AMONG the memoranda handed to me by Mr. Hedley in connection with the insects collected at Funafuti, the following remark occurs :-" The collection brought back does scanty justice to the Entomological fauna of Funafuti, whose claims were, I fear, unduly subordinated to the demands of the Marine Invertebrata, the spiders being the only group whose proportions are at all fairly represented." Small as the collection is, however, it is not by any means devoid of interest, for while there are individuals amongst it that are well known to Entomologists, there are also some that are new. Indeed, it would be strange if it were not so, when we consider the rich fields awaiting the labours of systematic workers among the islands of the Pacific, that are, as yet, comparatively untouched. And it must also be borne in mind, that the fauna of the islands compriRing the various groups-of which the Ellice Group is one-is of a more or less derived nature-that is to say, the fauna of anyone island or group can scarcely be considered as appertaining solely to it, but must be studied from a much broader standpoint, not only as regards the distribution of the genera, but also of the species. -

Project Update: June 2013 the Monte Iberia Plateau at The
Project Update: June 2013 The Monte Iberia plateau at the Alejandro de Humboldt National Park (AHNP) was visited in April and June of 2013. A total of 152 butterflies and moths grouped in 22 families were recorded. In total, 31 species of butterflies belonging to five families were observed, all but two new records to area (see list below). Six species and 12 subspecies are Cuban endemics, including five endemics restricted to the Nipe-Sagua- Baracoa. In total, 108 species of moths belonging to 17 families were registered, including 25 endemic species of which five inhabit exclusively the NSB Mountains (see list below). In total, 52 butterflies and endemic moth species were photographed to be included in a guide of butterflies and endemic moths inhabiting Monte Iberia. Vegetation types sampled were the evergreen forests, rainforest, and charrascals (scrub on serpentine soil) at both north and southern slopes of Monte Iberia plateau Sixteen butterfly species were observed in transects. Park authorities were contacted in preparation on a workshop to capacitate park staff. Butterfly and moth species recorded at different vegetation types of Monte Iberia plateau in April and June of 2013. Common's paper, "Some factors responsible for imbalances in the Aus tralian fauna of Lepidoptera" (1981, J. Lepid. Soc. 34:286-294), and his remarks on the role of Eucalyptus as a lepidopterous food plant suggest that a list of the Lepidoptera feeding on the introduced Eucalyptus spp. in East Africa might be of interest. Various species of Eucalyptus are grown in many parts of East Africa, primarily as sources of firewood but also as useful agents in the reclamation of swampy land. E. citriodora is grown as a plantation crop in Zaire and elsewhere for its oil, used in the perfumery trade. Contributions Toward a Lepidoptera (Psychidae, Yponomeutidae, Sesiidae, Cossidae, Zygaenoidea, Thyrididae, Drepanoidea, Geometroidea, Mimalonoidea, Bombycoidea, Sphingoidea, & Noctuoidea) Biodiversity Inventory of the University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Lab Hugo L. Kons Jr. Last Update: June 2001 Abstract A systematic check list of 489 species of Lepidoptera collected in the University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Lab is presented, including 464 species in the superfamilies Drepanoidea, Geometroidea, Mimalonoidea, Bombycoidea, Sphingoidea, and Noctuoidea. Taxa recorded in Psychidae, Yponomeutidae, Sesiidae, Cossidae, Zygaenoidea, and Thyrididae are also included. Moth taxa were collected at ultraviolet lights, bait, introduced Bahiagrass (Paspalum notatum), and by netting specimens. A list of taxa recorded feeding on P. notatum is presented. Introduction The University of Florida Natural Area Teaching Laboratory (NATL) contains 40 acres of natural habitats maintained for scientific research, conservation, and teaching purposes. Habitat types present include hammock, upland pine, disturbed open field, cat tail marsh, and shallow pond. An active management plan has been developed for this area, including prescribed burning to restore the upland pine community and establishment of plots to study succession (http://csssrvr.entnem.ufl.edu/~walker/natl.htm). The site is a popular collecting locality for student and scientific collections. The author has done extensive collecting and field work at NATL, and two previous reports have resulted from this work, including: a biodiversity inventory of the butterflies (Lepidoptera: Hesperioidea & Papilionoidea) of NATL (Kons 1999), and an ecological study of Hermeuptychia hermes (F.) and Megisto cymela (Cram.) in NATL habitats (Kons 1998). Other workers have posted NATL check lists for Ichneumonidae, Sphecidae, Tettigoniidae, and Gryllidae (http://csssrvr.entnem.ufl.edu/~walker/insect.htm). -

This study aims to establish Station of Bouake, Entomology a new classification of cotton production areas, on the basis of predominant pests.
