James Paton of , , .

James was born in Kilmaurs, on 20Jul 1787. He was the third son of Hugh “Dreghorn” Paton (1728 – 1800) and his wife, Mary Brown (1746 – 1800). He married Helenora (or Elenora) Wylie in Stewarton, Ayrshire on 9 Nov 1810.

James was a joiner to trade and around 1812, he, with his wife Helenora and probably young baby Hugh, moved to Garlieston in the parish of in Wigtownshire (South West Scotland), where he was employed as a joiner working at House.

Galloway House

Galloway House adjoins the estate village of Garlieston in the parish of Sorbie, on Bay, and the building of it had begun in 1740 for Lord Garlies, later to become the sixth . The House was designed by John Douglas who was assisted by John Baxter as site architect. Further additions were added in 1841. The House is now in private ownership, but the gardens are owned and maintained by the Galloway House Gardens Trust which was established to ensure that the arboretum, woodland and walled garden would remain open for public enjoyment.

In the 1841 census, the Paton family, which now consisted of 5 boys and 6 girls, was recorded as staying in the “Sheds” at Galloway House with two of the sons, Hugh and James, being joiner journeymen and another two, John and George, being joiner apprentices.

The mother of the family, Helenora, died on 25 May 1850 and the place of death is given as the Commercial Inn, Garlieston

In 1851 the family was recorded as staying in High Row, Garlieston and James was a Joiner employing 5 men, probably his three sons, Hugh, James and Robert as well as two non-family members as apprentices. It is not clear whether this was all work at Galloway House or if he had expanded to general work. However, the one son, John, was now recorded as being a “spirit dealer” and a daughter, Helenora or Helen was working as a bar maid. Also the following marriage notice was in the Galloway Advertiser and Wigtownshire Free Press in Nov 1851: "At Garlieston, on the 27th ultimo, by the Rev. Mr Blair, Mr William M'Bryde, merchant, Liverpool, to Helen, third daughter of Mr Paton, Commercial Inn, Garlieston."

In 1856 James gave his occupation as an Innkeeper in Garlieston and by 1861 it was given as being a Spirit Dealer at 1 High St, Garlieston. It is therefore assumed that High Row is the same as High Street and that No. 1 was the address of the then Commercial Inn. At some point between 1851 and 1861the name of the establishment was changed to the Queens Arms as this is where James was the proprietor in 1861 (See extract from the Garlieston Directory for 1861 below). When James died in 1865 his profession was given as Inn Keeper.

Garlieston Directory 1861 The Queens Arms

The earliest published Valuation Rolls are for 1855/6 and these show that James Paton was the Proprietor of two adjacent houses in Garlieston and the one occupied by himself was valued at £15.15s. This was the second highest valuation on the page and double to three times more than the other typical houses listed, so it was a house of a considerable size. The Valuation Roll for 1864/5 confirms James Paton as the Proprietor of “Inn and Stables” as well as the adjacent house which was occupied by his daughter, Mary, and her husband Thomas Stewart (Jnr). Following the death of James, the Valuation Roll of 1876/7 shows the Proprietor as John Paton (his son) together with Annie Paton (daughter) and Isabella Paton (granddaughter).Mary Stewart, who was now a widow, was occupying the adjacent house.

Moving on to 1885 and the property is now officially recorded as the “Queens Arms Hotel and offices” with John Paton, retired joiner, and Misses Annie and Isabella Paton, as the joint Proprietors and the tenant/occupier/inn-keeper being George Cassell. By 1892, Robert Paton (John’s brother) was the inn- keeperand, following his death in 1904, this role was taken over by his wife Agnes Paton. Following the deaths of John (1904), Isabella (1913) and Agnes (1914), Annie became the sole Proprietor and Occupier of the property as well as a being the Proprietor of several other buildings in the village, a situation that continued until Annie’s death in 1921.

It would then appear that the Queens Arms was bought around 1922 by William Lymburn and, sometime before 1931, by William Irving and then sometime before 1938 by James Millar Clark. There is also a John Paton listed as owning several properties in Garlieston, but excluding the Queens Arms, and this could be a grandson of James, who was a Banker in , and it may be that he inherited these from Annie or maybe he was the representative of a number of family members.

Today, the building that housed the Queens Arms is a private residence. It is a Listed Building with Historic Environment Scotland, who give the following description:

“Earlier 19th century, 2-storey, 3-bay Inn. Door with letterbox fanlight to centre. Rendered walling to front and rear, smooth rusticated quoins, raised painted basecourse and margins; rubble sides. 2 gabled single storey linked projections to rear. All single windows, sash and case with 12-pane glazing. Moulded eaves cornice, slate roofs, rusticated end stacks. 2 canted piended dormers. Door in left gable return. Modern single storey flat-roofed extension to right. OUTBUILDING: to rear. 2-storey, gabled former stable. Painted rubble. Door in gable end towards hotel with hayloft door at 1st floor above. Small window under eaves on long left return; 3-widely spaced bays to right return with regular openings. Stack to far gable.”

Given the above reference to this being an “earlier 19th century” building, it is surmised that James Paton was given the rights to a portion of land by the Earl of Galloway (for whom he had then worked for around 20 years) and that he built the “house” at No. 1 High Street or Row. The fact that he was employing 4 to 5 joiners would indicate that he was running a successful business and therefore reasonably well off. Whether he built with the view of the building serving as an Inn or whether he was building for his large family (there were 13 of them)is not known.

The Earl of Galloway, from 1806 until his death in 1834 was the 8th Earl, George Stewart (1786- 1834).He was a British naval commander and, later, a politician. He had married Lady Jane Paget in April 1797. It is noted that James Paton named one of his sons George Stewart Paton and one of his daughters Jane Paget Paton. Additionally, when James and Helenora had a daughter born a month after George’s heir, Randolph Stewart married Lady Harriet Blanche Somerset in August 1833, she was named Blanche Somerset Paton.
