VI Abstract This thesis proposes to study the strategies of construction of the Russian (Soviet) filmmaker Andriêi Arsiénievitch Tarkóvski, establishing as the scope of the analysis the seven full-length features he made between 1962 and 1986. The central hypothesis is that the Tarkovskian cinematic works were made through the articulation of procedures inherent to the world view model organized through an reverse perspective, an articulation which opened possibilities for aesthetic experimentations associated to the predominant model, organized by the linear perspective. The underlying hypothesis is that the construction strategies in Tarkóvsky’s cinema present themselves as a form o resistance to the Soviet cannons of arts and communication. The primary objective is to understand how these world view models connect with the visible world to produce visual messages and in which way such models problematize the concept of realism in the Arts and one of its derivatives, the Socialist

  • Full Cinematic Retrospective of Director Andrei Tarkovsky This Summer at MAD
Full Cinematic Retrospective of Director Andrei Tarkovsky this Summer at MAD Andrei Tarkovsky, Sculpting in Time presents the work of the revolutionary director and includes screenings—all on 35 mm—of all seven feature films and a behind-the-scenes documentary Stalker, 1976. Andrei Tarkovsky. New York, NY (June 8, 2015)—The Museum of Arts and Design presents a full cinematic retrospective of Andrei Tarkovsky’s work this summer with its latest cinema series, Andrei Tarkovsky, Sculpting in Time, from July 10 through August 28, 2015. Over the course of just seven feature films, Tarkovsky produced a poetic and enigmatic body of work that expanded the possibilities of cinema as an art form and transformed a wide range of genres including science fiction, war stories, film essays and historical dramas. Celebrating the legacy of this revolutionary director, the retrospective includes screenings of Tarkovsky’s seven feature films on 35 mm, as well as a behind-the-scenes documentary that reveals the process behind his groundbreaking practice and cinematic achievements. “Few directors have had as large of an influence on cinema as Andrei Tarkovsky,” says Jake Yuzna, MAD’s Director of Public Programs. “Working under censorship and with little support from the Soviet Union, Tarkovsky fought fiercely for his conceptualization of cinema as a singular and vital art form. Reconsidering the role of films in an age of increasing technology, Tarkovsky saw cinema as not merely a tool for communicating information, but as ‘a moral barometer in a sea of competing narratives.’” 2 COLUMBUS CIRCLE NEW YORK, NEW YORK 10019 P 212.299.7777 F 212.299.7701 MADMUSEUM.ORG Premiering on July 10 with Tarkovsky’s science fiction classic, Solaris, the retrospective showcases the director’s distinctive and influential aesthetic, characterized by expressive, sweeping takes, the evocative use of landscapes, and his method of “sculpting in time” with a camera.

  • Shakespeare on Film, Video & Stage
William Shakespeare on Film, Video and Stage Titles in bold red font with an asterisk (*) represent the crème de la crème – first choice titles in each category. These are the titles you’ll probably want to explore first. Titles in bold black font are the second- tier – outstanding films that are the next level of artistry and craftsmanship. Once you have experienced the top tier, these are where you should go next. They may not represent the highest achievement in each genre, but they are definitely a cut above the rest. Finally, the titles which are in a regular black font constitute the rest of the films within the genre. I would be the first to admit that some of these may actually be worthy of being “ranked” more highly, but it is a ridiculously subjective matter. Women Directors in ‘Global’ Art Cinema: Negotiating Feminism and Representation Despoina Mantziari PhD Thesis University of East Anglia School of Film, Television and Media Studies March 2014 “This copy of the thesis has been supplied on condition that anyone who consults it is understood to recognise that its copyright rests with the author and that use of any information derived there from must be in accordance with current UK Copyright Law. In addition, any quotation or extract must include full attribution.” Women Directors in Global Art Cinema: Negotiating Feminism and Aesthetics The thesis explores the cultural field of global art cinema as a potential space for the inscription of female authorship and feminist issues. Despite their active involvement in filmmaking, traditionally women directors have not been centralised in scholarship on art cinema. Filmmakers such as Germaine Dulac, Agnès Varda and Sally Potter, for instance, have produced significant cinematic oeuvres but due to the field's continuing phallocentricity, they have not enjoyed the critical acclaim of their male peers. Feminist scholarship has focused mainly on the study of Hollywood and although some scholars have foregrounded the work of female filmmakers in non-Hollywood contexts, the relationship between art cinema and women filmmakers has not been adequately explored. The thesis addresses this gap by focusing on art cinema. It argues that art cinema maintains a precarious balance between two contradictory positions; as a route into filmmaking for women directors allowing for political expressivity, with its emphasis on artistic freedom which creates a space for non-dominant and potentially subversive representations and themes, and as another hostile universe given its more elitist and auteurist orientation.

