of the competition: "Client satisfaction, quality and profit in the industry can only be achieved when the whole team comes together. The teams in Teambuild demonstrate their skills and develop leadership and teamwork during the competition".

CIOB: “Build your network with Teambuild”

ICES: "ICES supports the Teambuild project since it is a superb opportunity for the training of young professionals across boundaries which will help provide integrated solutions for the benefit of construction clients."

ICE: "CABE has said: "We have great architects, landscape architects and engineers. How is it that their talent is not bearing fruit in the shapes and patterns of our urban landscape?" Teambuild demonstrates that the talent of the best young professionals does bear fruit through individual skills, leadership and teamwork. The ICE heartily endorses this vital element of CPD".

IStructE: "Improved teamwork saves everyone time and money, and adds value to the performance of the whole team. Teambuild provides a great opportunity for young construction professionals to see how this can really work for them."

RICS: “Teambuilding and partnership may be overused buzzwords, but in the built environment professions they are really important. It is only through initiatives, such this type of integrated approach, that we will improve the performance of the construction industry, for the benefit of clients and communities alike.”

6 4. Feedback from Judges

Chris Richards, CIOB There was clear evidence that as the weekend progresses that the teams did begin to work as a whole and that certain members clearly came through as leaders in the team.

Charly Clark This is the third year that I have acted as a judge for this competition and I am still astounded by the capability and enthusiasm demonstrated by the competitors. This competition must represent extremely good value for money as a training exercise for any company in the industry and should be highly recommended.

Liz Green, IStructE Edicational Trust Teambuild allows the rule book to be thrown away, its all about collaboration of disciplines, integration of design and team work. Its not a design competition, its about people. Teambuild has dispelled the myth that engineering is limited and constrained.

Philip Thomas, RIBA With the competition project in mind it was good to see how many teams looked at the wider context of urban grain of Bexley and how many followed a truly integrated design approach.

Michael Sullivan, RICS Incredibly impressive results looking at how much pressure they are under.

Chris Northey, CIBSE Once again a weekend full of excitement hard work, commitment, communication and learning has taken place for some of the most talented young people within the construction industry. The standard of the entrants to this competition increases every year and it is exciting to see the expectations and development of new skills from all of the participants. It is without doubt the most unique and inspiring competition that exists within our industry. Teambuild is by far the most influential and vital training forum that exists for young professionals within the Construction Industry and long may it continue into the future.

Anne McCann, RICS A very enjoyable weekend. An innovative event which stimulates the competitors to work and play together.

Summer Events

Following the launch of the website (www.teambuilduk.com) as a tool to publicise and promote the competition, the feedback from the competitors indicated that there are lots of avenues for developing the site to a fully functioning tool which will act as a point of reference for information about the competition, past, present and future.

2009 was the first year that we ran summer events: this year we plan some more, so keep in touch! In April 2009 we hosted an evening Pub Quiz, in association with BDP (2008 Winners) and RIBA Bookshops; and in July 2009 an evening drinks reception ʻlaunch partyʼ, kindly hosted by Mayer Brown International LLP in their new offices with panoramic views over Liverpool Street. Both events were a great success and a chance for past- and prospective teambuild competitors to meet up socially.

We encourage you to sign up on our website for updates, and make regular visits to see what weʼre up to in 2010. You can also find us on the G4C ʻningʼ networking site for young construction professionals, recently established at http://g4cnet.ning.com/
