Enjoy! CYCLING IN STEWARTRY This booklet is one of a series of four covering the whole of Dumfries & Galloway that suggest a variety of cycle tours for visitors and locals of all abilities. Local cycling enthusiasts, using their knowledge of the quieter roads, cycle routes and byways, have researched the routes to provide an interesting and rewarding taste of the region. A note of distance, time, terrain and facilities is given at the start of each route. All start points offer parking, toilets, snack places and accommodation. Some routes include stretches off-tarmac and this is indicated at the start of the route. Parking discs are required for some car parks and these are available at Tourist Information Centres and in local shops. Stewartry is part of the old province of Galloway. In those centuries when the easiest way to travel any distance was by sea, it held a strategic place on the west coast, Irish and Isle of Man routes. This explains the many archaeological remains near the coast.

In 1801, at a meeting of the Edinburgh Aberdeenshire Club, Sir William Forbes expressed a need for a survey and map of Aberdeen and Banff to assist in the development of improvements such as roads and bridges in the counties. This idea was given unanimous support and a committee was set up to bring the proposal under the consideration of the county gentlemen (AC9/8/1/5). On 11 October 1806 printed proposals for publishing a map by subscription from a survey by John Ainslie were sent to potential subscribers (AC9/8/1/14). This attempt appears to have been unsuccessful and on 10 August 1809 James Robertson, land surveyor, wrote to Sir William Forbes informing him that he would soon be completing the fieldwork for his survey and map of Northumberland and would be available to survey and map Aberdeenshire and Banffshire, as requested by Sir William Forbes three years earlier on seeing Robertson's topographical survey and map of Jamaica (AC9/8/1/15). Sir William Forbes duly informed the Commissioners of Supply of Aberdeenshire who decided to investigate this proposal further as Alexander Sutherland, land surveyor, whom they had employed to undertake the task had left the country (AC9/8/1/16).

  • BCS Paper 2016/28 2018 Review of UK Parliament Constituencies Appendix a Midlothian and Scottish Borders Council Areas Existing Constituencies
Boundary Commission for Scotland BCS Paper 2016/28 2018 Review of UK Parliament Constituencies Constituency considerations for Midlothian and Scottish Borders council areas Action required 1. The Commission is invited to consider alternative designs of constituencies for Midlothian and Scottish Borders council areas in furtherance of its 2018 Review of UK Parliament constituencies. Background 2. On 24 February 2016, the Commission began its 2018 Review of UK Parliament constituencies with a view to making its recommendations by October 2018 in tandem with the other UK parliamentary boundary commissions. 3. The review is being undertaken in compliance with the Parliamentary Constituencies Act 1986, as amended. The Act stipulates a UK electoral quota of 74,769.2 electors and use of the parliamentary electorate figures from the December 2015 Electoral Register. The 5% electorate limits in the Act correspond to an electorate of no less than 71,031 and no more than 78,507. 4. The Act requires the Commission to recommend the name, extent and designation of constituencies in Scotland, of which there are to be 53 in total. 2 Scottish constituencies are prescribed in the Act: Orkney and Shetland Islands constituency and Western isles constituency. 5. The Act provides some discretion in the extent of the Commission’s regard to the size, shape and accessibility of constituencies, existing constituencies and the breaking of local ties. As this review is considered to be the first following enactment of the legislation (the 6th Review was ended before completion in 2013 following enactment of the Electoral Registration and Administration Act 2013) the Commission need not have regard to the inconveniences attendant on changes to constituencies.
