I am pleased to be able to tell you that from June 2009 we shall have colour on our cover . The front cover will be kept for village events (first come first served) so make your poster colourful and with impact to make the most of this position . Advertisers are being offered a full page, one-off colour advert on the back cover, thus making a financial contribution to the increased cost of printing . I hope that you will be pleased with this new venture which we will trial until September . Hopefully it will then become permanent if it has your approval . The certificate which we were awarded has been framed and will hang in the village hall for you all to see . There is a lot happening in the village in May so make sure you have the dates in your diary . You will have noticed that I have included the occasional poem and short story in the magazine, If you would like to make a contribution of this nature, please do .

6 We are aiming to have our second annual St Mary’s Spring Walk on May 9th. It will be a manageable stroll, followed by a pub lunch. Please contact Mike or Matt for details if you’d like to join in.

Children are very much part of our church family at St Mary’s. At the 9.30am service we have a welcoming group, called ‘Xplorers’, for children which meets in the church. Last Sunday Special happens at 3.30 in the afternoon of the last Sunday of each month. It is especially geared towards families and children, and the 9.30am service that Sunday is usually quieter, with more space for prayer. We hope to start work on our new children’s building during the month of May.

Illumin8 is our youth service for young people in the area. We are also starting Illumin8 Café on the third Sunday evening of each month – Contact Rev Matt Watts for more details.

She had an opportunity to talk to members about the committee and the Code of Conduct following the meeting . Village parking problems Several residents expressed conflicting views on parking solutions for Hillfield Road which included installing grasscrete on the grassed areas to installing reflective posts. 12 attending emergency call outs . He can be contacted on 01223 262089 . Dogs The Parish Council would like to thank responsible dog owners for clearing up after their dogs and for keeping them under control when out for a walk . Unfortunately not everyone is doing so and the amount of dog fouling in the village and on the recreation ground has increased . The Parish Council urges all dog owners to clean up after their dog and use the dog bins on the recreation ground and also throughout the village . If your children walk your pet please give them some bags and educate them to bag the droppings and to use the dog bins . Thank you . A resident has written as follows: Grandad what’s that? I am not yet 2 years old and like to go for a walk with my Grandad . When I meet a dog I want to touch them, but if they are not on a lead I am frightened because their heads are above mine and have big teeth . Also when I am in my pushchair with my sister ,dogs come up and I am scared because they are so big , above my sisters head . The owners say “It’s all right they won’t hurt” but they look very big and fierce to me. When I get to the recreation ground I like to run around and pick things up and because we are very little we put things in our mouth . My Grandad says don’t touch but we are very quick and my Grandad very slow . Sometimes people leave little parcels hanging on bushes, I want to play with these but my Grandad says NO !!! He says the people should put these bags in the bin . My daddy plays football on the recreation ground and he gets very cross with the little piles of poo on the football pitch, it does smell horrid, makes his legs dirty . Please pick up your dog poo and take it to a red bin . S137 Donation requests for financial support from village groups and organisations In autumn each year the Parish Council invites village groups and organisations to submit a bid for financial support. At this meeting those bids were considered and in accordance with its powers under Section 137 of the Local Government Act, 1972, the Parish Council approved donations to Village Help Scheme £1500, St Mary’s Church £750, Comberton Scouts £300, CCC Reading Scheme £40 all of which are in the opinion of the Council, in the interests of the area and its inhabitants . A bid from Comberton Crusaders will be considered further at the next meeting when additional information is received . Tree work in Long Road An order has been placed to remove two diseased horse chestnuts in Long Road and the rest of the trees will be trimmed . Affordable Housing It was agreed to hold a public meeting to discuss two new potential sites i .e . north of 82 Green End and adjacent to The Drift which the South Cambs Planning Officer had indicated may be suitable as exception sites . News from The Meridian Primary School

