CUPRA, winner of the prize for best practice in business

• The Right Honourable Mr. Quim Torra, President of the Catalan Government, brought the engineer’s gathering to a close

• Industrial engineer Joan Amorós i Pla received the award to a professional career

Barcelona, 13 June 2018 · In the framework of yesterday evening’s Engineer’s Day celebration, the Catalan Industrial Engineers (EIC) awarded the prize for best practice in business to CUPRA. The values of the profession were highlighted at the celebratory event which was presided over by the Right Honourable Mr. Quim Torra, President of the Catalan Government. “Engineers carry these values in our genes; they made the cotton industry possible in the past and encourage us to remain enterprising in the present”, said the Official Catalan Association of Industrial Engineers (COEIC) dean Josep Canós.

Engineer’s Day 2018, organised by the Catalan Industrial Engineers (EIC) and held yesterday at ’s Mercat de les Flors, was presided over by the Right Honourable Mr. Quim Torra, President of the Catalan Government, the Honourable Ms. Maria Àngels Chacón i Feixas, Minister of Business and Knowledge of the Catalan Government, Catalan Industrial Engineers Association President Jordi Renom and Official Catalan Association of Industrial Engineers dean Josep Canós, among other authorities. This year’s celebration highlighted the values of the profession and exemplified them with relevant projects and awards. A standout award presented by Josep Canós was the prize for the best practice in business, which went to CUPRA, SEAT’s new, independent brand, for being an ambitious project and creating a new brand that aims to captivate car enthusiasts, conceived on the concepts of uniqueness, sophistication and performance.

CUPRA director Of Strategy, Business Development and Operations Antonino Labate pointed out that “it is a true honour for us to receive this distinction. It is the first recognition for CUPRA since it was created last February.” Labate added that “our great challenge is to promote the unique brand in order to captivate the most discerning car lovers.”

Official Catalan Association of Industrial Engineers dean Josep Canós inaugurated the session with a moving tribute to his predecessor, Jordi Guix, and pointed to the major role of the industrial sector in the recovery of the Catalan economy in recent months. “In the last quarter of 2017 alone, Catalan industry recruited 25,600 people, which represents 63% of procurement in ”, he said, highlighting as well the expansion of industrialisation beyond the edge of Barcelona to the inland regions of Segarra, Conca de Barberà or Garrotxa, among others. He concluded by saying that “ will be an industrial region, or cease to exist.”

Award ceremony for prizes and grants Catalan Government President Quim Torra presented the award to a professional career to industrial engineer Joan Amorós i Pla, for his commitment to manufacturing vehicles at Motor Ibérica and Nissan and non-profit entities such as FERRMED, which is engaged in promoting freight transport by train along the Mediterranean corridor. Catalan Industrial Engineers Association President Jordi Renom presented the “Serrat i Bonastre” journalism

award to journalist Piergiorgio M. Sandri, a specialist in robotics and new technologies.

Other award winners included Xavier Vallvé i Miquel, with the team at Trama Tecnoambiental (TTA), with the creativity award; and Margarida Boixareu, MSc in Industrial Engineering from the Barcelona School of Advanced Industrial Engineering (ETSEIB), with the youth creativity award. With the support of the Caja de Ingenieros Foundation, grants were presented to the PhD theses by Alexandre Serrano i Fontova, from the ETSEIB, and Daniel Alegre i Carrasquer, from the Terrassa School of Advanced Industrial, Aerospace and Audiovisual Engineering. During the event, new professional members and associates of each EIC degree were also presented with their membership pins.

The academic recognition award was presented to Xavier Ortega i Aramburu, a professor at ETSEIB and the Polytechnic University of Catalonia for his teaching career in the field of nuclear technology and energy technologies. Jordi Renom emphasised that “the AEIC and the COEIC are increasingly structured and operate like a business in a competitive market. For this reason, they must organise themselves as such without losing sight of their inherent values and contribute added value to their professional members and associates.”

The Catalan Industrial EEnginnginnginngineerseerseerseers (EIC) is made up of the Catalan Association of Industrial Engineers (AEIC), which was created in 1863, and the Catalan Professional Association of Industrial Engineers, established in 1950, with a membership of more than 10,000 professionals. In addition to its headquarters in Barcelona, the EIC has presence throughout the territory with a delegation in the Vallès and branches in Central Catalonia, Girona, Lleida and Tarragona. Jordi Renom is the President of the AEIC and Josep Canós is the dean of the COEIC.
