RESOLUTION

A RESOLUTION DECLARING MAY 2021 AS ASIAN AMERICAN AND HERITAGE MONTH IN THE CITY.

WHEREAS, Asian Annerican and Pacific Islander Heritage Month originated in a congressional bill in June of 1977. On March 28, 1979, President Carter issued Presidential Proclamation 4650, proclaiming the week beginning on May 4, 1979, as Asian/Pacific American Heritage Week. In 1992, Congress passed P.l. 102-450, which permanently designated May as “Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month”, and in 2009, Asian/Pacific American Heritage Month was officially changed to Asian American and Pacific Islander Month; and

WHEREAS, Asian American and Pacific Islander community members have been disproportionately impacted by incidences of hate and discrimination during the COVID- 19 pandemic, and in turn, disproportionately impacting our Asian American and Pacific Islander youth; and

WHEREAS, Asian American and Pacific Islanders comprise many ethnicities and languages, and their many achievements embody the American experience, and by recognizing the contributions and accomplishments of Asian American and Pacific Islander men and women, we celebrate the importance of inclusion and building a brighter future; and

WHEREAS, the Federal Asian Pacific American Council (FAPAC) has announced this year’s theme as “Advancing Leaders Through Purpose-Driven Service,” which is the start of the new theme series for 2021-2024 highlighting FAPAC’s efforts in advancing leaders; and

WHEREAS, Asian American and Pacific Islander men and women are leaders in all aspects of American life: government and industry, science and medicine, the arts and Armed Forces, and education and sports; and

WHEREAS, the City of Thornton community has benefitted through the cultural richness, diversity, and generosity of its local Asian and Pacific Islanders.

NOW, THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CITY COUNCIL OF THE CITY OF THORNTON, , AS FOLLOWS:

That City Council declares May 2021 as Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month in the City and recognizes and Pacific Islanders contributions and celebrates their achievements and further calls upon the citizens of Thornton to learn more about the history of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and their many contributions to our nation and our local community.
