Numerous studies indicate strong similarities among children's early drawings, which suggests that primarily universal factors of influence are operative. Cross-cultural similarities and differences among adult art suggest that universal factors are still operative although relative factors predominate. A model of artistic selection possibilities is developed based on the premise that art consists of options selected from universal and relative domains, circumscribed by the imperatives of time, place, and level of skill acquisition. Similarities and differences between child and adult art as well as variable personal and cultural endpoints are accounted for when artistic development can be described as a selection process rather than a step-by-step predefined progression.     arts Article Intermediaries and the Market: Hans Rottenhammer’s Use of Networks in the Copper Painting Market Sophia Quach McCabe Department of History of Art and Architecture, University of California, Santa Barbara, Santa Barbara, CA 93106, USA; [email protected] Received: 1 February 2019; Accepted: 16 June 2019; Published: 24 June 2019 Abstract: In Willem van Haecht’s Gallery of Cornelis van der Geest, The Last Judgment by the German artist Hans Rottenhammer stands prominently in the foreground. Signed and dated 1598, it is one of many copper panel paintings Rottenhammer produced and sent north of the Alps during his decade-long sojourn in Venice. That the work was valued alongside those of Renaissance masters raises questions about Rottenhammer’s artistic status and how the painting reached Antwerp. This essay examines Rottenhammer’s international market as a function of his relationships with artist-friends and agents, especially those in Venice’s German merchant community. By employing digital visualization tools alongside the study of archival documents, the essay attends to the intermediary connections within a social network, and their effects on the art market. It argues for Rottenhammer’s use of—and negotiation with—intermediaries to establish an international career. Through digital platforms, such as ArcGIS and Palladio, the artist’s patronage group is shown to have shifted geographically, from multiple countries around 1600 to Germany and Antwerp after 1606, when he relocated to Augsburg. Yet, the same trusted friends and associates he had established in Italy continued to participate in Rottenhammer’s business of art.     Classicism, Modernism, Postmodernism, and Importance of Communication Taylor Stevenson Art History II Prof Jason Bernagozzi Midterm Exam March 09, 2016 Art and societies have long since been integrated, with both realms reflecting each other through understandings, values, and ideas. When either realm changes its ideologies, the other realm tends to reflect those changes in a similar form. This is prevalent in the understanding of art movements over the course of history, especially with three periods of art: Classicism, Modernism, and Post Modernism. Through these art movement periods, we can see how ideologies of the artist have evolved from working for other professions that use art as a means to an end, to using art as a way to communicate their own ideas, to creating art for the viewer to decide on the meaning. Many artworks that were taken from (or inspired by) Greek and Roman cultural art are considered to be classical. This may be because at this point in time, the societies behind these works of art have established an aesthetic standard that serves as a fundamental basis for other art movements. The Editors of Encyclopædia Britannica note “’classic’ is also sometimes used to refer to a stage of development that some historians have identified as a regular feature of what they have seen as the cyclical development of all styles.” When applied to art (especially art in the western/European world), these “classic” greek and roman roots placed emphasis on a realistic form, and line over color in two dimensional pieces1. Sculptures of these times, while considered important, did not necessarily translate into the aesthetic view of the next generation.

Aquatint was first invented in 1650 by the printmaker Jan van de Velde (1593-1641) in Amsterdam. The technique was soon forgotten until the 18th century, when a French artist, Jean Baptiste Le Prince (1734-1781), rediscovers a way of achieving tone on a copper plate without the hard labour involved in mezzotint. It was however not in France but in England where this technique spread and flourished. Paul Sandby (1731 - 1809) refined the technique and coined the term Aquatint to describe the medium’s capacity to create the effects of ink and colour washes. He and other British artists used Aquatint to capture the pictorial quality and tonal complexities of watercolour and painting.

The richly decorated church interior is, unfortunately, one of the best kept secrets of the city. In the semi permanent art installation presented in this paper, imagery showing the church interior is projected on the outside walls of the entrance of the church. By projecting onto a spherical mirror suspended from the entrance ceiling, the projection is reflected onto three walls and the ceiling. The resulting image, when seen from the street-level outside, creates an perspective illusion. The beginning of the auction offers works by renowned Old Masters, with impressive runs by Albrecht Dürer and Rembrandt van Rijn. Scarce engravings by Dürer include his 1514 Melencholia I, a well-inked impression estimated at $70,000 to $100,000, and Knight, Death and the Devil, 1513 ($60,000 to $90,000), as well as a very scarce chiaroscuro woodcut of Ulrich Varnbüler, 1522 ($40,000 to $60,000). Rembrandt’s etching, engraving and drypoint Christ before Pilate: Large Plate, 1635-36, is estimated at $60,000 to $90,000, while one of earliest known impressions of Cottages Beside a Canal: A View of Diemen, circa 1645, is expected to sell for $50,000 to $80,000. The highlight of the sale is a private collection of prints and drawings by Impressionist master Camille Pissarro. This standalone catalogue surveys Impressionism’s most prolific printmaker, and comprises 67 lots of prints and drawings, including many lifetime impressions that have rarely been seen at auction. One of these is Femme vidant une brouette, 1880, a scarce etching and drypoint of which fewer than thirty exist. Only three other lifetime impressions have appeared at auction; this one is expected to sell for $30,000 to $50,000.
