The Lessons All are seated

The Lesson ...... Genesis 21:8-21

The child grew, and was weaned; and Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned. But Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne to Abraham, playing with her son Isaac. So she said to Abraham, “Cast out this slave woman with her son; for the son of this slave woman shall not inherit along with my son Isaac.” The matter was very distressing to Abraham on account of his son. But God said to Abraham, “Do not be distressed because of the boy and because of your slave woman; whatever Sarah says to you, do as she tells you, for it is through Isaac that offspring shall be named for you. As for the son of the slave woman, I will make a nation of him also, because he is your offspring.” So Abraham rose early in the morning, and took bread and a skin of water, and gave it to Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, along with the child, and sent her away. And she departed, and wandered about in the wilderness of Beer-sheba. When the water in the skin was gone, she cast the child under one of the bushes. Then she went and sat down opposite him a good way off, about the distance of a bowshot; for she said, “Do not let me look on the death of the child.” And as she sat opposite him, she lifted up her voice and wept. And God heard the voice of the boy; and the angel of God called to Hagar from heaven, and said to her, “What troubles you, Hagar? Do not be afraid; for God has heard the voice of the boy where he is. Come, lift up the boy and hold him fast with your hand, for I will make a great nation of him.” Then God opened her eyes and she saw a well of water. She went, and filled the skin with water, and gave the boy a drink. God was with the

5 boy, and he grew up; he lived in the wilderness, and became an expert with the bow. He lived in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother got a wife for him from the land of Egypt.

The ...... Psalm 86: 1-5, 8-9

The introduces the first verse, followed by all. 1 Bow down your ear, O LORD, and answer /me, * for I am poor/ and in misery. 2 Keep watch over my life, for I am/ faith-ful; * save your servant who puts their/ trust in you. 3 Be merciful to me, O LORD, for you are my/ God; * I call upon you all/ the day long. 4 Gladden the soul of your/ ser-vant, * for to you, O LORD, I lift/ up my soul. 5 For you, O LORD, are good and for/-gi-ving, * and great is your love toward all who/ call up-on you. 8 Among the gods there is none like you, O/ LORD, * nor anything/ like your works. 9 All nations you have made will come and worship you, O/ LORD, * and glory/-fy your Name.

The Epistle ...... Romans 6:1b-11

Should we continue in sin in order that grace may abound? By no means! How can we who died to sin go on living in it? Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? Therefore we have been buried with him by baptism into death, so that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, so we too might walk in newness of life. For if we have been united with him in a death like his, we will certainly be united with him in a resurrection like his. We know that

6 our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be destroyed, and we might no longer be enslaved to sin. For whoever has died is freed from sin. But if we have died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. We know that Christ, being raised from the dead, will never die again; death no longer has dominion over him. The death he died, he died to sin, once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God. So you also consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

The Holy Gospel ...... Matthew 10:24-39

Officiant The Holy Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew. People Glory to you, Lord Christ.

Jesus said to the twelve disciples, “A disciple is not above the teacher, nor a slave above the master; it is enough for the disciple to be like the teacher, and the slave like the master. If they have called the master of the house Beelzebul, how much more will they malign those of his household! So have no fear of them; for nothing is covered up that will not be uncovered, and nothing that will not become known. What I say to you in the dark, tell in the light; and what you hear whispered, proclaim from the housetops. Do not fear those who kill the body but cannot kill the soul; rather fear him who can destroy both soul and body in hell. Are not two sparrows sold for a penny? Yet not one of them will fall to the ground apart from your Father. And even the hairs of your head are all counted. So do not be afraid; you are of more value than many sparrows. Everyone therefore who acknowledges me before others, I also will acknowledge before my Father in heaven; but whoever denies me before others, I also will deny before my Father in heaven. Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth; I have not come to bring peace, but a sword. For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law; and one’s foes will be members of one’s own household. Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me; and whoever does not

7 take up the cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Those who find their life will lose it, and those who lose their life for my sake will find it.”

Officiant The Gospel of the Lord. People Praise to you, Lord Christ.

The Sermon ...... the Rev. George D. Smith

The All stand

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen. We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets.

We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

Fountain of life and source of all goodness, you made all things and fill them with your blessing; you created them to rejoice in the splendor of your radiance. Countless throngs of angels stand before you to serve you night and day; and, beholding the glory of your presence, they offer you unceasing praise. Joining with them, and giving voice to every creature under heaven, we acclaim you, and glorify your Name, as we sing,

At the conclusion of the Sanctus, the people may stand, sit, or kneel.

Then the Officiant continues On the night in which he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus took bread and gave thanks; broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take and eat; this is my body, given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper he took the cup, gave thanks, and gave it for all to drink, saying: This cup is the new covenant in my blood, shed for you and for all people for the forgiveness of sin. Do this for the remembrance of me.

Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of faith:

Interim Youth Coordinator: Hello! My name is Cynthia Mote, and I will be serving as the St. Mark's Interim Youth Coordinator. I have been a member of St. Mark's since 2006. I have served on the vestry as the youth representative, was a summer intern working with Kim Reed, and was the college intern for 3 years helping to teach the high school Sunday school. I recently graduated Elmhurst College with a double major in sociology and criminal justice, with a minor in social work. I'm very excited to be stepping into this position. Having participated in many events as a youth and also having the privilege of working with current youth, I can truly say I think one of St. Mark's strongest features is our youth and our youth programs. I'm honored and extremely excited to be joining the St. Mark's staff.

A Trial Walk

Would you like to be part of a group that undertakes a day-long walk from St. Mark’s to Buckingham Fountain? Please contact George Smith at [email protected].

