At Queen Street, Stranraer, on the 23d December Sarah Forsyth, youngest daughter of the late Mr John Forsyth - after a very lengthened illness, borne with Christian resignation. Deceased was very much respected, and her death is regretted by relatives and a large circle of friends. At Hillhead, Stranraer, on the 31st December, Miss Mary M'Kie, aged 64 years. At Clayton, Stranraer, on the 26th Dec., after a long illness, Margaret Wallace, wife of the late Captain Hugh M'Crea. At Knockibay, , on the 27th December, Jane, youngest daughter of Mr Drynan, farmer there. At Garliestown, on the 29th December, Captain William Hannah, after a lingering illness. At Hollybush House, , on the 23d ult., by the Rev. Archibald M'Ewen of the Episcopal Church, Mr James Carruthers, merchant, Liverpool, to Elizabeth, eldest daughter of Mr Benjamin Oney, clothier.

DEATHS

At Elm House, Stranraer, on 31st December last, Samuel Hannah, Esq., aged 82 years. He was born in the parish of . A portion of his early life was spent in the West Indies, where, by means of industry and good conduct, he earned a competency. For the last forty years, during which he resided in Stranraer, he was a useful and much respected member of the community. Strictly honest and honourable in all his transactions, punctual in the discharge of duty, and truly without guile, his loss will be much felt in Stranraer. At St. John Street, Stranraer, on the 5th inst., aged 82 years, Helen Whitehead, relict of Mr A. Black. At Ardrie, near South Cairn, parish of , on the 5th instant, Janet Galleard, aged 78 years. The deceased was youngest daughter of the late Andrew Galleard, tenant of Ardrie; and it is thought that with her the name Galleard has become extinct in this district. At Drumbuie, parish of , on the 4th inst., at the advanced age of 84 years, Mr Thomas M'Harg, sometime farmer in Dalnarroch - much respected. On the 24th ultimo, at Fagra Mill, Rerrick, near Kirkcudbright, after a brief illness, aged 52, Mrs Elizabeth Burnet, wife of Mr John Bennet, millwright and farmer. She was highly respected, and is much regretted by her family and numerous friends. At Rothesay, on Thursday morning, the 1st instant, Mrs Alexander MacLeod. Drowned at Irvine, on the evening of Thursday, 1st inst., James Dunsmore, a native of Garliestown, when going on board his vessel, the Margaret Gracie.

Here, at George Street, on the morning of the 1st February current, Mr William Thomson, of the Albion Hotel, aged 60 years. Kind, inoffensive, and upright in his general deportment - faithful and affectionate in the discharge of his various duties - and steadfast in his love to the house of God and the ordinances of religion - his memory will be long and fondly cherished by all who knew him. The deceased was a young lady of very superior talents and accomplishments, and of the most amiable dispositions; and is deeply regretted by a large circle of attached friends and acquaintances. At Stoneykirk Village, on the 2d instant, Mr John Gibson, mason, aged 49 years – much lamented by his family and friends. At Aries, parish of Kirkcolm, on the 5th instant, Ann McBryde, relict of the late Mr Gilbert Milroy, farmer in Dally, parish of Kirkcolm. The deceased through a long protracted widowhood (during which it was her lot to experience various vicissitudes of providence) always exhibited the most cheerful Christian resignation; and although having almost completed the 93d year of her age, retained her mental faculties unimpaired up to the last moment of her existence. At Wigtown on the 2d instant, Marion Hannah, youngest daughter of the late William Hannah, farmer in Kirvennie, and relict of the late W. Barclay, farmer in Cotland, aged 69 years. At Wigtown, on the 1st inst, Alexander Stewart, son of Mr John Clelland, superintendent of police, Wigtown, aged 21 years. At Wigtown, on the 5th instant, James Guthrie, mason. At Hampton Court Palace, on the 8th instant, Julia Cecile, third daughter of Lord Henry Gordon. LADY JANE DALRYMPLE HAMILTON died on the 7th inst, at Paris. She was the eldest daughter of the celebrated Admiral Lord Duncan and sister of the Earl of Camperdown. In her youth she was reckoned one of the most beautiful women of the day, and attracted much admiration on the remarkable occasion when, hanging on the arm of her veteran and gallant father, she appeared in the Royal procession which went to St. Paul's after the battle of Camperdown to give thanks for the great naval victories. She afterwards married Sir Hew Dalrymple Hamilton, of Bargeny and North Berwick, in Scotland. Their only child, and the heiress of the great Bargeny estates, was married to the Duke de Coigny, whose eldest daughter and heiress married Mr Dalrymple, the Lord Lieutenant of Wigtownshire and heir presumptive to the Earl of Stair, who married the sister of the deceased lady.

