For many years it had been felt that there was a need for a Society in Scotland primarily devoted to the study of the History of Medicine and its allied Sciences. Such a Society came into being on 23rd April 1948, when a well attended and representative gathering of medical men and other interested persons from all over Scotland met in the Hall of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. It was then agreed to constitute the Society and to call it "The Scottish Society of the History of Medicine." A Constitution was drawn up and Office-Bearers for the ensuing year were elected. From this beginning the Society has grown steadily and now has a membership of some hundred persons. Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society (founded 1862) Merkland Kirkmahoe Dumfries DG1 1SY 12-03-2017 The Truckell Prize In 2009, the Dumfriesshire and Galloway Natural History and Antiquarian Society established The Truckell Prize, commemorating the late A.E. Truckell and his outstanding contribution to local studies in Dumfries and Galloway. The prize was open to undergraduate or postgraduate students from the Crichton Campus, Dumfries for a research paper on a human or natural history topic relating to the geographical area covered by the three former counties of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire. In its first five years the prize has been awarded on two occasions. The Society has now revised the terms of the prize as follows: The prize is open to all-comers, (with the exception of previous winners of the prize) for an original, unpublished (and not submitted for consideration for publication elsewhere) research paper on a human or natural history topic relating to the geographical area covered by the three former counties of Dumfriesshire, Kirkcudbrightshire and Wigtownshire. Entries, or earlier versions, which have been openly published in conventional print or on-line (in e-journals, blogs, etc.) will not be considered. Entries from researchers at an early stage in their careers are encouraged. Entries must meet the editorial standard required by these Transactions to qualify. The current Notes for Contributors are available on the Society’s website: www.dgnhas.org.uk. The winning paper must be made available for publication as an article in these Transactions. Copyright in the published paper will be held by the Society, and any other further publication of the paper must be approved by the Society. -

THE DEMOGRAPHY OF SCOTLAND AND THE IMPLICATIONS FOR DEVOLUTION — EVIDENCE FROM POPULATION MATTERSi Key Points • Scotland’s population is growing, but more slowly and ageing more quickly than the remainder of the United Kingdom. • Scotland has lower fertility than the remainder of the United Kingdom. • Both the United Kingdom and Scottish populations are consuming ecological resources at an unsustainable rate. • The focus should be on managing the transition to a sustainable, stable population with a different demographic profile, not on trying artificially to maintain an existing demographic profile. • Responses to demographic change require long-term policies and plans. • Population must be given more attention in government through the appointment of senior ministers who have responsibility for this across departments. • Policies to encourage more efficient use of the existing labour pool and to reduce unintended pregnancies should be introduced. • The Scottish Government has significant policy levers; however, the devolving of powers over employment should be considered because of the differing nature of the demographic challenges in Scotland and the remainder of the United Kingdom. Reasons for Revision A first version of this evidence paper was submitted to the Scottish Affairs Committee in February 2016. Since this time, new population data for Scotland and the UK has become available, and the UK has voted in a national referendum to leave the European Union. In light of these recent developments, Population Matters has decided that it is appropriate that we revise our evidence report, including the most recent data, and the impact that the EU referendum result is likely to have on Scottish and UK demographics. -

Water Safety Policy in Scotland —A Guide 2 Introduction Scotland is surrounded by coastal water – the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the Atlantic Ocean. In addition, there are also numerous bodies of inland water including rivers, burns and about 25,000 lochs. Being safe around water should therefore be a key priority. However, the management of water safety is a major concern for Scotland. Recent research has found a mixed picture of water safety in Scotland with little uniformity or consistency across the country.1 In response to this research, it was suggested that a framework for a water safety policy be made available to local authorities. The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents (RoSPA) has therefore created this document to assist in the management of water safety. In order to support this document, RoSPA consulted with a number of UK local authorities and organisations to discuss policy and water safety management. Each council was asked questions around their own area’s priorities, objectives and policies. Any policy specific to water safety was then examined and analysed in order to help create a framework based on current practice. It is anticipated that this framework can be localised to each local authority in Scotland which will help provide a strategic and consistent national approach which takes account of geographical areas and issues. NATIONAL SAMPLE FROM THE 1851 CENSUS OF GREAT BRITAIN LIST OF SAMPLE CLUSTERS The listing is arranged in four columns, and is listed in cluster code order, but other orderings are available. The first column gives the county code; this code corresponds with the county code used in the standardised version of the data. An index of the county codes forms Appendix 1 The second column gives the cluster type. These cluster types correspond with the stratification parameter used in sampling and have been listed in Background Paper II. Their definitions are as follows: 11 English category I 'Communities' under 2,000 population 12 Scottish category I 'Communities' under 2,000 population 21 Category IIA and VI 'Towns' and Municipal Boroughs 26 Category IIB Parliamentary Boroughs 31 Category III 'Large non-urban communities' 41 Category IV Residual 'non-urban' areas 51 Category VII Unallocable 'urban' areas 91 Category IX Institutions The third column gives the cluster code numbers. This corresponds to the computing data set name, except that in the computing data set names the code number is preceded by the letters PAR (e.g. PAR0601). The fourth column gives the name of the cluster community. It should be noted that, with the exception of clusters coded 11,12 and 91, the cluster unit is the enumeration district and not the whole community. Clusters coded 11 and 12, however, correspond to total 'communities' (see Background Paper II). Clusters coded 91 comprise twenty successive individuals in every thousand, from a list of all inmates of institutions concatenated into a continuous sampling frame; except that 'families' are not broken, and where the twenty individuals come from more than one institution, each institution forms a separate cluster. -

Former Fellows of The Royal Society of Edinburgh 1783 – 2002 Biographical Index Part Two ISBN 0 902198 84 X Published July 2006 © The Royal Society of Edinburgh 22-26 George Street, Edinburgh, EH2 2PQ BIOGRAPHICAL INDEX OF FORMER FELLOWS OF THE ROYAL SOCIETY OF EDINBURGH 1783 – 2002 PART II K-Z C D Waterston and A Macmillan Shearer This is a print-out of the biographical index of over 4000 former Fellows of the Royal Society of Edinburgh as held on the Society’s computer system in October 2005. It lists former Fellows from the foundation of the Society in 1783 to October 2002. Most are deceased Fellows up to and including the list given in the RSE Directory 2003 (Session 2002-3) but some former Fellows who left the Society by resignation or were removed from the roll are still living. HISTORY OF THE PROJECT Information on the Fellowship has been kept by the Society in many ways – unpublished sources include Council and Committee Minutes, Card Indices, and correspondence; published sources such as Transactions, Proceedings, Year Books, Billets, Candidates Lists, etc. All have been examined by the compilers, who have found the Minutes, particularly Committee Minutes, to be of variable quality, and it is to be regretted that the Society’s holdings of published billets and candidates lists are incomplete. The late Professor Neil Campbell prepared from these sources a loose-leaf list of some 1500 Ordinary Fellows elected during the Society’s first hundred years. He listed name and forenames, title where applicable and national honours, profession or discipline, position held, some information on membership of the other societies, dates of birth, election to the Society and death or resignation from the Society and reference to a printed biography.
