CosmosVacations.ca 9 There is cause for celebration this year in Spain to follow the paths of Saint James and St. . Take a walk of faith on the Way of St. James or visit the Sanctuary of Loyola to be awed and inspired by the lives of the saints. Also make plans to witness the passion of Christ in the Bavarian town of Oberammergau to see the once-a-decade performance of the Passion Play. Now rescheduled for 2022.

“An ancient path leads to new roads.

10 Walking By Faith THE YEAR OF ST. JAMES Each year, Cosmos welcomes travelers from around the world to join us in , Spain, and embark on the Camino de —a historical pilgrimage on the French Way of St. James. Pilgrims set out on a 6-day walk from the town of Sarria to Santiago de Compostela (a UNESCO World Heritage Site) to worship at the shrine of the apostle St. James (see page 28). Cause for Jubilation 2021 is also a Jacobean (Latin, meaning St. James) Holy Year, commemorating Saint James Day (July 25) when it falls on a Sunday. Only during Holy Years the Porta Santa (Holy Door) of the Santiago Cathedral remains open, and pilgrims may receive a full plenary indulgence (absolute remission of sin) by taking the sacrament of reconciliation and attending Mass in the cathedral during the Jacobean year. Holy Jacobean Years follow a pattern of 6-5-6-11 year increments due to Leap Years. The most recent Jacobean Year prior to 2021 occurred in 2010; the next will arrive in 2027, 2032, and so on. You will visit Santiago de Compostela on “Fatima, Lourdes & Shrines of Spain,” Spiritual Highlights of Iberia, Lourdes & Italy,” and “The Camino, a Walking Journey for the Soul.”

ST. IGNATIUS OF LOYOLA JUBILEE YEAR In 2021/2022, we also celebrate the year of St. Ignatius of Loyola, founder of the Jesuit order. The Ignatian Year commemorates two important moments in the life of this religious Order. The first is the 500th anniversary of the conversion of Saint Ignatius of Loyola after he was wounded at the Battle of (1521-2021). The second is the 400th anniversary of the canonization of its founder, together with St. Francis Xavier (1622-2022). The Jesuits of the Join Cosmos in Loyola, Spain, during this jubilant year of Saint Ignatius and contemplate his trials and transformation that led to founding the Society of Jesus. You will visit Loyola on “Fatima, Lourdes & Shrines of Spain;” and “Spiritual Highlights of Iberia, Lourdes & Italy.”

OBERAMMERGAU 2022 PASSION PLAY Postponed until 2022, the once-a-decade performance of the Passion Play offers a second chance to see this spectacular reenactment of Christ’s passion and death originally planned for 2020. The Bavarian village of Oberammergau continues this epic tradition—today performed by a theater company of 2,000 local residents—which was first performed in 1634 as a vow to God for sparing the village from the plague. Book early and join us for an unforgettable experience to see the magnificent 2022 Oberammergau Passion Play, included on select Cosmos and Globus religious and secular vacation tours. See page 6 on the flip side of this brochure for more information.

CosmosVacations.ca 27 The history of the Camino de Santiago goes back to the 9th Century, when the tomb of the evangelical apostle St. James was discovered in what is today Santiago de Compostela. Since then, pilgrims from all over the world have walked St. James' Way, originally seeking forgiveness for their sins, and nowadays often just to spend time on a journey of personal growth. This is a challenging experience as it involves a significant physical effort as you walk through forests and along busy roads for many miles each day. Your rewards will be intangible, but priceless: an opportunity to enjoy nature, meditate, search for answers and challenge your limits. Discover beautiful rural areas of northern Spain, and make friends with whom you’ll have shared one of the most significant experiences of your life.
