STATEMENT OF SIGNIFICANCE

/ William Alien White was a newspaper publisher of great renown, a writer, a novelist, an advisor of presidents, reformer, political liberal, and prime mover in 's Progressive Party. He first came to Estes Park area as a young man in 1889 and here, according to him, he "grew up and became a man." Throughout his life he came back to the area year after year, for the summers here Z refreshed him and renewed the wellsprings of this great man. o ^He acquired a cabin, apparently in 1912, and in the following year U added the porfch, the sleeping cabins and the study. Here the great and near great visited him, including presidential candidate Charles Evans Hughes, social worker Jane Addams, , and Clarence Darrow. During the '-.simmer he worked in his small : study- cab in and wrote -parts Ul of his novels and magazine articles. 111 These structures today symbolize the importance of nature to man and the role it pays in restoring jaded spirits and renewing determination. But their significance lies primarily in their association with William Alien White, a prominent figure for many years on the American scene.
