The purpose of the shelter is to receive pet animals (dogs and cats). In accordance with the Decree on the Establishment of the Public Institution the Zoo (No.: 615- 13/ 03- 9, of 5 May 2003) the City of Ljubljana appointed the Public Institution the Zoo as the holder of the Shelter. 1.2. AUTHORITIES IN THE SHELTER FOR ABANDONED ANIMALS: Animal shelter board: constituted on March 1, 2007, Resolution No. 032-229/06-4: President: Barbara Mihelič (representative of the holder of the shelter) Members: Representatives of the local community: Jože Vidic, DVM, Miro Oberstar (Department of Pre-School Education and Sport, City Administration MOL) Representative of the Veterinary Administration of the Republic of Slovenia (VARS): Barbka Tomše (representative of VARS), , Representative of the Society for the Protection of Animals: Nataša Lokar (representative of the Society for the protection of Animals). Manager of the Animal Shelter: Marko Oman, DVM The shelter has a Manager and a Board of the shelter. The Manager of the animal shelter manages shelter activities, controls that the veterinary and sanitary regulations are respected, inserts volunteers in the working process and is responsible for keeping records. The Board of the shelter monitors the work of the shelter, decides on the amount of contributions and approves the pricelist of the shelter. It is also responsible for the promotion and acquisition of resources from sponsorships. The Board of the shelter has to consist of a representative of the local community, a representative of VARS, a representative of the Society for the Protection of Animals and a representative of the holder of the shelter. ANIMAL SHELTER ACTIVITIES: The animal shelter performs the following: - receives notifications about abandoned animals; - ensures necessary veterinary help and care for the abandoned animals; - offers catching, transportation, accommodation and care for the abandoned animals inside the shelter; - looks for the adopters of these animals or organizes rehoming of animals; - keeps all the necessary documentation and registers updated, as well as regularly submits reports to competent institutions; For the abandoned animals’ needs the shelter performs the following activities of the public veterinary service: - monitoring the health conditions of abandoned animals; - veterinary visits for abandoned animals; - marking abandoned animals and keeping registers according to the regulations; - basic laboratory diagnostics for discovering contagious diseases in abandoned animals; - implementing actions for preventing, discovering, curing and controlling animal diseases and injuries, as well as performing surgical operations on animals; - preventing the pollution of the environment with the agents and vectors of contagious diseases in animals; - implements actions connected to the hygienisation of sewage sludge - and guarantees the protection of abandoned animals residing in shelters and prevention of cruelty. In the performance of its tasks the shelter cooperates with the competent public service authorities, animal protection organizations and the interested public, and for the veterinary emergencies also with a contractual veterinary organization. Besides the above mentioned activities the shelter also performs the activity of educating children, youth and adult citizens, as well as it cooperates with educational organizations (schools, help and rehabilitation institutions). The shelter cooperates with other shelters in Slovenia and with cynological associations. In cooperation with them the shelter prepares professional lectures on the correct treatment of animals in shelters, their socialization and their habituation to the new home. It also organizes professional training for adopters, volunteer dog walkers and other volunteers, shelter employees and other interested public. 1.4.
