Tandridge Neighbourhood Watch Newsletter Bulletin 15 Tandridge Neighbourhood Watch Newsletter Bulletin 15 TANDRIDGE NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH NEWSLETTER BULLETIN 15 JULY 18th - JULY 31st 2019 Dear Neighbourhood Watch Members We have just entered the school holiday period, and no doubt some of you will be looking to go away to try and continue finding some sun. Please be aware that criminals do try and target houses they believe to be empty. Take all necessary precautions before you go. Tell your neighbours of your intentions and ask them to keep an eye out for anyone suspicious around your property. Timer switches for lights are a very useful tool. If you have nearby relatives or really trust your neighbours then leave house keys with them and ask them to attend your house on occasions to check if all is ok and to move mail etc., as this gives the impression that the house is being used. During periods of hot weather unfortunately cases of opportunistic burglaries increase. These crimes can be reduced if you follow good crime prevention advice. If you are going to leave downstairs windows open to allow airflow through the house, there are many types of catches that can be bought to stop the window opening fully, making it hard for a burglar to enter. Never leave the downstairs windows open overnight. Be aware that if you leave rear/kitchen doors open while you are elsewhere in the house an opportunistic thief can see this as an opportunity. It will only take a criminal a matter of seconds to take something of value. If you have any upper storey windows that open onto flat roofs, again consider window catches or leave these windows shut. Items such as anti-climb paint can help in preventing burglars gaining access to flat roofs. We hope you have a safe and problem free summer. Dan Gutierrez Tandridge Safer Neighbourhood Inspector If your area is not referred to below it is because we have not been informed of the crime or it has not been affected by reported crime in the categories below. Feedback from you will help to achieve the most appropriate circulation of information. CRIME REPORTS IN YOUR NEIGHBOURHOOD Our Area Patrol Team and Safer Neighbourhood Team deal with a variety of incidents. Here are a few they dealt with over the last two weeks and a Court result. Darren Smith (22) of South Nutfield has been found guilty at Court for handling stolen goods. Last year we needed to speak to him about another matter and found photos of some bronze deer statues that he was trying to sell. With a bit of investigative work they were found to be stolen from a garden in Woldingham in June 2018.He was sentenced to a Community Order, a compensation order of £500 and fined £85. Reports of shop lifting on July 29th from multiple stores in Oxted, resulted shortly afterwards in recovery of stolen property, one in custody and a vehicle used in crime off the road. Following a call to a domestic incident in Caterham on July 29th a male was arrested and charged with assaulting three police officers, criminal damage to a vehicle and racially aggravated public order. On July 29th in Warlingham a male was arrested for criminal damage after throwing a bin through a shopfront. Someone got an early knock from us on July 30th in South Tandridge. Quite a substantial amount of class A and class B drugs found. One male arrested and answering some questions at our Blue Lamp Hotel about possession with intent to supply. • Southern Railway Stations in South London
Southern Railway stations in South London The south London area stations of Southern Region of British Railways and its constituents tend to be somewhat neglected, perhaps due to the prevalent suburban electric services, but comprised some fine examples of former company architecture. The following pictures were all taken in August 1973; a few of the sites have since disappeared, many others surely much modernised by now, and some have even been nicely restored...... First, we look at the former South Eastern Railway branch line from Purley to Caterham. Here is Kenley, whose cottage-style station house with very steep-pitched roof and gothic detailing is now a listed building, but privately owned. It dates from the construction of the Caterham Railway in 1856 and is by architect Richard Whittall. Below is Whyteleafe, (left) down side waiting room and footbridge, and the signal box and level crossing at Whyteleafe South...... The signalbox nameboard shows that the station had been re-signed with modern British Rail white enamel plates; in late 1972 I found one of the much more attractive 1950-era station nameplates for sale in an antique shop near Paddington station, for the pricely sum of £2.50p. In contrast the teminus station building at Caterham still displayed its “Southern Electric” enamelware...... Here are two more views at Caterham, with the SE&CR wooden signalbox at right...... Moving on to Anerley, this is an ex London Brighton & South Coast Railway station on its line from London Bridge to West Croydon, just to the north of Norwood Junction. At least part of the main building is thought to date from the line opening in 1839.

  • Tandridge Local Plan Consultation Please Write in Now!
Tandridge Local Plan consultation Please write in now! Tandridge Council’s new Local Plan c laims 9,400 more houses are needed. The Council has identified sites for more than 1,500 around Smallfield and Burstow, mostly on Green Belt land How will the Plan affect you? The Local Plan sets the policy for future housing development in Tandridge District for the next 20 years. Once it is agreed, all planning applications will be decided in line with it, so it’s important to make your views known now. Although at this time there are no designated sites for major development in Horne listed on the local plan there are a significant amount of sites in the surrounding villages, notably, Smallfield, Lingfield and Felbridge. The Plan claims that 470 houses are needed every year, almost 4 times the current requirement. The increase has been assessed by a leading specialist consultant looking at population, demographics, migration and household size trends over the next 20 years. This scale of building would put intolerable and unsustainable pressure on infrastructure such as schools, health services, roads, rail services and parking which are already struggling to cope with the existing demand. What can you do? If you want to meet our local needs, protect the local environment, protect local infrastructure from being swamped by overdevelopment and achieve a reasonable and proportionate outcome for Tandridge.... Please take part in this crucial consultation and send comments to Tandridge Council. Either: 1. Email comments to: [email protected] OR 2. Send a letter marked “Local Plan consultation” to: Planning Policy, Tandridge District Council, Council Offices, 8 Station Road East, Oxted, Surrey, RH8 0BT OR 3.
