Within the Clubhouse, Presidents, members of Congress, ambassadors, Nobel Laureates, Pulitzer Prize winners, scientists, writers, and other distinguished individuals have expanded their minds, solved world problems, and discovered new ways to make contributions to humankind, just as the founders envisioned in 1878. William Allen White Newspaper editor ( 1868 - 1944 ) William Allen White was a renowned newspaper editor, politician, and author. Between the two world wars, White, known as the “Sage of Emporia,” became the iconic middle-American spokesman for millions throughout the United States. Born in Emporia, Kansas, White attended the College of Emporia and the University of Kansas. In 1892 he started work at The Kansas City Star as an editorial writer and a year later married Sallie Lindsay. In 1895, White purchased his hometown newspaper, the Emporia Gazette for $3,000. He burst on to the national scene with an August 16, 1896 editorial entitled “What’s the Matter With Kansas?” White developed a friendship with President THEODORE ROOSEVELT in the1890s that lasted until Roosevelt’s death in 1919. The two would be instrumental in forming the Progressive (Bull-Moose) Party in 1912 in opposition to the forces surrounding incumbent Republican president WILLIAM HOWARD TAFT. Later, White supported much of the New Deal, but opposed FRANKLIN D. ROOSEVELT in his first three Presidential elec- tions. White died before voting in the 1944 election. Courtesy of Kenneth Neill Despite differences with FDR, White agreed to Roosevelt’s request to help generate public support for the Allies before America’s entrance into World War II. White was fundamental in the formation of the Committee to Defend America by Aiding the Allies, sometimes known asthe White Committee. He spent much of his last three years involved with the committee. He won a 1923 Pulitzer Prize for an editorial he wrote after being arrest- ed in a dispute over free speech following objections to the way Kan- sas treated the workers who participated in the railroad strike of 1922. -

Harding's death, Calvin Coolidge I became President of the United States. For the next six years Coo lidge headed a nation which enjoyed amazing economic growth and relative peace. His administration progressed in the midst of a decade when material prosperity contributed heavily in changing the nature of the country. Coolidge's presidency was transitional in other respects, resting a bit uncomfortably between the passions of the World War I period and the Great Depression of the I 930's. It seems clear that Coolidge acted as a central figure in much of this transition, but the degree to which he was a causal agent, a catalyst, or simply the victim of forces of change remains a question that has prompted a wide range of historical opinion. Few prominent figures in United States history remain as difficult to understand as Calvin Coolidge. An agrarian bias prevails in :nuch of the historical writing on Coolidge. Unable to see much virtue or integrity in the Republican administrations of the twenties, many historians and friends of the farmers followed interpretations made by William Allen White. These picture Coolidge as essentially an unimaginative enemy of the farmer and a fumbling sphinx. What Is a Muckraker? President Theodore Roosevelt popularized the term muckrakers in a 1907 speech. The muckraker was a man in John Bunyan’s 1678 allegory Pilgrim’s Progress who was too busy raking through barnyard filth to look up and accept a crown of salvation. Though Roosevelt probably meant to include “mud-slinging” politicians who attacked others’ moral character rather than debating their ideas, the term has stuck as a reference to journalists who investigate wrongdoing by the rich or powerful. Historical Significance In its narrowest sense, the term refers to long-form, investigative journalism published in magazines between 1900 and World War I. Unlike yellow journalism, the reporters and editors of this period valued accuracy and the aggressive pursuit of information, often by searching through mounds of documents and data and by conducting extensive interviews. It sometimes included first- person reporting. Muckraking was seen in action when Ida M. Tarbell exposed the strong-armed practices of the Standard Oil Company in a 19-part series in McClure’s Magazine between 1902 and 1904. Her exposé helped end the company’s monopoly over the oil industry. Her stories include information from thousands of documents from across the nation as well as interviews with current and former executives, competitors, government regulators, antitrust lawyers and academic experts. It was republished as “The Rise of the Standard Oil Company.” Upton Sinclair’s investigation of the meatpacking industry gave rise to at least two significant federal laws, the Meat Inspection Act and the Pure Food and Drug Act. Sinclair spent seven weeks as a worker at a Chicago meatpacking plant and another four months investigating the industry, then published a fictional work based on his findings as serial from February to November of 1905 in a socialist magazine. -

The plethora of tabloids and morning discussions over who has broken up with whom attest to this fact. People love to read about the gripping stories of other people’s lives, especially when their own seem so boring and unexciting. They love the triumphs of a hard battle won, of a good turnout against all odds. But they love the darker side of humanity even more— hearing about thievery and calumny and murder and all the foibles of the lives of the rich, famous and powerful. In a sense, it is a way of “sticking it to the man,” as the saying goes. Such stories show opportunities that the average man will never have, and how they blew up in the face of those who misused them. -

The Problem with Classroom Use of Upton Sinclair's The Jungle Louise Carroll Wade There is no doubt that The Jungle helped shape American political history. Sinclair wrote it to call attention to the plight of Chicago packinghouse workers who had just lost a strike against the Beef Trust. The novel appeared in February 1906, was shrewdly promoted by both author and publisher, and quickly became a best seller. Its socialist message, however, was lost in the uproar over the relatively brief but nauseatingly graphic descriptions of packinghouse "crimes" and "swindles."1 The public's visceral reaction led Senator Albert Beveridge of Indiana to call for more extensive federal regulation of meat packing and forced Congress to pay attention to pending legislation that would set government standards for food and beverages. President Theodore Roosevelt sent two sets of investigators to Chicago and played a major role in securing congressional approval of Beveridge's measure. When the President signed this Meat Inspec tion Act and also the Food and Drugs Act in June, he graciously acknowledged Beveridge's help but said nothing about the famous novel or its author.2 Teachers of American history and American studies have been much kinder to Sinclair. Most consider him a muckraker because the public^responded so decisively to his accounts of rats scurrying over the meat and going into the hoppers or workers falling into vats and becoming part of Durham's lard. Many embrace The Jungle as a reasonably trustworthy source of information on urban immigrant industrial life at the turn of the century. -

Spring 2010 J-School program expands to meet student needs eginning in the fall, the J-School will imple- ment two major structural changes to boost the program’sB flexibility and ability to adapt to student needs: freshman admission and a new Journalism Minor in News and Media Innovation. “Students told us what they wanted and we listened,” Journalism Dean Ann Brill said. “These changes will allow more students to make their home in the J-School earlier in their college careers.” Freshman Admission J-School admission will remain competitive and selective, but the new freshman admissions policy revises admission requirements and reduces some of the barriers students now encounter. The first class of freshman admits were notified of the changes earlier this month. The students who received the admission letters were enthusiastic. “All of the feedback we’ve received thus far from students has been overwhelmingly positive,” A bronze Jayhawk statue welcomes Brill said. “Now students can make the J-School students to the KU campus. home from day one. We are excited at what this means for our students—more networking, mentoring and advising opportunities ear- lier in the academic process.” The freshman admissions policy outlines three “pathways” students can now use to enter the School.