Opportunity - Creativity - Challenge Excellence for All We’ve just finished the term with a ‘Non-uniform and Wacky Hair’ day. Great commitment to wackiness was shown by all (including some of the staff!) . There was dyed hair, backcombed hair, a variety of bunches, plaits and ponytails, wigs, and any number of hair clips and slides . In addition to the enjoyment this gave us all, lots of money was raised to help boost PTA funds which will, in turn, support stimulating trips out for the children . Speaking of which, our Year 5 children are in a state of high excitement at the moment as, straight after the Easter break, they go on their residential visit for five days . They stay at Hilltop, which is an outdoor centre in Norfolk, where they take part 15 16 in a wide range of activities including an assault course, archery and rock-pooling . Of course, the social skills and personal independence which are fostered by such trips are no less important . But, for the children, it’s all just enormous fun! Meanwhile the Year 6 children will be looking forward (if that’s the right phrase…) to their SATs tests in May . Like many primary schools we are very disappointed that the government saw fit to abandon the KS3 tests for 14 year olds, but not those for children who are only 10 or 11 years old . However, we are hoping that before too long, the teacher assessment which we carry out all the time will be given the status it deserves . Since the SATs results generally just tell us what we knew already, that would seem the sensible way to go . Our Eco-Action Team led the school in an interesting project on the day that British Summertime began . We had heard about an initiative called Earth Hour . This is a global event organised by the World Wildlife Fund and involves people in turning off their lights for a specific hour that evening to give a strong message about their concerns regarding climate change . Our Eco-Action Team, not content with encouraging children and parents to take part, wrote to Heart Radio about it . As a result, two of the older members of the Team were interviewed and their comments broadcast on the news bulletins that day . Perhaps you heard them? We were very proud . Next term we will be applying for our Bronze Eco-Schools Award and my belief is that the children certainly deserve it . Glennis Virgo, Headteacher COMBERTON VILLAGE COLLEGE: A NOTE FROM THE PRINCIPAL What is true education? Rather a large question requiring more than just a brief column from a local educationalist might be a fair response! For sure, it goes far beyond the acquisition of significant qualifications (although a formal education in our society is reasonably bound to involve gaining meaningful qualifications). It will certainly involve the development of the individual, a proper preparation for later life, an appreciation of the world in which we live, an ability to live with and work with others and other things as well . Perhaps real education has something involved in it that could be described as ‘transformational’ . This is a phrase perhaps too easily and, potentially, glibly used . However, powerful education perhaps has the power to affect and to change lives . This begs a question about what might ever achieve that . I was reminded recently about the sort of thing that can . I was fortunate to spend a further week in Mozambique before Easter (a similar visit had taken place two years ago) to look at establishing further school links for several Cambridgeshire schools as well as strengthening Comberton Village College’s pre-existing link with a large secondary school in Maputo . It was a really good week with much possibility for further work and possible exchanges for students and staff from Cambridgeshire in the future . We already have a visit planned for six students and two staff this July, following one last July (in addition to the long- standing similar visit to our partner school near Pretoria in South Africa) . Why do this? It is a lot of effort to make such links and visits possible . It does not give a formal qualification to any student or count for anything in an Ofsted inspection. The

18 answer is, I believe, obvious and simple: it is true education that has the power to be transformational . Probably every student from this country involved in such a visit is strongly affected in a way that impacts upon their outlook on life . Visiting schools with 100 children in a class, no equipment at all (including desks, hence they sit on the floor) but with a joy for education and life puts virtually everything in perspective . Recognising that turning on a tap and being able not only to get water but to drink it is a wonderful thing not even dreamt of by very many in our world is something that affects young people’s lives . Knowing that many students walk more than 10 kilometres every day to get to school for a 7 .30 a .m . start is salutary . I vividly remember asking one student from this country who had been on such a visit how his studies were now going on his return . He had not been the most diligent of students before the visit . His slightly embarrassed reply was that he was now, for the first time, working hard to try to do as well as he could ‘because how could I do anything else now that I have seen and got to know others who have nothing but do not complain and try to do as well as they can’ . He made a fair point . Many such students go back later to work in the schools, orphanages and other settings they have visited . For all of them, they would say that these experiences have been the most powerful, and positive, educational experience they received in their school years . Stephen Munday

