William Allen White Newspaper editor ( 1868 - 1944 ) William Allen White was a renowned newspaper editor, politician, and author. Between the two world wars, White, known as the “Sage of Emporia,” became the iconic middle-American spokesman for millions throughout the United States. Born in Emporia, Kansas, White attended the College of Emporia and the University of Kansas. In 1892 he started work at The Kansas City Star as an editorial writer and a year later married Sallie Lindsay. In 1895, White purchased his hometown newspaper, the Emporia Gazette for $3,000. He burst on to the national scene with an August 16, 1896 editorial entitled “What’s the Matter With Kansas?” White developed a friendship with President THEODORE ROOSEVELT in the1890s that lasted until Roosevelt’s death in 1919. The two would be instrumental in forming the Progressive (Bull-Moose) Party in 1912 in opposition to the forces surrounding incumbent Republican president WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT. Later, White supported much of the New Deal, but opposed FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT in his first three Presidential elec- tions. White died before voting in the 1944 election. Courtesy of Kenneth Neill Despite differences with FDR, White agreed to Roosevelt’s request to help generate public support for the Allies before America’s entrance into World War II. White was fundamental in the formation of the Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, sometimes known asthe White Committee. He spent much of his last three years involved with the committee. He won a 1923 Pulitzer Prize for an editorial he wrote after being arrest- ed in a dispute over free speech following objections to the way Kan- sas treated the workers who participated in the railroad strike of 1922. -

Harding's death, Calvin Coolidge I became President of the United States. For the next six years Coo lidge headed a nation which enjoyed amazing economic growth and relative peace. His administration progressed in the midst of a decade when material prosperity contributed heavily in changing the nature of the country. Coolidge's presidency was transitional in other respects, resting a bit uncomfortably between the passions of the World War I period and the Great Depression of the I 930's. It seems clear that Coolidge acted as a central figure in much of this transition, but the degree to which he was a causal agent, a catalyst, or simply the victim of forces of change remains a question that has prompted a wide range of historical opinion. Few prominent figures in United States history remain as difficult to understand as Calvin Coolidge. An agrarian bias prevails in :nuch of the historical writing on Coolidge. Unable to see much virtue or integrity in the Republican administrations of the twenties, many historians and friends of the farmers followed interpretations made by William Allen White. These picture Coolidge as essentially an unimaginative enemy of the farmer and a fumbling sphinx. The Problem with Classroom Use of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle Louise Carroll Wade There is no doubt that The Jungle helped shape American political history. Sinclair wrote it to call attention to the plight of Chicago packinghouse workers who had just lost a strike against the Beef Trust. The novel appeared in February 1906, was shrewdly promoted by both author and publisher, and quickly became a best seller. Its socialist message, however, was lost in the uproar over the relatively brief but nauseatingly graphic descriptions of packinghouse "crimes" and "swindles."1 The public's visceral reaction led Senator Albert Beveridge of Indiana to call for more extensive federal regulation of meat packing and forced Congress to pay attention to pending legislation that would set government standards for food and beverages. President Theodore Roosevelt sent two sets of investigators to Chicago and played a major role in securing congressional approval of Beveridge's measure. When the President signed this Meat Inspec tion Act and also the Food and Drugs Act in June, he graciously acknowledged Beveridge's help but said nothing about the famous novel or its author.2 Teachers of American history and American studies have been much kinder to Sinclair. Most consider him a muckraker because the public^responded so decisively to his accounts of rats scurrying over the meat and going into the hoppers or workers falling into vats and becoming part of Durham's lard. Many embrace The Jungle as a reasonably trustworthy source of information on urban immigrant industrial life at the turn of the century. -

The International Newsletter of Communist Studies Online XV (2009), no 22 23 Kostis Karpozilos, University of Crete, Rethymno (Greece): Labor Unions, Radicalism and the Communist Left in the Greek-American Communities (1920-1950). PhD Project.1 The aim of my dissertation is the presentation of the activities of the Greek-American left focusing mainly on the 1930s, when they reached their peak due to a series of factors such as the new line of the Communist International, the New Deal, the Spanish Civil War and the emergence of the dictatorship of Metaxas in Greece. More particularly, I intend to demonstrate that the communist left arose as a considerable force within the Greek- American communities proposing a distinct cultural and political program that combined class-consciousness with the process of Americanization. This research sheds light onto a neglected aspect of the history of the Greek presence in the United States since it reveals considerable transformations and changes of allegiances within the communities. Even though the communist left was in no way the hegemonic force among Greek-Americans, a series of sources indicate that it enjoyed considerable support. My research is based mainly on primary sources of the Greek-American left, the newspapers Organosis (Organization), Fone tou Ergatou (Voice of the Worker), Empros (Forward) and Ellinoamerikaniko Vema (Greek-American Tribune), the journal Protoporos (Pioneer), the publications (books and pamphlets) of various parties and organizations in Greece and the archival collection of the Communist Party of the United States. Moreover, I have worked on files of the Greek embassy and consulates in the United States, which are now held in the archives of the Greek Foreign Ministry, while scattered documents of interest have been located in various other institutions in Greece. -

Biography Newspaper editor William Allen White (1868-1944) was an important figure in the political, social and literary history of the United States and Kansas. Born in Emporia, Kansas, in 1868, he grew up in El Dorado, Kansas, attended the College of Emporia and the University of Kansas and worked on newspapers in Topeka and Kansas City before buying the Emporia Gazette in 1895. His famous editorial “What’s the Matter with Kansas?” was published in 1896.
