Dunscore Primary 55 Kirkconnel and Kelloholm Situated on the A76, these villages contain a number of facilities Kelloholm Primary 182 including Primary School, Customer Service Centre, Health Centre and Social Work Office, Activity Moniaive Primary 56 and Resource Centre, Kirkconnel Resource Base, Penpont Primary 51 Hillview Leisure Centre as well as a number of shops. One of the region’s largest employers, Sanquhar Primary 170 Brown’s Food Group, is situated here and employs Wallace Hall Primary 164 over 500 members of staff. Kirkconnel and Kelloholm is an ex-mining area. The population in Secondary Schools 2011 was 2590 Sanquhar Academy 247 Sanquhar is a former Royal Burgh which is also Wallace Hall Academy 554 situated on the A76. The town has a number of facilities including Primary School, Secondary School, Swimming Pool, Town Hall, Customer Service Centre, Health Centre, Police and Fire Customer Services Centres Stations and a Community Centre. All of the shops Kelloholm Customer Service Centre are located on the High Street. The population of Sanquhar Customer Service Centre Sanquhar is 2370 Thornhill Customer Service Centre Thornhill is a village located also on the A76. It has grown over the years into a village with a Burial Grounds population of 1,790. Thornhill is the largest village Closeburn Burial Ground in the Mid Nithsdale area and is a local service Closeburn Churchyard centre with many residents from nearby smaller villages and hamlets making use of the facilities Dalgarnock, Kirkbog (closed) and amenities on offer in the village. Thornhill Durisdeer Burial Ground is home to a range of busy shops most of these Durisdeer Churchyard independent. Thornhill has a number of facilities Dunscore Burial Ground including Customer Service Centre, Wallace Hall Glencairn Churchyard Academy and Wallace Hall Primary School, Police Station and Fire Station. Greenhead, Thornhill (closed) Keir Burial Ground Penpont is a small village that lies around 2 miles Old Keir Burial Ground (closed) to the west of Thornhill on the A702 and contains a number of facilities including a primary school, Kirkbride Burial Ground, Durisdeer post office and village hall, the population of Kirkconnel Cemetery Penpont is around 500 Kirkholm Cemetery Moniaive is a small village which lies just over 8 Kirkland Burial Ground, near Moniaive (closed) miles from Thornhill on the A702 and has a range Morton Burial Ground of facilities including a primary school, post office, Penpont Churchyard community hall and playcare facility. Moniaive Sanquhar Churchyard is a popular visitor and tourist attraction. The population of the village itself is just over 500. St Conal’s Churchyard Old St Conal’s Churchyard (closed) Tynron Churchyard Wanlockhead Burial Ground Old Wanlockhead Churchyard (closed) Parks and Open Spaces Key Council Projects Closeburn Upper Nithsdale Enterprise Centre Gladstone Park, Penpont The requirement for an Upper Nithsdale Enterprise Macarra Park, Moniaive Centre was identified through a Charrette – an Keir Mill intensive community consultation that combined Blackmyre stakeholder engagement and economic appraisal Thornhill Community Centre – and was undertaken by our Council in Upper Nithsdale between May and September 2015, Muirhall Road and then confirmed in the Upper Nithsdale Carronbridge Regeneration Plan, approved by the Economy, Durisdeer Mill Environment and Infrastructure Committee in Renwick Place January 2016. A sum of £400,000 was allocated Bell Crescent from the Economic Development Capital Programme to support this project. Queensberry Square Lorimer Park The Centre will be shaped and built around Hyslop Street services targeted at developing and strengthening Scott Street enterprise and job skills within the communities Kirkland Drive of Upper Nithsdale. The Charrette recommended that the Centre should be located in a community St Conals Square setting – preferably Kelloholm. Bowman Edgar Wanlockhead The concept for the Centre is being developed through a Business Case process. The purpose of a Business Case is to ensure that no activity is taken NHS Facilities forward without considering the options available Thornhill Community Hospital for achieving the objectives, and also to ensure that the adopted approach represents the best Building Healthy Communities - Kelloholm value use of (scarce) public resources. A key challenge will be the identification of a lead Sanquhar Fire Station tenant for the Centre, and options for this and Thornhill Fire Station for a potential operating model will be also be suggested. Community Councils and Community Associations Carronbridge Community Council - Established Improve Public Spaces/Gateway Signage Closeburn Community Council - Established Dumfries and Galloway Council have a strategy to create / improve public spaces and gateway Dunscore Community Council - Established signage throughout the district for the benefit of Durisder Community Council - Disestablished residents, to celebrate the heritage and raise the Glencairn Community Council - Established profile of the individual towns and villages and, Keir Community Council - Established where applicable, boost the visitor economy. To Kirkconnel/Kelloholm Community Council - support the regeneration programme for Upper Established Nithsdale the 3 projects listed below were allocated funding from the Economic Development Capital Penpont Community Council - Established Programme in January 2016. The procurement Sanquhar Community Council - Established process resulted in the appointment of the Thornhill Community Council - Established Architects Smith Scott Mullan to act as the Design Tynron Community Council - Established Team for both the Public Realm and Gateway projects. Wanlockhead Community Council - Disestablished Community Resilience Groups • Upper Nithsdale Town Welcome (£220,000): To deliver three town/village ‘gateway’ projects Sanquhar in Wanlockhead, Sanquhar and Kirkconnel & Glencairn Kelloholm Carronbridge • Sanquhar Public Realm Project (£80,000): To Kirkconnel and Kelloholm bring forward costed design proposals (to Dunscore concept design) to enable further capital Wanlockhead funding and grant applications to be made. Tynron • Kirkconnel Public Realm Project (£50,000): To bring forward costed design proposals Community Asset Transfers (to concept design) to enable further capital Kirkconnel Miners Memorial Centre - August 2017 funding and grant applications to be made.