Comberton WI Report In April the Comberton WI hosted a WI group meeting for eight local WI’s . The talk was entitled ‘She Also Wrote Music’ and was presented by Rex Walford who accompanied the singer, Gabrielle Bell . We learnt about the many female librettists, musicians and songwriters behind some famous tunes and we enjoyed an excellent performance by Gabrielle and Rex . Our April speaker was Gundel Haxton who spoke about the history of pearls . Gundel had been introduced to pearls in Hong Kong . She told members how pearls are ‘cultured’ and showed us examples of the many different shapes, sizes and colours of pearls . Gundel buys pearls and makes her own jewellry and members were able to buy them after the talk . Dates for Diary: Tuesday May 12th at 7 .45p .m in the Village Hall ‘Resolutions’ . Wednesday May 20th at 10 .30a .m . Coffee Mornng at 60 West Street .

Comberton Friendship Cub Our meeting held on Thursday April 9th was a slide show and commentary by Andrew Norton on his drive along ‘Route 66’ in America . The drive of 2,450 miles from Chicago to California, took thirteen days in a Pontiac car . This was in aid of Motor Neurone Disease, a grand amount of £8,500 was raised for this medical condition .

22 LAWN CARE IN SPRING The lawn at this time of year will start to look its best if cared for correctly . It can also look its worst if not . Fertiliser When choosing fertiliser ensure that you are putting on what the grass needs which is predominately Nitrogen in a slow release form, but it may also need Phosphate and Potassium as well as vital trace elements . Weed Control It is essential to get the weeds actively growing before applying a selective herbicide either as a spray or admixed with the fertiliser . Spraying is by far more effective and longer lasting . Mowing Regular mowing (little and often) will bring out the best in your lawn . Don’t cut shorter than ¾ inch . Mower blade should have been replaced or sharpened .

Actions required in Spring • Feed lawn with Nitrogen slow release fertiliser • Spray lawn with selective herbicide (only if warm enough) • Mow lawn regularly and lightly . Don’t cut shorter than ¾ inches (2 cm) this month . Grass will respond better if cut little and often . Some of the above tasks can be carried out by the lawn owner, other tasks may need some professional intervention . For more information about lawn care and the services that ProLawnCare Ltd offer call Ph:Office 01480 812393 e-mail-info@prolawncare .co .uk Or visit our web site at www .prolawncare .co .uk “… .for that Lawn you’ve longed for” Lawn Fact: “lawn grass helps purify water which is entering underground aquifers . The root mass and soil microbes act as a filter to capture and break down many types of pollutants”

Colour Painting with Plants Beautifully designed gardens are a delight . Personally, I am not so keen on tight designs that restrict colour . White gardens, like Sissinghurst Castle, would not be my favourite; for me they are rather like black and white photographs which can sometimes come across as static and lifeless . So-called green gardens, much lauded by commentators, leave me feeling ‘what’s the point?’ Yet there is a point that these gardens make, and with a little tweaking they can be used to great advantage in a garden during the year . Monotone gardens provide a connecting colour theme that can be exploited by adding other colours . The seasons create an atmosphere that can be captured by certain moods in colour and planting, for example autumn has a preponderance of reds and gold . The whole joy of flowers is the startling colour range available. If we consider garden design as painting in time and space, then we can learn from the great painters, particularly modernists, who rejoice in colour contrasts and colour complements; contrasts shock,

