Project Description What is illumination?

ArtsinStark and Visit Canton, the Stark County council and the Stark County convention & visitors’ bureau, are working together to facilitate an inaugural Canton light festival, Illumination. Five temporary, public, light art installations are being commissioned with a budget of $2,000 each.

Five individual or artist teams will be selected based on submitted qualifications. Each finalist will be assigned a location to create a temporary light art instillation; projection mapping, light , and other light art. Light art installations will be housed in select storefronts or projected onto select buildings throughout downtown Canton during Illumination from January 1- February 28, 2021.

During Illumination, in addition to these five temporary displays, the Dancing in the Light: Major Works from the Age of American Impressionism will be on exhibit at the Canton Museum of Art, light mapping created by OBLSK will take place on the Cultural Center for the Arts, and restaurants and storefronts will be engaged to participate with thematic displays and special offers. illumination • Art Call

Artist Scope of Services

A $2,000 budget is inclusive of all work by the artist including, but not limited to, proposals, artists’ fees, design, engineering, , software, studio and project administration, travel, fabrication, all materials, and installation.

Locations will be assigned to the selected artists based upon information provided during the application process. Following agreement to the assigned location, selected artists will be asked to submit their design proposal for the final approval of ArtsinStark, Visit Canton, and the host venue location.

Selected artists will create and install their approved design concept to be on display from January 1-February 28, 2021. Timeline

Eligible Students, professional artists, and artist teams, are all invited to submit qualifications for consideration.

The call is open to artists nationally, but special consideration will be given to artists that live or work in Stark County, Ohio. illumination • Art Call

all about the Selection Process

A panel of professionals representing the commissioning organizations will review and select finalists. Finalists will be notified, provided with location details, and asked to submit a design proposal for final approval before commencing.

The panel will select artists based on the following criteria, in order of priority:

artistic excellence evidence of working in the field of light art evidence of working with a community or in the field of public art evidence artist currently lives or works in Stark County, Ohio*

*Artists are not required to live or work in Stark County, however special consideration will be given to those that do.
