President’s Report 2018

Introduction

It’s hard to believe that the Federation has now passed its first quadrennial and will be turning 5 years old in September 2019. It was time to introduce a new constitution in 2018 to ensure the voice of the Disciplines in the equestrian structure; and also on the Exco. This would align the Provincial Structure with the National Structure to ensure that all geo-political matters were dealt with. This then, necessitated that elections be held and the new Exco was elected in June 2018.

Unfortunately, Michelle Behrens resigned late in the year, due to business commitments and she also resigned from the District structure. We thank her for really putting Eden Equestrian on the map and making it a compliant District with an excellent working relationship with the Eden District Sports Council. Thank you to this new Exco team for all their assistance and inputs into the Federation.

Awards

Winning awards is becoming more difficult, but Eden Equestrian got the award for the community builder of the Year i.e. Kalma Hayes for her work with Pacaltsdorp riders Club near George. She then was invited to the Provincial Awards ceremony in Pinelands. Jane Shephard (Cape Unicity) and Fred Brooker (Eden) were honoured as a sporting legends by the Minister of Sport for the Western Cape with a number of Sporting Legends from a multitude of Sports, at a beautiful ceremony in Agter-Paarl.

Funds and Grants

We were once again most grateful to receive a R15 000 admin levy from Western Cape Department of Culture and Sport (DCAS) via the Western Cape Province Sports Confederation (WCPSC). Districts receiving funding were Overberg, Cape Winelands and CT Unicity as well as West Coast. We also

received a grant of R10 000 from SAEF that allowed us (with some surplus funds) to pay a secretary a small stipend

African Horse Sickness

We continue to have discussions with DCAS about the huge costs that our athletes incur when returning from Events outside of the AHS surveillance zone. We requested SAEF to assist us with this problem and they set up a meeting between ourselves and the SA Equine Health & Protocols. We discussed numerous issues such as backlog of vaccination permits at the time. They were awaiting EU audits at the time which would determine if they can export again. The last exported horse from Cape Town directly into the EU was in 2011. We discussed potential funding of horses that are forced into quarantine before being allowed back into the Western Cape surveillance zone area.

Marketing

Our Face Book page continues to flourish with 1660 members and membership growing on FB page Our website has been revamped as indicated in last year’s report. Cape TV continue to feature Equestrian programs including jumping and showing as highlights this year.

Teams District and Provincial Colours

We have had over 12 teams being awarded provincial colours. Our Western Cape Teams continued to dominate the line-up with Dressage, Show jumping, Showing and Endurance Teams winning the open Teams. This year eventing was not able to send a Team as the Event was being held in Nelspruit, an area riddled with African Horse Sickness which then forced competitors to remain in Gauteng for a month. There were not sufficient people to make up a Team.

George Riding Club hosted the second Inter-District multi-disciplined competition with awarding District colours for Show Jumping and Showing. In 2019, the plan is that George will host the competition including also Dressage and then the Competition will be open for Bidding for 2020 and beyond. Inter-Provincials hosted in our Province were Show jumping in Plettenberg Bay, Mounted Games in Stellenbosch and Tentpegging in Beaufort West.

Transformation

In 2018 we worked with Western Mounted Games to hold an entry level show at Saron. The village of Saron is a small community outside Porterville and the community has about 300 free roaming horses. We also arranged with the Lipizzaner’s that approximately 100 children from Saron, Darling, Mamre and other communities had transport to come and see their show at Mistico

Districts status

We are pleased to report that all of the six districts are members of their District Sports Councils and last year 5 of the 6 districts applied for funding for 2018/2019.

Thank you

I would like to thank my EXCO for their amazing assistance this year. We made a really good team and were able to cover all the bases to attend to the various commitments that were required.

The District chairs and their respective teams work really hard to keep up with all the work at District Sports Council and they are i.e. Sue Klein in Overberg, Michelle Behrens and recently Louis Botha in Eden, Marcelle Minnaar in Central Karoo, Gail Canovi in Cape Winelands, Alec Dick took over from William Mugal in the West Coast and Scharleen Keating took over in the Cape Town City District.

Locally, we thank Francios Dercksen and Karin McNally for judicial, Jackie Nicholl looking after commission work, Philippa Grasso for the calendar maintenance, Rosemary Bartlett for coaching and then Elizabeth Steyn who co-ordinated the huge task of Western Cape Provincial Team and supporter Clothing and also Lisa Patrick that arranged the Youth Champs Clothing.

We would also like to thank the SAEF and the Secretary General, Wessel Strauss and also Sharlene Venter for their continual support. JP Naude and Lyndon Julies from the WCPSC for their support. Within DCAS, the Minister of Sport, Anroux Marias, Director of Sport, Dr Lyndon Bouah, Thabo Tutu, and Agnetha Jeftha and many more in that department.

There are so many people who keep the sport alive and who volunteer their time, expertise and effort i.e. club officials, discipline officials, all the discipline judges, stewards, event organizers in this province - thank you.