24 complements soothe . Effective gardens combine these emotions . We need both effects in a garden, otherwise we feel emotionally impoverished . Good garden designers, like painters, make use of a colour wheel in planning the colour effects through the seasons . The colour wheel is a circle divided into sectors that represent the colour spectrum ranging from red shades through to violet . Furthermore, the circle is divided into two to assess the association of colours with warmth or cold; orange-red is the warmest and light-dark blue represent cool colours . Opposite sectors of the colour wheel provide the contrasting colours; complementary colours are warm or cool but not directly contrasting . The great value of this approach is in planting associations, namely, what colour should I put next to another? The design trick is to get the plants to be in flower at the same time and to provide a succession of colour throughout as much of the year as possible . White flowers go well with pastel shades of blue and pink. A superb example would be a trellis with white and pink climbing roses together with a pale-blue clematis to separate them . Once the plants are mature they hang like a tapestry . Spring hot colours could be provided with a bed of yellow wall flowers inter-planted with scarlet tulips. My preference in autumn is to try to cool down the golds using blue and purple Michaelmas daisies and the small shrubs like Ceratostigma plumbaginoides and Caryopteris clandonensis with clear blue flowers. Good background colouring can be provided with shrubs or small trees with different contrasting shades, ranging from deep purple through bright green to yellow and silver-blue leaf colours . As a general rule these contrasts work best with lighter leaf colours at the front . R .T . Choke

KVEZC (continued from last month) He awoke the next morning, momentarily forgetting his change of surroundings of the previous day . For an instant or two he experienced a feeling of apprehension as he realised that the claustrophobic green and brown confusion he had always known no longer hid him from the gaze of ‘someone’ who might be watching him . A very natural pang of hunger though soon brought Kvezc’s mind back to more immediate needs and he set off towards the shapes which quite honestly seemed no closer than they were the previous day . Two hours, a number of vibrations, shadows and loud noises later Kvezc was still feeling hungry. The flat black something beneath him was easier to travel on but could, by no stretch of the imagination, be regarded as store house of food . Kvezc was almost on the verge of wishing that he was back in his old familiar surroundings when suddenly on the edge of his vision he saw a small shape moving towards him. He felt transfixed as whatever it was moved slowly nearer. This could be the reason for him being what and where he was he thought, an answer to all of his questions, a meaning to his existence . After what seemed an age the object came up close to him and stopped two or three inches away. Kvezc stared in fascination. If there had ever been a case of love at first sight this was it. Despite the fact that the newcomer was no more than a sort of jellified spiky blob half enclosed in a strange yellow and black lump, Kvezc thought it incredibly beautiful . If only he could persuade the newcomer to return with him to his green and brown ‘somewhere’ . Not that she knew it but Fykkli was also of the family Aovvix and like Kvezc had never seen another moving object in her life. The jellified spiky blob half enclosed in a strange yellow and black lump that sat watching her looked a trifle unlovable but when a girl is on her own she can’t afford to be too choosy . Kvezc decided to have a better look at this vision of loveliness and moving as casually as he could he circled Fykkli, twice . He decided that this was his life companion, from every angle . Almost in a dream Kvezv began to circle Fykkli again and again . Fykkli decided to enter into the spirit of the thing and to join Kvezv in his slow motion dance . As they followed the same circular route Kvezc was in ecstasy, the eighteen days of nothing had been worthwhile if only to prepare him for the dizzy pleasure of this meeting . ‘I love my creator’ he sang to himself quietly as he stared across at Fykkli as she glided in unison with him . The now familiar rising vibration meant nothing to Kvezc, it came, it went, who cared . As always the noise at its peak was accompanied by a temporary loss of light but on this occasion a different sound added its voice . A sharp crack which hardly registered in Kvezc’s mind as he dreamt of gliding up, down and between the stalks of his home ground . The vibrations faded, the light returned and Kvezc threw another darting, blushing glance to where only a moment ago Fykkli had been . To his horror however she was not there, at least not as she had been a second or two ago. All that remained was a flattened mixture of grey jelly with tiny fragments of the yellow and black lump dotted amongst it . 27

