1981 Written to be the Introduction to a book in the Wisconsin/Warner Bros Screenplay Series, General Editor Tino Balio, published by the University of Wisconsin Press. These volumes reproduced classic Warner Bros scripts from the Warner Bros Archive at the Wisconsin Center for Film and Theater Research with scholarly apparatus. Between the commissioning of this volume and its completion the series was cancelled. The script itself and associated stills cannot be reproduced without copyright permission. Since the piece was written, Warner Bros post-production files have been acquired by the Cinema Studies Library of the University of Southern California. It is likely that they close some of the questions here raised about the final form of the film. INTRODUCTION The Politics of the War Film Ian Jarvie 1. The Evolution of the Screenplay 2. Summary of the Story as Filmed 3. Production and Exploitation 4. Reception and Appraisal 5. Political Aftermath Objective Burma has both intrinsic and extrinsic interest to students of the motion picture. Intrinsically, it is a fine example of sustained and unrelieved treatment of combat within the restrictions of the war film genre. There is much to be learned from studying how the final screenplay emerged from the work of three writers and their producer, and from the further changes made by the director, technical advisor, and film editor during production and post-production. Initial confusion of aims is resolved as the option of a clean and unencumbered line of action is chosen. This enables the writers to clear sub-plots out of the excessively long draft screenplay and encourages further honing down during shooting and editing.

  • James Baldwin As a Writer of Short Fiction: an Evaluation
JAMES BALDWIN AS A WRITER OF SHORT FICTION: AN EVALUATION dayton G. Holloway A Dissertation Submitted to the Graduate School of Bowling Green State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of DOCTOR OF PHILOSOPHY December 1975 618208 ii Abstract Well known as a brilliant essayist and gifted novelist, James Baldwin has received little critical attention as short story writer. This dissertation analyzes his short fiction, concentrating on character, theme and technique, with some attention to biographical parallels. The first three chapters establish a background for the analysis and criticism sections. Chapter 1 provides a biographi cal sketch and places each story in relation to Baldwin's novels, plays and essays. Chapter 2 summarizes the author's theory of fiction and presents his image of the creative writer. Chapter 3 surveys critical opinions to determine Baldwin's reputation as an artist. The survey concludes that the author is a superior essayist, but is uneven as a creator of imaginative literature. Critics, in general, have not judged Baldwin's fiction by his own aesthetic criteria. The next three chapters provide a close thematic analysis of Baldwin's short stories. Chapter 4 discusses "The Rockpile," "The Outing," "Roy's Wound," and "The Death of the Prophet," a Bi 1 dungsroman about the tension and ambivalence between a black minister-father and his sons. In contrast, Chapter 5 treats the theme of affection between white fathers and sons and their ambivalence toward social outcasts—the white homosexual and black demonstrator—in "The Man Child" and "Going to Meet the Man." Chapter 6 explores the theme of escape from the black community and the conseauences of estrangement and identity crises in "Previous Condition," "Sonny's Blues," "Come Out the Wilderness" and "This Morning, This Evening, So Soon." The last chapter attempts to apply Baldwin's aesthetic principles to his short fiction.

  • Raoul Walsh to Attend Opening of Retrospective Tribute at Museum
The Museum of Modern Art jl west 53 Street, New York, N.Y. 10019 Tel. 956-6100 Cable: Modernart NO. 34 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE RAOUL WALSH TO ATTEND OPENING OF RETROSPECTIVE TRIBUTE AT MUSEUM Raoul Walsh, 87-year-old film director whose career in motion pictures spanned more than five decades, will come to New York for the opening of a three-month retrospective of his films beginning Thursday, April 18, at The Museum of Modern Art. In a rare public appearance Mr. Walsh will attend the 8 pm screening of "Gentleman Jim," his 1942 film in which Errol Flynn portrays the boxing champion James J. Corbett. One of the giants of American filmdom, Walsh has worked in all genres — Westerns, gangster films, war pictures, adventure films, musicals — and with many of Hollywood's greatest stars — Victor McLaglen, Gloria Swanson, Douglas Fair banks, Mae West, James Cagney, Humphrey Bogart, Marlene Dietrich and Edward G. Robinson, to name just a few. It is ultimately as a director of action pictures that Walsh is best known and a growing body of critical opinion places him in the front rank with directors like Ford, Hawks, Curtiz and Wellman. Richard Schickel has called him "one of the best action directors...we've ever had" and British film critic Julian Fox has written: "Raoul Walsh, more than any other legendary figure from Hollywood's golden past, has truly lived up to the early cinema's reputation for 'action all the way'...." Walsh's penchant for action is not surprising considering he began his career more than 60 years ago as a stunt-rider in early "westerns" filmed in the New Jersey hills.