Here, at Glen Street, on the 26th ultimo, Isabella M'Douall, wife of Mr William Caven, cabinetmaker - she was much respected in life, and her death is deeply deplored by her family and friends. At Cruise, New Luce, on the 24th ultimo, Alexander Wallace, only child of Mr William M'Master, farmer there, aged one year - deeply regretted. In the Island of Cuba, on the 25th February last, while going on board the ship Colonel Maule of Liverpool, John M'Dowall, ship carpenter, youngest son of Mr John M'Dowall, High Street, Stranraer. The night being dark, deceased missed his footing, and fell into the sea, and was drowned. His death is much lamented by his parents, friends, and acquaintance. At Falkland House, Ayr, on the 10th current William Angus, only son of William Hunter, LL.D. Rector of Ayr Academy. At Inverary, on the 30th April, Mr Lauchlin M'Lean, Sheriff Clerk, Tobermory, much and justly regretted. Suddenly, after a week's illness, of dysentery, on board the Eagle, on her passage to Australia with her family, on the 14th November, 1851, Mrs Mary Gardiner, relict of the late John Gardiner, sen., of Bennan, Kells. At Brooklyn, New York, on the 1st ultimo, aged 145, Mrs Elizabeth Fitzpatrick. The venerable deceased was a native of Scotland, and had led to the altar no less than eight members of the male sex - four in Scotland, and four in America. Thirty children survive her.

On the 22d ultimo, at Elderslie Cottage, near Gatehouse, aged 74 years, Alexander Mackenzie Shaw, Esq., late Captain in the 92d Regiment of Foot. He served during a part of the war in the Peninsula; was with the army during the memorable retreat of Sir John Moore, and at the battle of Corunna, in Spain, on the 16th January, 1809; was close by the gallant commander when he received his death wound, and saw him laid in the grave. It is also worthy of remark, that the deceased was one of the officers on duty when the mortal remains of the renowned Neilson, the hero of Trafalgar, &c., were deposited among the mighty dead in St. Paul's.

George Addison, in the 37th year of his age, and 9th of his ministry. On the 3d instant, in the 86th year of his age, the Right Hon. Sir Edward Thornton, G.C.B., many years Envoy Extraordinary and Minister Plenipotentiary to the Courts of Stockholm, Rio, and Lisbon, &c. On Saturday last, after a brief but severe illness, at Redfield, in the parish of Twynholm, Mr William Jolly, aged 52 years. He was well known throughout the Stewartry and Wigtownshire, as an extensive cattle dealer, and was much respected. His untimely removal has left a blank which cannot be easily filled up. A widow, one son, three daughters, and a widowed mother mourn the irreparable loss they have sustained. At Glenlochar Bridge, Balmaghie, on the 6th current, Mr Henry Carson, joiner, aged 56 years, who for many years filled the office of Librarian to the Balmaghie Library - deeply regretted by a large connection of friends and acquaintances.

We have to record the death of the Venerable the Archdeacon of Bath, which melancholy event occurred at the Rectory of Charlton in Somerset on Thursday afternoon. We regret to announce the demise of the Earl of Falmouth, who expired on Sunday morning at his residence in St. James’s Square, after a painful illness of more than six months duration. The late peer was for a short time in the House of Commons, being returned from the eastern division of the county of Cornwall in July 1841: but his father dying in December the same year, he succeeded to the earldom. He is succeeded as Viscount Falmouth by his uncle, the Hon. and Rev. John Evelyn Bonscawen, Prebendary of Canterbury, who will inherit the large family estates in Cornwall. The deceased peer was 41 years of age. Suddenly at his house in the Lower Hall, Hammersmith, on the 26th ult., Mr Allen, the celebrated landscape painter in the 49th year of his age.

The deceased, who was chief officer on board the ship Raphael of Liverpool, was a young man of promising abilities, and is sincerely lamented as a dutiful son and affectionate brother, and his memory will long be held dear by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. At Stoneykirk, on the 9th instant, after a lingering illness, borne with Christian resignation and fortitude, Mr Thomas Hunter, postmaster, in the 70th year of his age. Deceased combined a liberal education with extensive information and a highly cultivated mind, which rendered his society very entertaining; while his amiable manners and examplary [sic] conduct rendered him agreeable to all who had the pleasure of his acquaintance. Andrew Scott. At Stroul, Roseneath, on the 11th instant, Mary Cumming, wife of the late Archibald Niven, ferryman, aged 101 years. At Passage, Waterford, on the 14th ult., Johanna Walsh, in the 105th year of her age. Previous to her death she had been only one week confined to bed. She was a tall venerable-looking woman, and retained her mental faculties till within a few days of her decease. She has left a daughter who is at present upwards of 80 years of age.