Why walk? Our society is characterized by a bubble culture where invisible and sometimes visible walls isolate people into distinct groups, often by race, religion, age and economics. By walking from St. Mark’s to Lake Michigan, we will cross through a variety of landscapes and neighborhoods. As Christians whose mission is reconciliation, we are called not just to say “We are not afraid” but to put it into action.

This first walk will be a trial walk to be followed by a walk that is open to anyone and will be tied to raising funds for a specific cause and for breaking through barriers. If you don’t think you can walk the entire distance, you can join for part of it.

17 MISSION AND OUTREACH

Join the new Parish Life committee!

This new committee will be responsible for organizing and developing four main activities or events: Annual picnic, kick-off Sunday, annual meeting, and weekly coffee hour. As a committee, we may decide to take on additional activities or events.

What's involved? • Regular meetings (perhaps quarterly) • Volunteering to work on the four events listed above • Creating a detailed "playbook" of each of these main activities (and any others) to simplify future years • Helping to direct and determine where Parish Life goes next

We will be meeting on July 12, 7:30pm, at St. Mark’s in the library. If you are interested, please email Lynn Dornblaser at [email protected].

St. Mark's serves at PADS the first Sunday of the month through the next Monday morning at the First Congregational Church of Glen Ellyn. The next time we serve is Sunday, July 2nd through Monday morning, July 3rd. We are looking for 1 - 2 new volunteers to join our Breakfast Team. The hours are either 5:00 a.m. until ~ 7:00 - 7:15 a.m. for those who would like to both cook and clean-up or from 6:00 - 7:00 - 7:15 a.m. for those who only would like to help clean-up. For more information please contact David Dornblaser at 630.215.7999 or [email protected].

18 2017 Mexico Mission Trip: Thank you for your support and prayers during the recent Mexico Mission Trip. We had a wonderful 12th visit with our Brothers and Sisters in Christ at our companion parish, San Marcos in Nigromante. They send their greetings and gratitude for our continued support for all these years. If you missed the trip reflections this past Sunday, you can learn more about this mission trip and our companion parish relationship on August 13 at 11:45 am during the St. Mark's Mission Trips presentations and lunch.

Want to be a Butterfly Garden Keeper? St. Mark’s large garden at the northwest corner of the property, across from Blackberry Market, is in need of some TLC. The garden has some wonderful butterfly- and hummingbird-attracting plants, such as spiderwort (the one that is blooming right now with beautiful blue flowers, especially showy in the mornings), milkweed, bee balm, celandine poppies, penstemon, Russian sage, daylilies, asters, sedum… But there are also some overzealous weeds that need removing. The Green Team is committed to clearing out the unwanted plants and mulching the newly liberated soil to help keep the weeds at bay, and then making the garden more attractive and (dare we say?) educational. We’ve already made a great start on clearing out the unwanted plants. We would love to get a good cross section of ages to help us continue the liberation and to share our knowledge (such as it is) with the younger generation while hearing what they already know about native and/or pollinator-friendly plants. So if you (and your kids if you have them) would be able to pitch in an hour a week, let us know! Email [email protected], or ask any of the Green Team members: Christy Becker, Edna Heatherington, Ginnie Judd, Jan Langford, April Sedall. Thank you!

The St. Mark’s art committee is grateful and pleased to celebrate “The Queen Bee’s Labor,” the work of parishioner Tricia Benich, at St. Mark’s through today. Tricia is an experienced and prolific needle artist who has been stitching for 35 years. The exhibit showcases how she has recently been exclusively working in a genre called primitive cross stitch, which is detailed stitching on fine linen with folk art subjects inspired by eighteenth and nineteenth century samplers. Her skills also include needlepoint, counted stitching on canvas, and cross stitch on linen, as well as watercolor painting. The work is not for sale.

21 Upcoming: Borrowing from Japan is an exhibit of calligraphy and drawings by artist Matthew Wright. This body of work is inspired by the Japanese philosophy and aesthetic wabi sabi. “Wabi sabi is a way of living that focuses on finding beauty within the imperfections of life and accepting peacefully the natural cycle of growth and decay.” In the West, we are influenced by the Greek ideals of beauty and perfection, but wabi sabi offers a contrasting ideology and in some ways a simpler and more peaceful way of existence. Borrowing from Japan will be exhibited in the sanctuary at St. Mark’s from July 2, 2017 – September 10, 2017. An artist’s reception and talk is scheduled for July 21, 2017, from 6-8pm. Refreshments will be served. Please join us.

Summer Is For Reading! If you are looking for a good read this summer, consider one of the greatest stories of history: The Book of Acts (also known as The Acts of the Apostles). In 28 chapters, Acts narrates what happens to the first disciples after Jesus “was lifted up, and a cloud took him out of their sight.” On the fiftieth day after Easter, the Day of Pentecost, the Holy Spirit enabled the Galilean disciples to speak in all of the languages of the world. It wasn’t just advanced linguistics that the Holy Spirit gave them, but the confidence and conviction to share the Good News of God revealed in the life, ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus. We see Peter, who had denied Jesus three times, become transformed into a powerful orator and leader. Paul, who at first seeks to persecute the followers of Jesus, is converted into an apostle himself. He claims that he is least among the disciples, but through his witness, travels and writings, he brings the message of Jesus the far reaches of the Roman Empire. If you have experienced the Bible as boring or tedious, give the Book of Acts a try. It truly is a page turner and will keep you on the edge of your seat through trials and shipwrecks and all the way from Jerusalem to Rome, where Paul is taken as a prisoner and continues to proclaim the Gospel in what was considered the center of the universe. I recommend either the NRSV (New Revised Standard Version) or NIV (New International Version) versions of the Bible. Copies of the Books of the Bible, which contains an NIV version of Acts, are available at St. Mark’s in the narthex. A donation of $5 per copy is suggested. Enjoy growing in faith as you read how the message of Christianity took hold and changed the world.