December 2014 For immediate release MALBA announces its program of exhibitions and activities for 2015 MALBA announces its schedule of exhibitions for the 2015 season, the first under Agustín Pérez Rubio, the museum’s Artistic Director since May 2014. The program consists of three large-format exhibitions that, in keeping with the museum’s guidelines, include one exhibition centered on Argentine art, a second on art from the larger Latin American region, and a third exhibition of an international nature. Experiencia infinita [Infinite Experience], which will open on March 19, is the first exhibition of its sort to be held in a Latin America institution. This show, which features constructed situations by outstanding international artists, evidences the different ways the concept of “live works” has reached the exhibition space in recent decades. Participating artists include Elmgreen & Dragset [Michael Elmgreen (Copenhagen, Denmark, 1961) and Ingar Dragset (Trondheim, Norway, 1968)] , Dora García (Valladolid, Spain, 1965), Roman Ondák (Zilina, Slovakia, 1966), Diego Bianchi (Buenos Aires, 1969), Pierre Huyghe (Paris, 1962), Allora & Calzadilla [Jennifer Allora (Philadelphia, USA, 1974) and Guillermo Calzadilla (Havana, Cuba, 1971)], Tino Sehgal (London, UK, 1976), and Judi Werthein (Buenos Aires, 1967). Work on the second exhibition, in homage to Rogelio Polesello (Buenos Aires, 1939– 2014), began two years ago. The result of thorough research into and cataloguing of the artist’s personal archive, this exhibition will feature a selection of over eighty historical pieces produced between the late fifties and the seventies, as well as documents that attest to the contribution of the “young Polesello” to Latin American Op art and to the art-design- industry triad.

Aspects of Intimacy: Authority and Integrity in the Modernist Novel by Andrew Bingham A thesis submitted to the Graduate Program in English Language and Literature in conformity with the requirements for the Degree of Doctor of Philosophy Queen’s University Kingston, Ontario, Canada November, 2018 Copyright © Andrew Bingham, 2018 “Some ideas exist that are unexpressed and unconscious but that simply are strongly felt; many such ideas are fused, as it were, with the human heart.” (Fyodor Dostoevsky, A Writer’s Diary, “Environment,” 1873) “Special methods of thinking. Permeated with emotion. Everything feels itself to be a thought, even the vaguest feelings (Dostoevsky).” (Franz Kafka, Diaries 1910-1923, 21 July 1913) “One must write from deep feeling, said Dostoevsky. And do I? Or do I fabricate with words, loving them as I do? No, I think not. In this book I have almost too many ideas. I want to give life and death, sanity and insanity; I want to criticise the social system, and to show it at work, at its most intense. But here I may be posing.” (Virginia Woolf, Diary, 19 June 1923) “One can, correctly and immediately, comprehend and feel something deeply; but one cannot, immediately, become a person; one must be formed into a person. It is a discipline.” (Fyodor Dostoevsky, A Writer’s Diary, February 1877) “Each spiritual stance creates its own style.” (Witold Gombrowicz, Diary, 495) ii Abstract In the following thesis I strive to offer renewed ways of construing “one’s own,” authority, integrity, and intimacy as literary themes, and appropriate form, provisional tonality, and approximate, inexhaustible address as formal aspects of literary works or methodological tools for literary scholars.
