Tandridge Neighbourhood Watch Newsletter

BULLETIN 17 August 15th – August 28th 2019

Dear Neighbourhood Watch Members

Mark Howells, our Crime Reduction Adviser, recently issued some advice concerning garden crime and break-ins into sheds and garages which I make no apologies for repeating as we have experienced an increase in these crimes over the past few weeks in . We are urging residents to be mindful about securing their equipment kept in a garage, shed or garden. Many houses are securely alarmed but garages and outbuildings are often left insecure and can offer ‘easy pickings’ for a criminal. The local policing team and additional colleagues have increased their patrols across the area but you can also make a difference.

Use good quality fixings and a padlock to secure doors using anti-tamper screws in door hinges

Lock all windows

Fit a mains or battery powered alarm

Use a forensic coding product to 'property mark' all valuable tools and equipment

Secure lawnmowers, petrol powered items and other valuable equipment to the wall or floor using a ground anchor or similar

Make items difficult to move by placing obstacles in front of them

Consider the use of CCTV

Use Outside lighting as a deterrent

Let nature help – Holly and hawthorn are particularly difficult to get through. Prickly, deciduous shrubs next to walls or fences act as an effective barrier