28 The pain of his loss shrieked through Kvezc’s head . He stared wildly around him . As usual no sign of life, no-one to explain what had happened . If this was another of the creators cruel jokes there would certainly be no opportunity for a repeat . Kvezc was no longer interested in Why? or What?, he decided there and then that he did not wish to be a character in the creator’s game . He never did see the green and brown something again . He made no attempt to return to his old haunts, or to search for food or to try to reach the ‘shapes’ which of course the creator must have moved because Kvezc still couldn’t see them clearly . He just sat and sat, staring at the shapeless mass in front of him . Kvezc of the family Aovvix died on that very spot four days later . Lack of food, or something, finally bringing to an end the gift of life which Kvezc was convinced was given only to amuse an unseen watcher . The wind, rain and sun played out the final chapter during the next five days by removing all trace of the existence of Kvezc and Fykkli from the spot . All that remained was the smooth black pavement, the occasional pedestrian and the row of neat detached houses across the road with the hum of passing traffic filling the air. Young Enterprise

The Young Enterprise competition has now been running since mid-February and all businesses are going well . There have been stalls at break and lunchtime in the foyer at CVC for the students, and many companies are showing significant profits. Some teams are also selling outside school time, after school in other primary’s, or to friends and family . The companies are selling a wide range of products, including T-shirts, photos, crafts, and flapjacks, and services like cleaning, car-washing, and events organising. The selling seems to be going smoothly, but after the Easter break the companies will have to step up the pace a bit to try and get the most profit and beat the other teams before the competition ends just before the May half term break. At first, the competition was going to run until mid-June, but now with less time to build up the profits, the teams are going to have to work extra hard . During the competition there have been other tasks for the teams to complete . One of these tasks has been to set and carry out personal targets . The targets had to be checked over during a meeting with a teacher before we could start them . Some of the targets included delivering orders, or finding new ways to advertise the companies. So far everyone’s personal targets are progressing well, and soon we will be having another meeting to see how well everyone has done . One of the companies that has been holding regular stalls is Your Name Here, which is the company I am a part of . Originally we were selling solely personalised craft items, but we have now widened our product range and we will be introducing loads of new fun products to our stall . After the holidays we will be selling again in the Meridian Primary School playground to the parents every Tuesday, so bring along some money when you come to collect your child and take a look at our stall! On the 9th of May there is a table top sale being held at Meridian Primary School from 10am until 2pm . You may have seen posters advertising the sale, as they are dotted around the village and Cambridge . Your Name Here will be selling at this table top sale, 29 COLIN AND LINDSAY BOURNE Welcome you to THE THREE HORSESHOES South Street, Comberton Tel: (01223) 262252

You are invited to join us in a new lunchtime venture:

The Cambridge Dining Club

Selected Mondays 12 noon – 2:30 pm

The Dining Club will meet five times a year at the beautiful riverside restaurant, La Mimosa, in Cambridge.

Annual membership is £25 per person. This club is modelled on the successful NSPCC dining club in Ely.

The cost of the lunch will be £15 per person to include a main course, a dessert and coffee. It is planned to have a guest speaker on a variety of current topics at each lunch.

We hope that you will support this wonderful new venture and help to raise much needed funds for the NSPCC in our area.

For more details Kate Armstrong [email protected] 01954 719745 please contact: Karen Gunner [email protected] 01462 742259

How does this venture raise money for charity? Initially members pay £25 each to ‘join the club’. 100 members would give £2500 up front. Members pay £15 each per meal, the restaurant sponsors the meal and only charges £10 per head, thus raising £5 per person. There are 5 lunches a year. Speakers are offered expenses only, but most decline. There are no administration costs as all are volunteers. Funds raised are used for projects within Cambridgeshire, to help children and teenagers at risk, to help fund schools information packs and to fund operators at Childline.