INSTITUTION Louisiana State Dept. of Education, Baton Rouge. REPORT NO Bull-1060 PUB DATE 71 NOTE 205p. EDRS PRICE MF-$0.65 HC-$9.87 DESCRIPTORS Activity Units; *American History; Civil War (United States); *Concept Teaching; constitutional History; Curriculum Guides; Democracy; *History Instruction; Modern History; Reconstruction Era; Secondary Grades; Sequential Learning; *Social Studies; *United States History ABSTRACT Providing a basic framework for a one year American history course for secondary students, this curriculum guide offers help for teachers in planning, organizing, and teaching social studies. Designed to cover the whole paLorama of history (1450 through 1969) in sequence, the course aims tc help students understand early events and how they are related to contemporary affairs. The multi-concept plan is based upon the assumption that the subject matter of American history can be presented in terms of general organizing concepts. These general ideas (primary concepts) serve as the organizational framework for factual content (secondary concepts) of the course. The students, taught by this plan, become aware of the relativity of historical interpretation and learn to organize facts into meaningful patterns. The thirty-six weekcourse in American history is divided into 17 units of instruction, with each unit varying from one to three weeks in duration. The last three units are devoted to the developing twentieth-century conflict between Capitalism and Communism. Concepts, content, guides, oral and written activities, and bibliography of student and teacher materials are presented for each unit.

  • Gospel Music and the Sonic Fictions of Black Womanhood in Twentieth-Century African American Literature
“UP ABOVE MY HEAD”: GOSPEL MUSIC AND THE SONIC FICTIONS OF BLACK WOMANHOOD IN TWENTIETH-CENTURY AFRICAN AMERICAN LITERATURE Kimberly Gibbs Burnett A dissertation submitted to the faculty at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in partial fulfillment of the degree requirements for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy in the Department of English and Comparative Literature in the Graduate School. Chapel Hill 2020 Approved by: Danielle Christmas Florence Dore GerShun Avilez Glenn Hinson Candace Epps-Robertson ©2020 Kimberly Gibbs Burnett ALL RIGHTS RESERVED ii ABSTRACT Kimberly Burnett: “Up Above My Head”: Gospel Music and the Sonic Fictions of Black Womanhood in TWentieth-Century African American Literature (Under the direction of Dr. Danielle Christmas) DraWing from DuBois’s Souls of Black Folk (1903), which highlighted the Negro spirituals as a means of documenting the existence of a soul for an African American community culturally reduced to their bodily functions, gospel music figures as a reminder of the narrative of black women’s struggle for humanity and of the literary markers of a black feminist ontology. As the attention to gospel music in texts about black women demonstrates, the material conditions of poverty and oppression did not exclude the existence of their spiritual value—of their claim to humanity that was not based on conduct or social decorum. At root, this project seeks to further the scholarship in sound and black feminist studies— applying concepts, such as saturation, break, and technology to the interpretation of black womanhood in the vernacular and cultural recordings of gospel in literature. Further, this dissertation seeks to offer neW historiography of black female development in tWentieth century literature—one which is shaped by a sounding culture that took place in choir stands, on radios in cramped kitchens, and on stages all across the nation.

  • Novelty and Canonicity in Lucian's Verae Historiae
Parody and Paradox: Novelty and Canonicity in Lucian’s Verae Historiae Katharine Krauss Barnard College Comparative Literature Class of 2016 Abstract: The Verae historiae is famous for its paradoxical claim both condemning Lucian’s literary predecessors for lying and also confessing to tell no truths itself. This paper attempts to tease out this contradictory parallel between Lucian’s own text and the texts of those he parodies even further, using a text’s ability to transmit truth as the grounds of comparison. Focusing on the Isle of the Blest and the whale episodes as moments of meta-literary importance, this paper finds that Lucian’s text parodies the poetic tradition for its limited ability to transmit truth, to express its distance from that tradition, and yet nevertheless to highlight its own limitations in its communication of truth. In so doing, Lucian reflects upon the relationship between novelty and adherence to tradition present in the rhetoric of the Second Sophistic. In the prologue of his Verae historiae, Lucian writes that his work, “τινα…θεωρίαν οὐκ ἄµουσον ἐπιδείξεται” (1.2).1 Lucian flags his work as one that will undertake the same project as the popular rhetorical epideixis since the Verae historiae also “ἐπιδείξεται.” Since, as Tim Whitmarsh writes, “sophistry often privileges new ideas” (205:36-7), Lucian’s contemporary audience would thus expect his text to entertain them at least in part through its novelty. Indeed, the Verae historiae fulfills these expectations by offering a new presentation of the Greek literary canon. In what follows I will first explore how Lucian’s parody of an epic katabasis in the Isle of the Blest episode criticizes the ability of the poetic tradition to transmit truth.
