Acacia mearnsii is the most widespread and important weed but also forms the basis of an important industry. A. dealbata, and to a lesser extent A. decurrens are also problems. All belong to the Section Botrycephalae of the sub-genus Heterophyllum. Short term control is achieved locally by removing plants, and by using herbicides, but seed-feeding control agents may provide an acceptable solution in the long term. Larvae of Bruchophagus acaciae (Cameron) (Hymenoptera: Eurytomidae) develop in the seeds of acacias. It was described from New Zealand, but is an Australian species. We explore whether B. acaciae has a role as a con- trol agent for acacias in South Africa. Seed was collected from 28 Australian species of Acacia growing in New Zealand. Attack was restricted to four of the seven species with- in the Section Botrycephalae, and two cases of attack on Acacia rubida (Section Phyllodineae; n=9). The Condensed Tannins of Okoume (Aucoumea Klaineana Pierre)
www.nature.com/scientificreports OPEN The condensed tannins of Okoume (Aucoumea klaineana Pierre): A molecular structure and thermal stability study Starlin Péguy Engozogho Anris 1,2*, Arsène Bikoro Bi Athomo1,2, Rodrigue Safou Tchiama2,3, Francisco José Santiago-Medina4, Thomas Cabaret1, Antonio Pizzi4 & Bertrand Charrier1 In order to promote convenient strategies for the valorization of Aucoumea klaineana Pierre (Okoume) plywood and sawmill wastes industry in the felds of adhesives and composites, the total phenolic content of Okoume bark, sapwood and heartwood was measured. The molecular structure of tannins extracted from the bark was determined by Matrix Assisted Laser Desorption/Ionization Time-Of-Flight (Maldi-ToF) mass spectrometry and Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR). The total phenolic content displayed signifcant diference (p = 0.001) between the bark, sapwood and heartwood which decreased as follows: 6 ± 0.4, 2 ± 0.8 and 0.7 ± 0.1% respectively. The pro-anthocyanidins content was also signifcantly diferent (p = 0.01) among the three wood wastes, and the bark was the richest in condensed tannins (4.2 ± 0.4%) compared to the sapwood (0.5 ± 0.1%) and heartwood (0.2 ± 0.2%). Liquid chromatography coupled mass spectroscopy (LC-MS) and Maldi-ToF analysis of the bark showed for the frst time that Okoume condensed tannins are fsetinidin, gallocatechin and trihydroxyfavan based monomers and complex polymers obtained with glycosylated units. No free catechin or robitinidin units were detected, whereas distinctive dihydroxy or trihydroxyfavan-3-benzoate dimers were observed in the investigated condensed tannin extracts. FTIR analysis showed the occurrence of glucan- and mannan-like sugars in the condensed tannins, and Maldi-ToF highlighted that these sugars should account for ten glycosylated units chemically bonded with two fsetinidins and one gallocatechin trimer. -

Sister to Anchomanes, Pseudohydrosme is distinct from Anchomanes because of its 2–3-locular ovary (not unilocular), peduncle concealed by cataphylls at anthesis and far shorter than the spathe (not exposed, far exceeding the spathe), stipitate fruits and viviparous (vegetatively apomictic) roots (not sessile, roots non-viviparous). Three species, one new to science, are recognised, in two sections. Although doubt has previously been cast on the value of recognising Pseudohydrosme buettneri, of Gabon, it is here accepted and maintained as a distinct species in the monotypic section, Zyganthera. However, it is considered to be probably globally extinct. Pseudohydrosme gabunensis, type species of the genus, also Gabonese, is maintained in Sect. Pseudohydrosme together with Pseudohydrosme ebo sp.nov. of the Ebo Forest, Littoral, Cameroon, the first addition to the genus since the nineteenth century, and which extends the range of the genus 450 km north from Gabon, into the Cross-Sanaga biogeographic area. -

Tel: +251910140961; Email: [email protected] Abstract Korarima in a Kaffa zone could be explained as the most popular spice as it’s widely production and prolonged socio-economic importance. Relevant information on production and marketing of korarima is needed for improving productivity and design of effective policy. This study was conducted with specific objectives: to assess status of korarima production, to identify factors affecting market supply of korarima and to identify constraints in production and marketing of korarima in Kaffa zone, Southern Ethiopia. The study was based on the data collected from 116sample households selected through multistage sampling technique. Descriptive statistics and econometric model were used to analyze the data. A multiple linear regression model was employed to assess the factors affecting of households’ market supply of korarima output. Major constraints in production and marketing of korarima in the zone includes disease, animal and pest damage, low yield due to climate change effect, low productivity of existing varieties, poor extension support, lack of improved korarima production practices, lack of well-designed output marketing center, and traditional harvesting and post-harvest handling techniques. -

Biodiversity Summary for NRM Regions Species List What is the summary for and where does it come from? This list has been produced by the Department of Sustainability, Environment, Water, Population and Communities (SEWPC) for the Natural Resource Management Spatial Information System. The list was produced using the AustralianAustralian Natural Natural Heritage Heritage Assessment Assessment Tool Tool (ANHAT), which analyses data from a range of plant and animal surveys and collections from across Australia to automatically generate a report for each NRM region. Data sources (Appendix 2) include national and state herbaria, museums, state governments, CSIRO, Birds Australia and a range of surveys conducted by or for DEWHA. For each family of plant and animal covered by ANHAT (Appendix 1), this document gives the number of species in the country and how many of them are found in the region. It also identifies species listed as Vulnerable, Critically Endangered, Endangered or Conservation Dependent under the EPBC Act. A biodiversity summary for this region is also available. Common's paper, "Some factors responsible for imbalances in the Aus tralian fauna of Lepidoptera" (1981, J. Lepid. Soc. 34:286-294), and his remarks on the role of Eucalyptus as a lepidopterous food plant suggest that a list of the Lepidoptera feeding on the introduced Eucalyptus spp. in East Africa might be of interest. Various species of Eucalyptus are grown in many parts of East Africa, primarily as sources of firewood but also as useful agents in the reclamation of swampy land. E. citriodora is grown as a plantation crop in Zaire and elsewhere for its oil, used in the perfumery trade.
